America Airlines 777 on final approach to DFW with RAT deployed. (self.aviation)
submitted 3 months ago by [deleted]
Probably a test from Alliance to DFW, but I thought it was a neat find.

The RAT (Ram Air Turbine) is there to power the controls in the case of primary and backup power loss, 'case anyone else had to look it up like me!

Thanks!

Read up on the Gimli Glider, an Air Canada 767, if you want a cool account of flying on RAT power. As your airspeed decreases, RAT effectiveness drops, controls get heavy. Scary stuff.

Interesting location for it too... I was always under the impression these things were located near the nose.

The ERJ 170 and 190's have them in the nose too. There is a hydraulic hand pump and actuator to re-stow the RAT.

Never seen a RAT in the nose. RAT Trivia: They're spring-loaded and come down with terrific force. I know of 1 incident where one inadvertently deployed on the ground and killed a mechanic when it hit him in the head.

I guess I was under that impression because the only other RAT I saw deployed during normal operation was a CRJ:

How do they reset them after they deploy?
[–]oxiclean1 2 points3 points4 points 3 months ago
its a bombardier thing to have the RAT located there
[–]blackhawk6025 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago
DC10's have them near the nose as well.

on the 767's I work on there is a switch in the right main landing gear bay and it uses hydraulics

Ours (DAL) are stowed electrically.

Maintenance has to put it back. It's been too long since training…I forgot how they actually reset it.

Heck yeah, those always wake me up at 3am from KAFW-KDFW

So cute.

I thought the RAT was just used to keep the pilot's coffee machine operative when others systems fail!! ;)
all it takes is a username and password
create account
is it really that easy? only one way to find out...
already have an account and just want to login?
