Is your current mac your first mac? (self.apple)
submitted 4 months ago by hehdot
Mac sales have skyrocketed the past few years, I'm wondering how many people in this subreddit are using their first mac, and how many have been using macs for ages. If it's your first mac what are your experiences? Would you go back to a windows pc?

Macintosh SE represent, with the optional 20MB hard drive. Although, I don't use Apple computers anymore.
officemonkey 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]
The Mac SE was my first computer, and it was responsible for me getting my first job (using Canvas to draw drilling logs at an engineering firm).
But I'm pretty much OS agnostic. I've used Windows at work almost exclusively since 1992. I took a couple stabs at Linux in the late 1990s, but that ended when Mac OS X got stable.
My current machine is a iMac 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and I've got a windows bootcamp partition for some games.
I think my next machine will be a Linux box, mostly because the applications I use have equivalents on Linux. And of course, the windows partition for games.
drewhenson 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]
Yeah, we run Linux exclusively at home nowadays.
skuzz 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]
SE was my first personal Mac as well, I was previously on Apple II. I still miss Cannon Fodder.
I remember the first time I signed onto eWorld with that thing and I was like "so this is something that kinda hooks into the Internet. Neato!" I was in 6th grade.

Hells yes, although I loved my Portable more, since I could hang at the local coffee shop before that was cool.

I never owned one (I held out for an 030 IIcx). But I know many a Ph.D who banged their dissertations out on those puppies. And i mean banged because that keyboard was something else.
When I was in HS we had 8 of them and two SE's to put out our newspaper. They all went up in flames one by one due to the 'flyback' transformer that was used on the analog board.
According to low-end mac.. the Plus had the longest production life 1987 to 1990 and was supported by OS till 1996!
iranintoavan 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]
I'm picking up one of these from my friend for 5 bucks tomorrow. She says it still turns on but doesn't run.
Any ideas of something cool to do with it?
we used to get these fans that slid into the top of the machine.. there's a handle on top (believe the called these transportable?). anyway it snapped into that grip and went over the top grilles. you could do the same with an old box fan from a pc or just cut a hole in the side with a router or jig saw. most people just added more holes to compensate.

I grew up building computers, and I had always been a PC man, reinforced by my experiences in middle in elementary school with OS 9. Then, senior year, I started composing on the school computers in garage band. I was sold on the interface, and couldn't believe how intuitive and intelligently designed it was. I then went to an apple store, and talked the nitty gritty with an apple nerd, resolving all my "apple can't do this" questions. (you can access the code just as easily, i wouldn't have to give up torrenting software, and worst case scenario, theres always parallels and boot camp) the only real reason not to get a mac, is lack of money. That said, I bought my first mac, the top of the line MBP in 2007. The first 3 months I had awful buyer's remorse. Trying to transition to the interface was hell, because I knew the windows OS in and out, and not being able to do the most simple tasks was infuriating. That's why, now, I try and answer any questions people have who are transitioning. They say once you go mac, you don't go back, it's true. Mac does occasionally have an issue, but it's not even close to the scale of windows ( i should give the disclaimer that I haven't used windows 7 yet, but it looks like they just jacked the mac UI once again). I've also become a designer, which helps, as that was the original field that macs were marketed to, and the only field, to my knowledge, that macs are the industry standard.

What'd you use? I've got Reason, Live, and Logic and can't settle on one...
[deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago[-]
For production I've always used Logic. I think it handles MIDI very well and it just comes ready to go with so many different synths and what not. That said, I think Reason's interface is really cool but it's obviously not a one stop shop because you can't record audio. Also, Live seems great for doing things on the fly (thus, the name). I feel like if I had started off using Live I'd be pretty happy with it, and I've definitely enjoyed messing around with it. As far as what I used on the job, it was almost always Pro Tools, which I think is still the best for recording and audio editing. I would also use Logic on the job when people wanted to write beats and record audio at the same time. Anyhow, I've quit audio engineering and gone back to school. It was fun for a while (and I did get to work with a few famous people here and there) but I didn't really see a bright future in the industry. I felt like after six months I was doing the same things that an engineer who was doing it for 8 years had been doing. The few guys that mix the huge records definitely make some serious cash, but I didn't feel like I had the passion (or the ear, perhaps), to be one of those guys. To get back to the topic of this thread: I'm on my second mac (Macbook Pro). The first one is a G5 that I bought about six years ago. I actually purchased it when I was getting into doing music stuff on computers and decided that Logic was the software I really wanted to concentrate on.

