How do I tell if a diamond is real? (self.explainlikeimfive)
submitted 4 months ago by ultimatefrisbee
I found a diamond earring while on the bus, but I can't find the owner. Is there some simpe test I can conduct to tell if it is real?
[–]some_cool_guy 16 points17 points18 points 4 months ago
Diamond is the hardest mineral on earth, as most of us know. It has a 10 on the mohs hardness scale, which is 40x as hard as a 9 (corundum [ruby, etc]). Test the diamond by giving it scratch tests, if it's scratched at all, it's not a diamond.
[–]guitarman90 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
This is the easiest and simplest way to check. You'll have your answer.
[–]tarheelsam 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Almost!
[–]cesiumtea 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Amend it to hardest "common" material, perhaps? It's certainly the hardest thing I'll ever come into contact with. (Dick jokes aside)
[–]aston_za 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Dick jokes are easy though. :P
[–]ok_you_win 32 points33 points34 points 4 months ago
Hold it in a flame. If it burns to nothing, it was a diamond. :P
[–]GoogleDatShit 36 points37 points38 points 4 months ago
Some weird language showed up on it, is that normal?
[–]Networkian 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
One stone to rule them all, one stone to find them, one stone to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
[–]nallar 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
I always sing that in my head to the tune of "I saw three ships go sailing by", and I've no idea why. :(
[–]physics4life 117 points118 points119 points 4 months ago
Xray it. It shouldn't show up because they are radiolucent. If you aren't scheduled for an xray, try jumping off something high. Remember to stow the diamond somewhere first, near the breakage. I suggest your left arm, as it's easy to break and not that useful (in comparison to other bones, e.g. neck, spine etc).
If that's not OK (you don't live near a hospital for instance), then you can try to measure the refractive index of the stone. It's high, much higher than that of glass or cubic zirconia. To test this, draw a small dot with a pen on a piece of white paper. Place your diamond over the center of the dot. Look directly down on it and if your stone is not a diamond, you will see a circular reflection in the stone. This relies on the diamond not being mounted, and being large enough to see through accurately.
If you have just returned from hospital and didn't read the second one before your broke your arm, I apologise.
[–]bobleplask 13 points14 points15 points 4 months ago
So I can make a gun out of diamond and bring it with me on the airplane?
[–]Tsopperi 44 points45 points46 points 4 months ago
2012: TSA bans all jewelery from airplanes because of potential terrorism, racism, Hitler, and the illuminati.
Are you happy now? ARE YOU?!
[–]bobleplask 6 points7 points8 points 4 months ago
Well, kinda. I mean I don't want to die..!
[–]TheNr24 12 points13 points14 points 4 months ago
..!
what emotion does that convey?
[–]Fiennes 11 points12 points13 points 4 months ago
The "Eureka" moment after a brief pause. The opposite of waking up with a blood relative, which is ".. o".
[–]Leel17 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Spot on, sir.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
Bobleplask is a robot. He has no emotion.

Hey!
[–]bobleplask 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
What Fiennes said.
[–]chefranden 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
Only if you have diamond bullets.
the gunpowder is the tricky part.
[–]bobleplask 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
ELI5: How can I make gunpowder from diamonds and diamond bullets?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
smash diamonds with a hammer, then add acid. Any kind of acid, doesn't matter.
[–]PraiseBuddha 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Well if you've had acid this whole time, why not use that?
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Not MY precious acid!!!
[–]physics4life 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
That would also work.
[–]ffreak3 -5 points-4 points-3 points 4 months ago

Why would this work? Are you imagining because diamond is high on the hardness scale? Because then I'm afraid you're misunderstanding the hardness scale; Diamond is still a crystal, and if you whack a diamond with a hammer, it will still turn to dust. Diamond is brittle. However, diamond can scratch a quartz plate.
