There is a wide spectrum of ways to perform electronic music. At one end is "press 'play' and jump around." At the other end, there's "play your instruments like any other musician." I'd say most electronic acts fall somewhere in the middle.

Here are a number of options (with some overlap):

There are a lot of options.

Also, Maschine + Maschine Mikro + Jeremy Ellis = Awesome

Ah! I had forgotten to link that one! Definitely one of my favorites.

Thanks for the comprehensive answer. Very informative. Thanks for all the effort!

No problem! It was fun (and time consuming.)

I personally hold this Ceephax performance up as the (truly) live EDM benchmark.

[–]mafgar 1 point2 points ago

oh come on, this is pretty lame. I love ceephax, but the benchmark??

Depends on the artist. Sometimes he just ooks cool. Presses meaningless buttons.

[–]killacosby 3 points4 points ago

That's what I do.

2 of my best friends are DJs, and 95% of their job is this. Sometimes I am backup DJ, and my job is to look cool while they are going to get a drink or whatever while a long song is running. Yeah.

[–]theriverman 3 points4 points ago

Uhh why don't you go get them a drink instead?

[–]kazagistar 5 points6 points ago

"or whatever" is the key word here. Bathroom, talk to some hot girl, etc.

Well if you're Steve Aoki you do everything but DJ, like ride in rafts, spit champagne into peoples faces or just climb on shit. Guys got it figured out.

[–]killermicrobe 0 points1 point ago

now hes even throwing cakes in peoples faces and has like this inflatable boat so he can crowd surf while his set magically mixes itself in the background

When I saw him live he was actually mixing stuff live. And jumping on stage. But apparently now he does crazy antics.

I don't care if he's mixing or not, that guy is putting a show for the crowd.

There's basically three things you can do:

Play the music with live instruments. Trigger stems and loops. Beatmatch whole tracks together.

You can of course combine different techniques- look at the guys who record something to a loop and construct their music on-the-fly.

[–]Quady 9 points10 points ago

For example...

Soulwax plays their music live as a rock band, with drums, guitar, bass, vocals, keyboard synths, and a sampler (well, they use Ableton Live as sampler)

Daft Punk uses Ableton Live and Lemurpads to trigger stems and loops and effects.

Many artists beatmatch whole tracks together and basically just DJ their own music.

There are as many ways to play live as there are artists out there.

Another view from Daft Punks pyramid

Yeah I have asked that same question but it seems that it depends. This is most likely because there are endless, it seems, ways to create and control music on these programs. However I am no expert, I have been working with ableton for about a year now. I like to launch different clips and scenes creating all the melodies and rhythms in advance. I like to think of it as more like conducting than anything else.

Press play. Light cigarette. Wrangle non functioning knobs.

Skrilly style

EDIT: Bee-ing attacked.
