I don't consider this to be a problem. I think it refers to layers that are intended to be fertile already, like soil, sand and clay. I expect that you still need to irrigate stone layers, though.

Wait, you can farm on stone layers?

O.o

Yes! All you need to get things working is a bit of water to muddy the ground. I have a penchant for mining out an enormous room deep in the stony heart of a mountain, and terraforming myself a nifty tree farm (standard farm plots fit here nicely as well, of course).

omg, I am so building mighty underground farms deep beneath the earth's crust. Screw this top two levels bullshit!

You just have to get some mud, is all.

Muddy the earth with some water and you're good to go for your fortress.

Awww. I rather liked needing to set up mechanics early on.

Why is this being downvoted? This is USEFUL INFORMATION TO HAVE CONFIRMED HOLY SHIT REDDIT

Yeah, it brought back some of the mad scramble to survive early on that made the 2D versions so hectic. That could be good or bad, and for newbies it's probably bad, but I enjoyed it.

It cost me my first running fortress. Sealed the connection to a lake only with a door. When a titan showed up I thought I'm save behind walls and a drawbridge. Whelp, the titan went for a swim and knocked down the door. FUN happened. :)

I had the same thing happen with a gobbo siege. The Ogres (or was it trolls?) they brought with them laughed at my puny floodgate covering the farms irrigation.

Figured this out when I went through my first fort :)

I was also under the impression it was intended. I can confirm that no mud is needed for underground farming on sand at least.

I didn't like it because it basically forced you to only embark on locations with either streams or several ponds where it regularly rained.

I always just started digging to the caverns immediately after arrival.

Honestly, I didn't find the irrigation thing that hard. The first time I played DF I had to irrigate, and it went pretty well.

[–]griminald 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

And not only did it go well for me, but it encouraged me to find other ways to engineer things in DF, which seemed to be a big part of the game in general.

[–]reverendfrag4 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, it's an easy engineering success right at the beginning.

Of course, it was only "easy" because I watched captnduck's tutorials, but if you don't do your homework before trying to play DF for the first time then you're not gonna get very far.

I remember that it was stated to be a bug when .31 was first released. Especially useful, since now it's possible to have no alcohol available on embark.

All you need on embark is 2 copper nuggets and and an anvil. AND NOTHING ELSE.

What are you, some kind of elf?

[–]Fuco1337 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Anvil and one bar of something is enough. You can make a wooden axe to chop trees, and then make a pick.

[–]rainWisher 8 points9 points ago

common mistake: you need a fireproof metal/stone to build the furnace/forge :)

[–]cthulhu_zuul 2 points3 points ago

Super dwarf challenge: embark with nothing.

Disassemble your wagon, make a carpenter, make an axe.

STRIKE THE EARTH...after a few seasons...

NOTE: I haven't done this yet, so it's possible I'm talking out my ass.

I believe they call that game mode "minecraft"

Picks can only be made from metal, so if you're planning on doing any digging before the caravan comes you need at least an anvil, ore, and fireproof building material.

[–]cthulhu_zuul 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Right, that's what the "after a few seasons" meant. I was a little vague on that, my bad.

I'm saying build above-ground and try to survive until the first caravan comes and see if you can trade for it. Doing it would probably be more frustrating than challenging.

I've done it, it is pretty lame.

Ash counts as a fireproof building material IIRC.

[–]Malgas 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

But ash is produced at a wood furnace, which requires fireproof building material...

You might be able to produce bricks on-site in the new version if the top soil layer happens to be clay, though. I haven't tested this, but the wiki seems to indicate that kilns can be built of wood. If so, it's probably a bug.

EDIT: Kilns do, in fact, require fireproof building material.

Hey, my last fortress embarked without alcohol (I thought I had too many points... turns out I forgot the booze), and it turned out fine :) It was a hectic first year, but plant gathering and above-ground stills got me through it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is my fortress. I eliminated all caverns from the world, which resulted in all underground plants being extinct. I think I embarked with 5 donkeys, 300 cow meats, 3 picks, and 3 axes.

[–]Shattershift 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Man, I liked that. It made farming a little more valuable by making it a little harder. I still think above-ground farming should have some benefit, seeing as it's riskier.

A bug was fixed?!?

Ugly tricks no longer needed to do something as basic as farming ?!?

Impossible!!!

Wait...i dont need to work out irrigation when i embark anymore?!

Fuck, this ruined my last few forts.

[–]rro99 1 point2 points ago

I'll still be building irrigation systems. It's what dwarves would do.

I'm sad to see it go, but at the same time it means less dealing with waterworks. My waterworks are already complicated enough, what with the cleaning areas, the waterfalls, and the noble-drowning rooms.

Excellent. Of course, food is waaaay to easy to come by now. Supposedly, this is going to changed during the current arc. I forget where I read it, but I believe crops are going to become seasonal, so you can only harvest once per season. Here are the changes to farming listed in the development list:

Farming Improvements

* Soil moisture tracking and ability to moisten soil (buckets or other irrigation)
* Soil nutrient requirements for plants and nutrient tracking to the extent the farming interface can provide decent feedback for you, fertilizers can reflect this
* Harvestable flowers and fruit growing on plants, ability to plant trees
* Weeds
* More pests

So chances are, once moistening soil is in, you will have to irrigate again if you are growing crops inside. Farming will become a full time job.

You mean.. the forever reviled potash makers will become valued and respected members of the fortress community?! Madness..

Provided we can use barrels of elf blood to fertilise the fields I might be persuaded to accept this perversion.

why the hell would anyone WANT to have to deal with weeds in a game? they suck enough in real life.

FYI, I always found buckets and temporary pits to be the best irrigation "mechanism".

Real Dwarves use a complex series of floodgates, levers and pressure plates to irrigate their crops.