[–]DogRavioli 15 points16 points17 points 4 months ago
.....whoosh
[–]ffreak3 14 points15 points16 points 4 months ago
Oh, geez, finding a way to be scheduled for an x-ray.
In my defence, I work nights, so I just got up.
[–]teqland 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
The resulting fall would require an Xray..
[–]veritablequandary 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
If OP breaks his arm & the suspected diamond is attached to the arm s/he broke, it would conceivably be included in the x-ray taken of the broken arm, thus allowing OP to determine (upon viewing the x-ray) whether the suspected diamond is real or not.
[–]physics4life 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
No no, just so that it shows up on the xray.
[–]mz27 37 points38 points39 points 4 months ago
Go to a jeweler and ask! I learned everything I know about shiny rocks by sitting at a counter and yakking with the jeweler about cuts and grades and inclusions and colors and such while my ex fawned over rocks. It'll take you only a few minutes of your time to learn how to spot a diamond substitute. A counterfeit designed to pass is much harder.
Jewelers are often surprisingly chill about letting strangers handle and pour over thousands of dollars of their shinies with a jewelers loop. Which I guess is unsurprising if you consider that many of them are shiny-rock nerds.
[–]somehacker 11 points12 points13 points 4 months ago
I can testify to this. I was a major rock nerd when I was like 9, and I'd always bug the jewelers to show me all their things. If you wanna learn, best place to go is a rock or mineral shop that is also a jewelery shop. They will usually have back rooms with nifty stuff that they love to show off.

icwutudidthere
[–]randomredhead 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
Yes! I was super into gemstones and all that when I was younger so my mom took me to a jewelers one day. He took us to the back and let me hold a bunch of uncut diamonds.
[–]mz27 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
I concur that that is the best place, but if you don't happen to be near a gem and mineral show or have a rock shop nearby you can get a fair bit of information at most any mall jeweler and they are more common.
[–]DivineAna 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
You can just hand it over to most of them and ask what they think of it. Even if it is a diamond, it may be extremely low quality and not really worth anything (I learned this when trying to sell off old jewelry from an ex.)
[–]saadistic1 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Inclusions or occlusions?
[–]Fambida 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Inclusions
Thank you for clearing that up. I must admit that I went to different jewelers and talked about occlusions as opposed to inclusions. I must have sounded pretty silly.
[–]jersully 13 points14 points15 points 4 months ago*
If it gets you oral it was diamond enough.
[–]Boldprussian 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Try eating it. You can't eat things that aren't real. Plus, your stomach acids will shine it right up!
[–]owmyfreakinears 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
It'll make yo dookie twinkle!
[–]PraiseBuddha 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Then you can eat recently extinct dinosaur babies, thus making them extinct again.
[–]xiporah 7 points8 points9 points 4 months ago
There is a machine that can test it for you. Most Jewelers will have one.
[–]GreenStrong 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
I cut gems, dabble in gemology, this is the correct answer. The machine works by measuring thermal conductance, diamond conducts heat faster than any other transparent solid.
Other gemological instruments would each rule out one stone, it would take a battery of tests to determine a conclusive result. For example, a dichroscope would tell if a material was doubly refractive, which would eliminate moissanite, but not CZ.
[–]geckospots 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
diamond conducts heat faster than any other transparent solid
TIL! Neat!
[–]GreenStrong 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Moissanite was developed by Cree research as a heat conductor for LEDs. It is physically and chemically analogous to diamond. Opaque silicon carbide has been around for decades.
[–]geckospots 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Interesting - for someone who used to work in jewellery retail I know surprisingly little about moissanite and its development (other than it's super sparkly and difficult to distinguish from the 'real thing').
[–]holysnapson 10 points11 points12 points 4 months ago
Wait forever. If the stone is still there, it's a diamond.
[–]IrishSchmirish 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
The logic... Flawless..
[–]shadowdude777 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Diamond very slowly turns into graphite, a more stable allotrope. So actually, if you wait forever and end up with a lump of coal, you used to have a diamond.
