Tether any computer (PC or Mac) to an iPhone with 3.0 OS in minutes (self.gadgets)
submitted 2 years ago by kcb2
[–]kcb2[S] 33 points34 points35 points 2 years ago*
Here's the easiest way to tether an iPhone with the latest OS to any computer. I have tested this on a Mac and PC and it works both ways. There are some known bugs, but it is easy to "uninstall" and can be done on-the-fly.
To "uninstall", go to Settings -> General -> Profile and select the "Remove" button.
All this can be done without iTunes or additional drivers installed. It can be added / removed as needed.
As with all the tethering options, be forewarned that AT&T (or other provider) hasn't approved this solution and use at your own risk.
[–]errer 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Works splendidly, thanks for pointing this out!
[–]kiwimonster 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Where/how do you input the MMS settings?
[–]flowithego 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
It seems this work around won't work for o2 pay&go customers, as 1) tethering is not available for pay&go customers at all 2) even for pay monthly customers, you have to sign up and pay extra.

Aren't Macs PCs too?
[–]rocksauce 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
yes
[–]phedre 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
Bite your tongue, you PC-ist.
[–]rocksauce 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I have been using macs since before they were power "pc"s, but really cant tell if you are joking or what not.
[–]phedre 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
could anyone really use the term "pc-ist" and NOT be joking?
In a time when there is an acronym assigned to "for the win" yes.
[–]klauskinski 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
WTF? FTW, FTW!
[–]monx 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
wow, that's fun!
[–]klauskinski 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
IT FEELS LIKE PLAYING THE PIANO!!!
I AM AN MUSICIAN!!!!
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 2 years ago*
I was brought up knowing that FTW stood for "Fuck The World" ... only recently did I discover that people now think it means "For The Win".
I used to think these guys were being all hardcore ... now I realise they sound like some badly translated Japanese video game.
[–]db2 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
They were still a "personal computer" though which is what "PC" means.
[–]wowlolcat 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Here I've been thinking it stood for "Programmable Calculator".
[–]db2 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
It can until you factor in (l)users, most of which couldn't program 2+2 without calc.exe existing already.
[–]coollettuce 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Yep, I'm currently running Leopard and Windows 7 on my self-built PC.
[–]wickedsteve 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
No room for Linux?
Well, I occasionally run BT4 in a VM for WiFi cracking.
[–]zdiggler 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Real Macs uses ADB din style connectors and some stupid monitor cables that not compatible with anything. Actually nothing compatible with anything that I can remember.
[–]wickedsteve 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
They used to be Power PCs.
[–]dawnerd 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I did something similar moments after upgrading. I knew the setting was in the carrier settings file, and from that it wasn't too hard to patch.
[–]Slipgrid 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Anyone know what this does to the phone? I could use it tomorrow, because I'm going camping in an area I could get a cell signal but no wifi.
[–]cranktheguy 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
If there is any time to turn off the computer, it is while camping. Log off, man, log off.
[–]MindStalker -1 points0 points1 point 2 years ago
I agree, logoff. Anyways the 3.0 software during install, installs a network profile. Meaning basic information about AT&T, this profile is basically a copy of profiles from places that do work and is based upon the 2.0 AT&T profile.
[–]jba 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Hm, not working from winXP. Tethering comes up - the apple interface is installed, and it appears i can ping the default gateway from the PC (which appears to be the iphone based on the sub-milisecond latency), but can't get anything beyond that.. Anyone else seeing the same thing?
[–]wolfzero 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I've heard this will break the Visual Voicemail feature.
[–]phlux 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Woot - my first post from a tethered iphone, yay.
But how does one get MMS to work?
[–]Dromerin 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
My phone isn't recognizing my macbook via bluetooth. What am I doing wrong?
[–]DJGibbon -1 points0 points1 point 2 years ago
Isn't it possible to do wireless tethering? I thought that was why everyone was so excited about 3.0!
Couldn't live without my G1 wireless tether . . .
[–]spaceghost0r 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
You can do it over Bluetooth apparently.
[–]spaceghost0r 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
And indeed I'm doing so now. I've only got an EDGE connections so it's slow as shit, but it does work.
[–]retromadder 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago*
for windows mobile only, for wifi hotspot use wmwifi router...