I bought an iMac about the same time as I started using Windows 7 (both at home and at work), and it really is a huge improvement on previous Windows version. If you're a Mac user now, I don't think you'd feel all that "ripped off" using Windows 7. Rather, it would feel more familiar and more intuitive the way OS X does. (albeit, in "the Windows way" :>)
If you don't need to use Windows computers, then I truly envy you. However, if you do, you could do a lot worse than Windows 7.
Nicholie 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]
Practically the same story here. Computer nut, built gaming rigs for years, even worked in the all Windows IT world.... and bought my first Macbook Pro in 07. Haven't looked back yet.
It's like I can keep my personal computer experience separated from my work one. And that's a wonderful thing.

Awesome. Can you tell me how to get a web page full screen in a browser on OSX? Any browser, I don't care. In Linux and Windows it's F11, but on Macs I can;t get rid of the menu at the top no matter what I do.

I bought my MacBook Pro in may 2008, it's my first. I love it. I put in an Intel SSD (80 GB), it's fast as lightning. I have a startup time of about 20 sec, shutdown of 5-10. Photoshop is ready in 5-6 sec.
I have a Windows PC at work, I don't like it. It's way too slow in comparison, I hate the way the antivirus software kills startup speed. I've asked my boss to buy me an iMac, he's thinking about it.
The only thing I don't like about my MacBook is the left fan: it's noisy at default speed. I should replace it.
thudson 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago[-]
My Blackbook from 2007 is still my first and current Mac and have no intentions of going back.
I thought about upgrading or getting something beefier, but then I realized this thing, which has only a RAM upgrade, still chugs along and acts like a champ.
I use a Windows PC at work and it's pretty painful.
And regarding OP question: I've considered building a media center/torrent box that COULD have Windows, but in all reality it would always boot to Boxee or XBMC.
eetmorturkee 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago[-]
I've got an 06 MBP that is my first... It's barely hanging in there on it's second DVD Drive and second HDD, both of which I replaced myself. Upside is that they're both better than what I replaced, but downside is that something's not right with the computer now, and I can't figure out what it is :-/ :(
tophat02 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]
I'm in the exact same situation. Bought mine new in 06 and it was my first Mac. Things are starting to go a bit south with it (especially the battery) but not so bad that I really care.
I'm going to try and keep the thing for another couple of years, perhaps by giving her a speed boost with an Intel SSD. In the end, the thing that will finally force me to upgrade is the damn 2GB memory limitation. Suck.
lunarbase 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]
What do you have to say about these SSD disks? I heard they wear out pretty easy!
pdongen 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]
Well, I'm really satisfied with their speed, it makes a huge difference for me.
I don't know if they really wear out easyliy, but I did have problems with mine. It stopped working after 8 months. This was a first-generation SSD and I got it replaced with a G2 for free :) This one works fine now, it's been in for about 4 months now.
thanks!
thehigherlife 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]
what did you read on deciding which ssd was right for your needs?
I read a review on Tom's Hardware, to make sure it was technically decent.
Then I read a review somewhere else, I think this one, stating that Intel was way ahead of it's competition (don't know if that's still the case, though :))

Macs hardly ever die permanently; you just move up to a newer, faster model when you can afford it. I've still got my first, a PowerMac 7200/75 that's now 15 years old, still runs perfectly fine with Mac OS 9.2.2 on one partition and Xubuntu Hardy on another (which I really ought to upgrade, maybe I'll try installing Lucid next month, just for the heck of it and to confirm my install procedure still works :^).

lectrick 3 points4 points5 points 4 months ago* [-]
Power Computing still had one of the best ad campaigns I've ever seen from any computer maker.
Their booth at MacWorld trade shows was always popular, and was populated (as I recall) with hot booth babes in camo gear wielding guns. (A memorable image for my nerdy teenage self of the time, to be sure.)
They fed directly into the resist Wintel hegemony mentality that was popular at the time.
Here is the ad they ran when Steve Jobs killed the clones.
The "Let's Kick Intel's Ass" ads are of course smirk-inducing in hindsight.
stilesjp 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]
That computer was simply amazing, and it blew the socks off pretty much anything Apple was making, at the time. It was a real shame when Apple decided to stop outside licensing... but, from a business perspective (Apple's, at least) it seems like it did well for them.
lectrick 2 points3 points4 points 4 months ago* [-]
The problem was the news, and thusly PR. As the clones grew the overall Mac market while eating a bit into Apple's profits, the fucking news insisted on only covering Apple's own marketshare as it was probably more newsworthy to over-dramatize the situation than to say "well, apple's slice of the pie is shrinking, but hey all mac compatibles are actually gaining marketshare!" Had they considered all Mac compatibles at the time, Mac OS was actually doing really well. Eventually this bad and wholly false PR hurt ALL Mac compatible sales as people thought Macs were dying in general, when in fact Power Computing (and the other compatibles) were kicking so much ass that they were simply visibly cutting into Apple's profits.
To this day I still don't understand why reputable news agencies would focus only on Apple's bottom line instead of the total Mac OS bottom line simply to paint a dramatically dark picture.. I never saw a single blip on the news radar of Power Computing having contributed to overall Mac OS marketshare. I can't tell you how many times I read "beleaguered computer maker" in an article about Apple.
The equivalent would have been the news reporting only on IBM's faltering profits as the PC compatibles proliferated. "IBM is dying! Everyone flee to Apple!"... If only ;)