[–]Cajoled 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Unless you burn it. Diamonds aren't forever.
[–]EmpRupus 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Fair answer - Diamond is the hardest and one of the most stable / unreactive substances known. So, there isn't a simple test. Go to a jewellers.
[–]DogRavioli 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
$70 for a tester of your own isn't simple? http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004FSHEBQ/ref=redir_mdp_mobile
[–]mz27 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Diamlond is less hard than aggregated nanorod, some ceramics, and some materials formed naturally in meteor strikes. It is less chemically stable than teflon, less thermally and chemically stable than corundum (sapphire, ruby). Brittle, etc.
[–]MadLibz 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Use UV light to look for flaws. ALL diamonds have flaws. If it doesn't have any flaws it is fake.
But still, you should really go to a jeweler. If the first one says it is fake go to another. Those guys are shady sometimes...
[–]sketchthestars 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
If you go to a jewelry store a gemologist can tell you if it's a diamond usually just by looking. My dad owns a jewelry store and he's GIA certified, and he tends to be able to do this. He also looks with a loupe and usually if there aren't any flaws (carbon) it's a cubic zirconia (fake). He also uses a diamond-scratcher (it looks like a stylus) made out of corundum, which has a hardness of 9, so it will scratch a CZ but glide over the surface of a diamond. If you get one and feel any bite when you test, it's a CZ.
The simplest test, but I've found it only really works on larger stones, is to breathe on the stone. If it fogs up with your breath, it's not a diamond.
[–]sfriniks 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Does a cubic zirconia fog up when you breathe on it?
[–]GreenStrong 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
It depends on the humidity, anything can fog up. Diamond fogs up more because it conducts heat quickly, and it will look different because it is extremely hydrophobic. On a diamond, the condensation droplets will be nearly spherical, like water on a freshly waxed car.
I'm not sure how hydrophobic moisannite is, it is chemically analogous to diamond. But silicon carbide (industrial moisannite) is sometimes mixed with water to make abrasive slurry, diamond is mixed with oil or the grit particles repel water and clump together.
[–]sketchthestars 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
yep, it should... only problem is it can be a bit hard to see on smaller stones
[–]luke_c 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Nice try, diamond thief.
[–]JoshuaQuail 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
immerse it in corn syrup. if it is glass or cubic zirconia, it will cease to sparkle. if it is a diamond, it will still shine.
[–]godzilla8nj 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago*
I'm curious if this is true, since it is the most reasonable at-home test offered. Can you explain why the diamond would react differently?
Edit: Answered my own question. It does work. Dispersion.
[–]RoarYo 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Bite it.
[–]00derper 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
If it's best friend it's a girl, then it's real.
[–]ImStillAwesome 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Kind of hard to explain, but a real diamond throws off a lot of light. If it's in a brightly lit room and reflecting a lot of light, it's either real or a very good fake.
Cubic zirconium has a higher refractive index, and therefore is spottable by being TOO shiny and colorful.
[–]ifoughtpiranhas 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
I'm pretty sure if you try to scratch a window with it and it works, it's a diamond.
[–]Thurid 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Am I the only one to ask you to try to find the owner? Call the Police and the bus company. Make sure the people coming to claim it have the match.
[–]gemshonor 0 points1 point2 points 1 month ago
Hardest substance, yes it is. But don't try with the hardness test, it is one of the destructive test. It is better to ask the gemologist, who can identify gemstones(if they have instruments). Hardness is the property measuring by use a material scratching. Toughness is the property for how well a material resist for breaking.
[–]berryhill 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Just like you test for gold, bite it. Chew it, and if all your teeth breaks, it's definitely diamond.
[–]pseudonameous -1 points0 points1 point 4 months ago
HIT IT WITH A SLEDGEHAMMER!
[–]anitsirk 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
a simple method...
