I think it's genuine on both sides. Abed doesn't seem to have any trouble experiencing emotions, he just doesn't express them as much as other people. He's more confused by some arbitrary social rules, like when it's okay to call out bitches, and when it's not. As he explained to Jeff, he understands life (and can distinguish it clearly from tv), but he prefers tv because it's structured and obeys a clear set of rules. Troy's unwavering loyalty is a huge assuring constant for Abed, plus they just like many of the same things, like video games, the Kickpuncher franchise, making friends with war criminals, beatboxing, silly morning show bits, and of course crumping.

Pretty sure I read that entirely in Abed's voice.

I think it's natural. Probably the most "normal" relationship between the people within the study group.

People on the autism spectrum are able to experience pretty much all the feelings that neurotypical people experience. Including love and friendship.

Just in case that's what this question was about.

Kindof depends where on the spectrum they are, given that lack of empathy can be a key indicator of the extremely autistic.

I think it's genuine. I mean, Troy is really the only one in the group that doesn't "go with Abed's flow" just to make life easier. He goes with it because he enjoys it, understands it, and want to be part of it. Similarly, Troy just does his thing, and Abed gets it.

Remember the scene where Troy is talking about how his greatest fear is to wake up as a donut because he would instantly eat himself? That scene convinces me it's for real.

NO it's television, and it's fantasy. But that's ok!
