Just remember cmd + shift makes a stick-Y.

Boom, you just remembered.

[–]lastres0rt 1 point2 points ago

I went a step further and made it a hotkey on my Wacom Tablet.

Why remember what you can hotkey?

[–]seansay 13 points14 points ago

wow, launch the stickies app on my Mac for the first time.

[–]tenhotuisku 3 points4 points ago

Yeah I use the dashboard stickies and just drag them into my main desktop. I like those ones better.

[–]Sodfarm 0 points1 point ago

Is that possible in Snow Leopard? I think was possible back in 10.4, all you had to do was hold onto the widget while closing the dashboard, but that doesn't seem to be the case with 10.6

[–]tenhotuisku 0 points1 point ago

Yes it is but you have to enable something in Terminal.

I'd love to help but since you only have to do it once it's been a while, try googling "dashboard widgets onto desktop" or something.

e. "Open the Terminal and type defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES and press Return. Then logout and log back in again. Now debugging mode is activated."

[–]operablesocks 5 points6 points ago

Same. "Well look at that. Stickies are still around."

[–]Bender248 0 points1 point ago

that was my thought, wasn't stickies something we used in mac os 6-7 ?

[–]ElvishJerricco[!] 0 points1 point ago

It was originally written on system 7, and supposedly has been exactly the same ever since its launch.

[–]clam_chips 30 points31 points ago

Damn. And I thought I knew it all.

[–]Sulisagus 10 points11 points ago

It's totally configurable from Service Preference.

I, for one, never use Stickies, but remapped it to make a new Notational Velocity note from current selection.

[–]EmmEff 4 points5 points ago

TIL about Notational Velocity

[–]khoker 0 points1 point ago

This is a great feature, but I wish there was a preference to stop NV from appearing and taking focus when you do this. Sometimes you just want to grab some text and file/title the note later.

[–]grumbles 1 point2 points ago

Mind elaborating on that? What are you using for menu title/command?

[–]Sulisagus 1 point2 points ago

What are you using for menu title/command?

By that I assume you mean setting up custom application shortcut? But what I'm talking about is setting up shortcut from Services Menu. It can be done from System Preferences > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts (tab) > Services.

[–]grumbles 0 points1 point ago

Ah! I added a new shortcut for NV via the Services section, and it ended up under Applications. I didn't even notice the pre-built NV shortcut. Thanks!

I don't have CMD on my keyboard, but I tried with CTRL, ALT, the Windows key, and even Shift... this doesn't seem to work on my computer.

[–]Stratocaster89 10 points11 points ago

It's amazing how often people dont notice things that are right in front of their faces. Such as your username.

[–]PossiblyTrolling 9 points10 points ago

i don't get it

[–]ConanReaction 3 points4 points ago

You know you're good at trolling when people don't check your username.

[–]sa1f 2 points3 points ago

Dunno if this would help, but try this. It can remap a few key combination to the command key.

[–]PossiblyTrolling 13 points14 points ago

Cool

Hey how do I tell if my Windows 7 has this Mac OX Tiger program on it?

[–]kingdave1000 6 points7 points ago

Take a look at the binary.

[–]PossiblyTrolling 0 points1 point ago

I looked in add remove programs I can't find it

[–]kingdave1000 10 points11 points ago

Did you try to reinstall the internet?

[–]PossiblyTrolling 3 points4 points ago

You mean like the internet explorer?

[–]kingdave1000 5 points6 points ago

No, you have to reinstall all of the internets.

[–]PossiblyTrolling 2 points3 points ago*

is that the one where I delete c:\windows\system32 then download bing again?

can i just download mac ox straight from microsoft? I thought I already had it in my memory though

[–]kingdave1000 5 points6 points ago

You have to download the mac osx from google and put it into your system32 folder.

[–]jercshore 1 point2 points ago

Look in the System32 folder. You might have to delete some files, but its definitely worth it.

[–]afrobat 1 point2 points ago

You can alternatively set control as the command key or remap all the modifier keys by going to sys prefs > keyboards > Modifier Keys

[–]PossiblyTrolling -1 points0 points ago

I can't find prefs in the control panel

please help

[–]elgranputo -3 points-2 points ago

lol

[–]photokeith 11 points12 points ago

TIL sticky notes are still around!

[–]ltjboy03 0 points1 point ago

I honestly don't know what I'd do without that program. I use it daily and have probably 30 sticky notes strewn about my screen.

[–]bluthru 0 points1 point ago

30? Maybe consider just using a text edit file?