The fog technique is an accurate and easy test to perform. To check the stone, simply breathe on it. The reason this is so reliable is that a real diamond is not capable of holding heat. Therefore, after breathing on the stone if it becomes fogged over, it is a cubic zirconia whereas if the warm breath clears up immediately, the stone is an actual diamond.
[–]geft -1 points0 points1 point 4 months ago
I think it's rather pointless since you can artificially create synthetic diamonds in the lab and they can be of higher grades and have better shines than natural diamonds. Its only flaw is perfection. Natural diamonds are actually slightly dull with yellowish tint due to impurities.
[–]General_Mayhem 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago
I think the question is diamond vs. glass/quartz/other cheap substitutes rather than synthetic vs. delicious tears of child slaves. Synthetic diamonds are still diamonds.
[–]GoogleDatShit 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
Nothing says "I love you" more than shiny rocks mined through African children slave labor.
The line you are failing at stealing is "Nothing says I love you like a superficial and overvalued rock clawed from the guts of the earth by african slave labor"
[–]GoogleDatShit 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Didn't know about this but thanks I guess?
[–]ffreak3 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Size. You can't create synthetic diamonds of any size; AFAIK, you'd be hard pressed to find synthetic 1 carats.
[–]ergotamine[] 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
I work in jewelry/ am a certified diamontologist by the Diamond Council of America. Artificial diamonds have been made in 1ct and up for a while, one of our venus probes had a 1" (If I'm remembering correctly) thick diamond window on it to withstand the pressure of the atmosphere. The issue with lab-created stones in jewelry is just that the process to make them takes so much energy and special equipment (not to mention security for the labs) that they're still more expensive to make than to dig out of the ground.
I give it 5-10 years before you start seeing serious market influx of synthetic diamonds in jewelry.
[–]IrishSchmirish 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Aaahhh refreshing. Every one of these posts has a "gem" of an answer. This is that gem. I love learning new stuff like this!
[–]aston_za 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
They are still diamonds though, as opposed to something else. The question was just about diamonds in general, not "is it a natural diamond?".
[–]geft 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Both are 'real' diamonds, no matter their impurities. Diamond is categorized due to its atomic structure, so I'm assuming OP was asking about natural diamonds.
Yeah, but this is the same as my point. I understood OP as asking if he had a diamond or something else (quartz, cubic zirconia, glass, piece of bubblegum), rather than a natural diamond or a synthetic diamond.
I think a synthetic gem is unlikely in jewellery anyway....
[–]Robbieworld -3 points-2 points-1 points 4 months ago
A simple but not completely reliable test is to fog it up with your breath, a real diamond will not fog but glass and other material will.
[–]CinqDiamants 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago
Hmmmm, why? The fog is just condensed water from your breath which should appear on anything cool enough.
[–]chefranden 24 points25 points26 points 4 months ago
Because diamonds burn with an inner fire of romance.
[–]perb123 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
I thought it was the burning rage from the slave that dug it up that made it warm.
[–]chefranden 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Yes, but de Beers has this patented conversion process.
[–]Robbieworld 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago
Diamonds are unique in being able to dispense heat imediately, therfore they don't fog up! So if you breath on it and it fogs it's most likely a fake.
[–]tnethacker -12 points-11 points-10 points 4 months ago

[–]Justarug -5 points-4 points-3 points 4 months ago

[–]zgeiger 4 points5 points6 points 4 months ago
Plenty of other minerals can scratch glass, could just be quartz for instance.
[–]Teotwawki69 -20 points-19 points-18 points 4 months ago*
If you found it on the bus, it's probably not a diamond.
Also, the value of diamonds was artificially created by these people because, surprise, they were in the diamond business. They even went so far as to bribe a Hollywood studio to add a famous song about diamonds to this film in order to make women covet them.
Edit: "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend" first appeared in the Broadway musical before the film, but it still wound up there because of the De Beers's family lobbying for it.