[–]poeir 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
How do you set up G1 wireless tethering?
[–]DJGibbon 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
You need root, which is easy enough to come by (the Android developers have said they made it easy to do because they knew people would want to do it). See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=519523 for more info than you'll ever need.
Once you have root, there are plenty of apps that will turn your phone into a wireless AP, so your wifi laptop can surf unconnected. Very happiness-inducing :) Try http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/ for one which which works for me.
[–]speaker219 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
You were also able to do it via an Ad-Hoc network if you jailbroke your phone.
[–]guiscard 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I use Joikuspot with my Nokia N82. Turns it into a wifi hotspot: http://www.joikushop.com/index.php?action=products&mode=productDetails&product_id=33
It will drain the battery if you use for an hour or so, but its fast enough to run TF2.
(I don't work for them, just love the program).
[–]G_Bananas -1 points0 points1 point 2 years ago
I've downloaded the new profile, enabled tethering, but nothing happens after I hook ip up to my PC via USB. Is there a driver I need, or do I need to change some setting on my PC?
[–]MindStalker 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago*
Yep, this worked, make sure you go into Settings -> General -> Network also and turn on tethering..
[–]kcb2[S] 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Thanks for reminding me of this step... I have tested this process a few times and the tethering option stays turned on after the initial setting, so I forgot all about it.
[–]hortont424 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago*
Heyy... I installed the profile, but don't have that option... any ideas?
EDIT: Nevermind, I'm in the same boat as TexasCanuck, so maybe it doesn't work on the first gen phone.
[–]star-d 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
Works great on 2nd generation iPhones, but it doesn't work at all on the 1st generation model.
[–]rensfriend 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
this was drop dead easy...hopefully AT&T won't pick up on the data usage...thing is, i thought iPhone's are sold with unlimited data packages (at least mine was) so does that render the download/usage discussion moot?
[–]TexasCanuck 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
Didn't work for me :( Installed the profile, rebooted the phone, and nothing in Settings -> General -> Network :(
Running the 1st gen EDGE iPhone on AT&T.
[–]Imperial476 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Can't cite the source, but in my searching today I read that it will not work for the 1st gen iphone.
[–]Javbw -1 points0 points1 point 2 years ago
Doesn't seem to work on mine at all.
I Downloaded the file and it is in place, but doesn't seem to enable it.
[–]FlimtotheFlam 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Word to the Wise, Don't get caught. AT&T might out of no where tag you with a huge bill for tethering. Tethering is popular on the Sprint network and I have heard some bad stories over the years. If it was me I would wait a month till I try this out and see if you hear anyone getting giant bills for tethering.
[–]hillgod 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Can they actually prove you're tethering? I'd be curious if they have anything regarding tethering in the service contract. If not, I'm not sure how they could legally get away with charging you more. Of course, intimidation and the desire to avoid litigation would probably get most people (assuming it's not legal).
[–]metachor 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Perhaps as a precaution, it is prudent to monitor your data use throughout the month. If it approaches 400MB, better stop tethering until the next cycle.
This is all hypothetical of course.
[–]mattindustries 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago*
Last year I was using my iphone to stream hulu while I was on a bike tour. Not sure how much data I really used, but I am assuming each show was around 200mb in the not 480p quality.
yeah, how were you watching hulu? hulu req. flash and flash and the iphone are incompatible...
This thread is about tethering... and I was tethering with my laptop.
[–]salz12 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
How were you watching hulu?
[–]AlLnAtuRalX 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Anybody try any of these on Linux? I'm curious.
[–]I922sParkCir 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I tried it on a fresh Ubuntu 9.04 install; nothing happened. 7 and Leopard work like a flawlessly though.
[–]bdelgado 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
So I got a string connecting my Mac and my iPhone. Now what? Is it tethered?
[–]isevenx 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
thank you!!! now i can live blog!
[–]emresaglam 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
OMG! This is awesome feature. I bet no phone ever did that.... Oh wait...
[–]nibblonian 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
OMG! I bet people were trying to say this was a feature unique to iPhones! Oh, wait ...
[–]tallwookie 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I demand jailbreak. now!