[–]ltjboy03 0 points1 point ago

Nah. Each corner of my screen is dedicated to different topics arranged by color. It's a chaotic but workable system for me. I can find any daily information I'd need in seconds.

[–]notzak 6 points7 points ago

You can even use it to put a video or picture in a sticky.

Why you would want to? Because you goddamn can.

[–]jorjin 4 points5 points ago

Great. How do you close it?!

[–]saralk[S] 9 points10 points ago

There's a tiny little square in the corner which you need to click on http://imgur.com/rsxPi

[–]jorjin 1 point2 points ago

Thank you for this heroic deed.

[–]coob 0 points1 point ago

Try doing that on Lion haha. Stickies looks like it was ignored for testing with the new resize-from anywhere on the edge stuff.

Cmd-W

[–]ltjboy03 1 point2 points ago

CMD+W. It's how you close any window on a mac btw.

[–]realgenius 2 points3 points ago

Thanks. I will rediscover Stickies in 2012.

[–]iSteve 11 points12 points ago

Or you can drag highlighted text to the desktop.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]iSteve 2 points3 points ago

no, but it's easy.

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]iSteve 0 points1 point ago

Perhaps easier than remembering the seldom used key sequence.

[–]santifc 2 points3 points ago

Not with Firefox, or at least not with Firefox and the Web developer plugin

[–]JeanLucSkywalker 0 points1 point ago

Works for me.

[–]chonnes 2 points3 points ago

I highlighted the OP link and pressed Cmd + Shift + Y and the created sticky note included BOTH the text and the link. I did not know that the stickies app could manage clickable links.

[–]paultjeb 0 points1 point ago

I wish it was possible to share stickies over several desktops and/or several users.

[–]jcopacetic 7 points8 points ago

Evernote.

[–]patricksonion 0 points1 point ago

Thanks for the tip! This is awesome

[–]astrashe 0 points1 point ago

This is really cool. Thanks!

[–]mja211 0 points1 point ago

This doesn't work in Mail.

[–]takirami 0 points1 point ago

Ive always wondered what use those sticky notes presented. i feel like they're just in the way..

[–]HikaruDigi 0 points1 point ago

This, is, sweet!

[–]giveitago 0 points1 point ago

Has something to do with xmarks tab sync on mine.

[–]Goose36 0 points1 point ago

Duly sticky noted.

[–]yhc05 0 points1 point ago

TIL Apple need to show us those kind of shortcut when we use a Mac for the first time.

[–]sopleme06 0 points1 point ago

TIL that my computer has a sticky note app

[–]upvoteforyouhun 0 points1 point ago

Thanks!

[–]ElvishJerricco[!] 0 points1 point ago

Anyone know of using this on a Bluetooth keyboard connected to iOS will create a new note with the text? That'd be kinda cool.

[–]dhjdhj 1 point2 points ago

This is very serendipitous. I like stickies a lot in principle but I hate the implementation that comes with OS X because it's an all or nothing situation. I.e. I can create a sticker, put info on it but if I close the sticker, I lose the information. There are many times when I want to have some information on my desktop but when I'm done, I don't want to lose it forever as I might want it again in the future.

What I'd like is a note system system that allows SOME of the notes to be stuck on my desktop but when I close them, the information is not deleted, just stored.

Any recommendations? Free or paid, I don't care....looking for best of breed.

[–]lastres0rt 1 point2 points ago

It doesn't offer you the option to save it as a text file or something? Mine does...

[–]dhjdhj 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, but that's not really "managed" and then you end up with text files all over the place -- how would get them back into sticky format again?

[–]Eurasian-HK 0 points1 point ago

i would use the stickies on the dashboard then. I have a number of virtual post it notes on my dashboard. Some are even years old.

[–]amazinnn 0 points1 point ago

How do you make multiple ones?

[–]Eurasian-HK 2 points3 points ago

Press the Philips head looking button on the bottom left corner of Dashboard and then add another stickie to the dashboard.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points ago

the Philips head looking button

Weirdest way of saying "plus sign" ever.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

I little grey house with large roof buttoned this comment.

[–]amazinnn 1 point2 points ago

And all this damn time I was posting multiple shit on one sticky note. Man I feel like an idiot now...

[–]dhjdhj 0 points1 point ago

Yes, but I just want SOME of them to be visible --- I also don't want to have to switch to dashboard view (although I'm aware of the trick for making dashboard widgets show up on main window)

[–]modeliste 0 points1 point ago

What key combo do i press to create a sticky note in the dashboard out of the currently highlighted text?
