I have really high hopes for him because I remember how I felt when Eccleston regenerated: "Who the hell is this guy? I've heard good things, but I don't see how he could top the 9th Doctor."

Smith looks like he could be really great if given the chance.

...but David Tennant was like family.

Also, "Geronimo!" is a lame catchphrase.

not_nathan 10 points11 points 6 months ago[-]

Hear, hear. I hope it dies off quickly. I have a feeling the BBC really wanted a new 'Allons-y'.

darkempath 11 points12 points 6 months ago[-]

R-r-r-r-r-r-r-r-ight!

Nah, every Doctor has something. Sylvester McCoy r-r-r-r-rolled his Rs, Eccleston had "Fantastic!", Jon Pertwee had Betsy, Tom Baker had jelly babies, and given enough time, Matt Smith will find his character.

sylvan 3 points4 points 6 months ago[-]

Jelly baby?

ddrt 1 point2 points 6 months ago[-]

Jelly babies are a popular gummy snack enjoyed by a certain version of the Master and Tom Baker, I think there was one other doctor who liked them. They happen throughout the early seasons. Come on, just started watching Dr. Who this year and I know what the hell a jelly baby is and its importance!

sylvan 4 points5 points 6 months ago[-]

I know what they are. I was offering him one.

Jelly baby?

ddrt 2 points3 points 6 months ago[-]

I'd love one!

sylvan 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

ddrt 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

David had allon zey

InfinitelyThirsting 5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]

Allons-y. It's French.

sumdumusername 18 points19 points 6 months ago[-]

I hadn't realized the size of the emotional investment I had in the episode until my little heart leapt and I said 'oh!' out loud and I kind of laughed and said inside 'it's him! it's the doctor! oh, he's back! it's the doctor!' and blew my nose and wiped my eyes.

thank god i was alone.

And thank god there's a DRWHO subreddit, or I'd never have a place to confess.

c-cal [S] 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

Wow, I personally couldn't leave the show. I thought the ending was very sad, when he goes to meet all his past friends... I had to listen to it 3-4 times to understand everything, I was slow. Martha is married to Mickey? I thought Martha had married the doctor from the third season...

[deleted] 4 points5 points 6 months ago* [-]

All that's ever said is she is engaged to Tom (Poison Sky) and that has had her honeymoon (Torchwood appearance). It isn't actually said that she married Tom though.

sumdumusername 1 point2 points 6 months ago* [-]

I know, right?

EDIT:

I haven't seen all the shows, not even the ones from this millennium. I'm relatively new to Who.

I'd only seen 'The Pirate Planet' because it was written by Douglas Adams and he's a funny muthafuckah but also dead so finding new stuff by him was getting hard. My friend from Wales told me about it and I knew it must be somewhere online because, well, EVERYTHING is online.

Then I discovered bittorrent and there was a HUGE (by dialup standards) torrent called 'fourth doctor' - that was where I learned I could download one episode of a series at a time - and I swear the first episodes I got had a Big Bad that was made of bubble-wrap spray-painted with green - and Tom Baker became the man I saw nearly every night just before going to sleep.

Look. I could have done worse.

Well, it was a serendipity kind of thing because then I learned there were new shows. New as in this century.

And the first episode I saw was 'The Empty Child.'

So it's Tom Baker and Tennant and Eccleston for me.

So far.

I bet though, I just BET that there are people in this subreddit who can tell me the best, or at least most representative, episodes of each of the other Doctors.

Because frankly, it took me nearly two years to download the Baker shows and I really don't think I have it in me to watch all the others.

Second edit: speeling

thornist 1 point2 points 6 months ago[-]

I won't claim that these are necessarily all either the best or the most representative, but they're my picks for stories you should probably watch (lots of Doctors' first/last stories in there):

William Hartnell: An Unearthly Child (c'mon, where it all started - how could you not!) and The Daleks

Patrick Troughton: The Tomb of the Cybermen, The War Games

Jon Pertwee: Spearhead from Space, Inferno, Planet of the Spiders

Peter Davison: Castrovalva, Earthshock, Caves of Androzani

Colin Baker: Revelation of the Daleks, The Ultimate Foe

Sylvester McCoy: Remebrance of the Daleks, The Curse of Fenric

Paul McGann: not much choice really!