[–]itsmeee 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
ultrasn0w. 6/19/09
[–]suidog 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago*
Looks like it works for my Vista machine, Testing on my Windows 7 RC1 machine. So far it doesn't see the network adapter on Windows 7 but I don't have iTunes installed. I'm going to install it and see if that makes a difference.
Edit: ok after installing iTunes 8.2 on WIn7 I was able to get it to see the apple network device but it always showed the network cable was disconnected.
[–]MindStalker 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Make sure you turn on tethering on the iphone under settings -> general -> network
[–]asaturn 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
can this be done on other 3g data phones?
[–]calantorntain 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I don't have an iPhone.
What is the point of tethering?
[–]kcb2[S] 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago*
Use the data connection of your phone on your laptop - have an internet connection anywhere. Tethering isn't specific to iPhone - many regular phones can tether (and have been able to for years) as well as Blackberry's and other smartphones.
Ah, cool. For some reason I had not heard that term before. I thought perhaps it had something to do with some sort of security thing.
[–]voxel -4 points-3 points-2 points 2 years ago
Why would something like this story get so many down-votes? Because it's not AT&T authorized?
[–]ynohoo 13 points14 points15 points 2 years ago
The item would probably have found a friendlier home in the Apple subreddit. By posting it in gadgets, it ran into the anti-Jobs and pro-open-standards crowd.
Apple stopped being the funky underdog a while back.
[–]kcb2[S] 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Yeah...I debated - I chose gadgets since it wasn't Apple specific, which other iphone-tether posts have been.
Oh well..you're damned if you do, damned if you don't.
[–]tenninjakittens 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Not that I care either way, but... how is any iPhone tethering post not Apple-specific?
If I tether an iPhone to my Thinkpad, it isn't about Apple, its about tethering my phone.
iPhone isn't just an Apple product, it is also a smartphone which I would casually describe as a "gadget".
It certainly is a gadget, which makes it belong here. It's also Apple-specific (since they made it, and thus "thought different"), so it belongs in self.apple. Honestly sometimes I wish subreddits acted more like tags...
[–]celticninja 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
The iPhone subreddit could have done with a copy.
[–]giveitago -4 points-3 points-2 points 2 years ago
Don't like no flash on iphone but seems as if in this regard they're pushing innovation from the flash folks.
[–]cyberwiz01 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Also data sent via tethering shows up differently on the AT&T usage page so I would be careful. It's probably very easy to track and charge for this.
I can slightly confirm this. All data before I did the 3.0 upgrade showed up as sent/from wap.cingular Now it shows up as phone. When I use the tethering it shows up as wap.cingular again.
[–]boxofjack 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
For those that do run afoul of AT&T and get a nasty surprise on their next bill, you could try calling them and asking/begging for some sort of clemency.
I recently went overseas and stupidly had my "Data Roaming" setting switched to ON. I ran up $50 worth of charges but one call to support got this stricken from my bill. They also warned me that they were only going to do this once.
[–]voxel 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Site your source for this statement please.
[–]cyberwiz01 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
http://wireless.att.com Login and check the usage stats.
[–]TheColonel -1 points0 points1 point 2 years ago
I tried this and found no evidence of such a thing. Of course, I only used it about 20 minutes before I checked... how long does it take for such a thing to show up?
[–]Webframp -4 points-3 points-2 points 2 years ago
I don't buy that for a second. Where's the evidence to support your statement?
[–]cyberwiz01 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
Go to wireless.att.com and check the usage yourself. It shows up differently, as MindStalker confirmed.
[–]Webframp 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Interesting, then I make a retraction. I do buy that for a second. So is it an OS 3.0 only change? And how is tethered data usage reported for a non-iPhone user?
[–]stacecom 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Some people vote down anything iPhone related.
[–]zdiggler -2 points-1 points0 points 2 years ago
I been tethering my LG VX8100 for 3 years on EVDO.
the best part is I DON'T HAVE TO PAY A DIME FOR DATA!!!
[–]db2 -5 points-4 points-3 points 2 years ago
Personal Computer or Macintosh?
Seriously this has got to be stopped. "PC" means "personal computer" and covers every kind of computer anyone is likely to have in their home, unless they've got a PDP-11 in their basement. And even then technically it's for personal use so it's a PC de facto.
all it takes is a username and password
create account
is it really that easy? only one way to find out...
already have an account and just want to login?