A couple of those might be contentious, and I may have missed a couple others regard as essential viewing, but that's inevitable.

lazerdave 1 point2 points 6 months ago[-]

I'd have to add "Ambassadors.....of DEATH" from Pertwee.

Tom Baker era recommendations: "The Brain of Morbius," "The Ark In Space," "The Leisure Hive"(controversial choice, I know), and - of course - "Logopolis"

soundacious 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

Also from Colin Baker, it's worth getting Vengeance on Varos.

dsnmi 13 points14 points 6 months ago[-]

It's going to take some getting used to. Not because I'm so stuck on Tennant but because I spent the DT years saying "I hope he regenerates into someone older so he can be more Mad Professor and less action hero." Matt Smith just looks like a teenager to me and the trailer for season five seems to have him in full James Bond mode.

chaosrabbit 5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]

He looks like he should be hanging out with Sarah Jane's Luke.

lazerdave -1 points0 points 6 months ago[-]

God, that's hot!

lazerdave -1 points0 points 6 months ago[-]

Errrr, Rassilon, that's hot!!!!

Charlie24601 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

"legs...yes yes...arm, good...eyes...nose.......eh I've had worse."

That one nose comment sold him to me.

Dr_Who 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

True, baker, pertwee... even the first doctor all had very odd noses haha, his really isn't that odd

[deleted] 5 points6 points 6 months ago[-]

Am I the only one who thought all those actors who shook their heads back and forth so fast were awesome?

darwinosx 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

He was spectacular. The Doctor that is. Splendid chap. All of them.

KazamaSmokers 4 points5 points 6 months ago[-]

Thank you Brigadier.

xcalibre 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

Good show

Ronin_301 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

I thought he was pretty fantastic, actually.

I'm not too sure about the "Geronimo" catchphrase though. It might be good as long as it's not overused.

Thinking back on a couple of Steven Moffat's episodes (The Empty Child / The Doctor Dances and The Girl In The Fireplace), I recall him writing the Doctor with a certain fondness for bananas.

Either way, Matt Smith isn't David Tennant, and I think that's what makes Doctor Who so appealing. Despite the length of the series, each new Doctor is different enough from the last to make the character and show stay fresh.

dsnmi 6 points7 points 6 months ago[-]

Bananas are good.

Zirvo 4 points5 points 6 months ago[-]

I have great hopes that Moffat and Smith will do amazing things. However. I hate the bowtie. Alot.

sanoske 3 points4 points 6 months ago[-]

All I have to say is I was pleasantly surprised.

cigr 4 points5 points 6 months ago[-]

From EOT2 and the trailers I've seen, it looks like he'll do just fine.

Tennant was very good, but part of the appeal for me is the change in actors and attitude. Three or four years is enough for any actor playing Dr. Who. I really enjoyed DT's run, but I'm looking forward to Smith's Doctor as well.

InfinitelyThirsting 3 points4 points 6 months ago[-]

Five years. I'd have accepted five years. Three years is not enough. I will always, always pout.

cigr 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

Out of curiosity, were you a fan of the original series at all, or did you just start watching in the last few years?

InfinitelyThirsting 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

I was, of sorts, actually. My parents were big fans, so I grew up with Who in the house, and while I haven't seen more than a dozen of the episodes because they were hard to get back then (and my grandmother wouldn't surrender her VHS copies)(and hell, there are still missing episodes out there), I've read a whole lot of the books, and know most of the canon. My dad's downloaded all the available episodes, so I'll watch more eventually, but yes, I had my fandom rooted in the original series.

Fhel 3 points4 points 6 months ago[-]

I haven't watched the youtube preview yet, but I enjoyed what I saw at the end of Time. It was a little weird, and not as charming as "Mmm, new teeth" - but it's the fucking Doctor for sure.

InfinitelyThirsting 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

I dunno, in the midst of my weeping, the mildly horrified "I'm a girl!" made me laugh.

jax9999 2 points3 points 6 months ago[-]

I kinda liked him, i ddnt like DT at first so,who knows. gonna have to see him in action.

tesla333 6 points7 points 6 months ago[-]

Same here. I was really stuck on Eccleston until the fourth or fifth episode with the Tenth Doctor. I was impressed with his small performance at the end. I have high hopes for him. He's got some big shoes to fill, after all.

The weirdest thing is seeing the doctor with a more square-ish face to me. Very strange.

jnlaw 2 points3 points 6 months ago[-]

I thought so as well. I'm stupidly excited.

nofrak 2 points3 points 6 months ago[-]

2 Notes:

  • From certain angles, adjusted for hair, he really looks like Peter Davidson
  • I'm scared he's going to be too much like Tennant. Odd suit, young looking, slightly odd hair, same general kind of quirkiness. That would annoy me. 10 was too much like 9 in a lot of ways. I'd like to see a slightly more changed costume and a personality that develops in an actually new direction. We'll see.

rmccue 1 point2 points 6 months ago[-]

Yes.

not_nathan 2 points3 points 6 months ago* [-]

This looks so much better now that I have seen this. It looks like Elevensies is going to have a lot of fun. Also, I'm trying to keep in mind that the BBC is going to be showing all the flashiest stuff in the trailers, and so we haven't seen the new Doctor in a serious mode yet.

edit: Did you see how surprised he was when he punched that guy?

c-cal [S] 8 points9 points 6 months ago[-]

Wow, "Geronimo" really is his new catchphrase...

chaosrabbit 7 points8 points 6 months ago[-]

"Geronimo" just grates on my nerves for some reason. Is it an attempt to go after the BBCA demographic?

c-cal [S] 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

Well he was an amazing indian warchief...

Faustyna 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

I can live with that. Considering everything else the Doctor does for funsies and with his wardrobe, it's allowed.

Him holding a gun surprised me. I guess we'll see how that plays out, though. And the Daleks are back! They scare the pants off me...

Hope for a brilliant season, a brilliant Doctor, and a brilliant set of adventures.

not_nathan 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

There are some pretty solid rumors that The Daleks are going to be in World War II with Winston Churchill after getting some scientist to reinvent them, or take credit for them, as 'Ironsides'.

NotFake 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

My first thought when he was firing the gun was that it was for a signal or an attention getter. BANG! "Everyone listen up!"

not_nathan 3 points4 points 6 months ago[-]

Considering that the only time he said it in the trailer he was falling down a tube, and the only time he said it in the episode he was spoilers crashing the TARDIS, maybe he only says it when he's falling great distances.

SubGothius 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

Leaping or falling a great distance is indeed the traditional occasion for shouting "Geronimo!", so I'd reckon he would only ever utter it accordingly.

ddrt 1 point2 points 6 months ago[-]

Geronimo? .... ¬__¬ what happened to allon-zey?

delkarnu 3 points4 points 6 months ago[-]

That was Tennant, Eccleston had "Fantastic!", other doctors had their own things.

Driyen -1 points0 points 6 months ago[-]

I'm super excited for Matt Smith. David has been fantastic but its been 4 years, it's time for a change. I'm hoping for the best, as long as it doesn't include Germonio!

chewxy 0 points1 point 6 months ago[-]

I did think he was awesome. A bit mad though

sumdumusername 6 points7 points 6 months ago[-]

Well and see, that's exactly the Doctor. Not quite awesome, a bit mad though.

Except sometimes he is magnificent.

lazerdave 3 points4 points 6 months ago[-]

Agreed. The Doctor is a bit mad. You would be too if you'd been through it all.

Harkening back to the cafe scene with Wilf - I love seeing the side of the Doctor where he sees each regeneration as a death and "a new man sauntering off".

I shall miss Tennant, like I miss Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, Bakers (1&2), Davison, McCoy, McGann, and Eccleston. Splendid chaps....all of them.

pemboa -1 points0 points 6 months ago[-]

Sure we only saw him for 10 seconds but I thought he was awesome

Yah... 10seconds is pretty short.