Bought this MBP last April because I was looking to finally get myself a laptop to accompany my Windows desktop. Well, I've barely touched the PC other than file transfers since. I love the Mac, I love OSX, and I really can't see myself purchasing anything other than a Mac from here on out.
Some rail against it, but for me the top-to-bottom consistency that you get from Apple designing the hardware and software for the machine is really incredible. "It just works" because most of the major applications seem to be built the same way, and third-party developers seem to follow the same philosophy as well. I don't know if that's due to the tools used to build software for Mac or what, but I like it.
Overall I expected to be impressed, but I was really blown away. They are awesome machines.
ps- I still have a pretty nice quad-core running Vista at work, and it serves me just fine. I can and do still get along with Windows, but given the choice, I'd rather not at this point.

I've been using Apple/Mac since the early 1980s. Family's first computer was an Apple II+ then an Apple IIe. Neighbors had a Lisa, which at the time was quite cool. I've used Mac's ever since, with a brief stint using an Atari ST2. I own a Windows box as well, mostly for games now, but at one time it was used for cross-platform stuff. Always had at least a tower and a few times both a tower and a laptop (both Mac), now I use laptop for everything, currently a MacBook Pro which I'll upgrade when the lines gets a make over.

Bought my first white Macbook in late 2008 for school after convincing both my brother and sister in 2007 to buy a Macbook/Macbook Pro (which they now love), and after having used a Hackintosh for 2 years. Sold my Macbook in mid-2009 so I could wait and buy a unibody MB during the next back-to-school promotion. The next update came in June, releasing the new 13" MBP, and I bought the base model in August. I have a Windows 7 desktop for gaming and heavy rendering, but I'll never go back to a Windows-only setup. Mac OS is just so pleasant to use. Everything is so unified, and most of the time it just works, whereas with my Windows 7 machine I already have occasional explorer.exe crashes (and the install is only 3 months old).

I've had a few. First was PPC Mac Mini (2004) that I mostly used as a server. Then I got an Intel MBP 15" (2006). All of them are working just fine and I've only replaced the battery in my MBP. The rest is original and the PPC Mac Mini is still kicking ass as a server.

I think it's more that it's a circlejerk. This is r/apple, for one thing.
Personally, I bought a Mac, found things to like, things to dislike, and now have settled on Linux on a Thinkpad. I recognize there are some thing a Mac does particularly well - I just don't do any of them, and I find the damn thing pretty infuriating. Macs work beautifully and are "intuitive" if you submit yourself to OS X's will completely. If you try to make it do things your way, you're lost.

My ex-wife had a mac, which she gave to me when she went to grad school and got a PC. I have a MacBook pro and it's my favorite thing ever, except for maybe my iPhone.

Yup. Vista pushed me over the edge. When I was offered a computer at work last year I chose a macbook under the reasoning that if I didn't like it, I could just keep it booting on windows xp. Leopard is great. As far as firefox, office and some other programs I use go, it's more or less the same.
I'm not a big "PC sucks" guy all of the sudden. I've bought a PC netbook and PC nettop as a htpc for my tv since then (though with vista wiped out and xp installed on both). But that said, my next major home pc will be a macbook pro. If you're into computers, going to mac is like upgrading to a benz or bmw.

The first was an iBook G4, bought as soon as I saw OS X Tiger becoming a proper *nix. It's still around and has never failed me. I have never used OS9 or earlier (but I'm looking into buying a Color Classic to rectify that).
I have acquired quite a few other Macs since - I prefer the straightforward nature of OS X and attention to detail indie developers on Mac are showing. (But I would probably be almost-as-happy, and not much richer, with a Thinkpad running something like Ubuntu)

My first, MBP bought in 2008. I've always liked windows and still do; I think it's amazing that it can work on so many different hardware platforms.
But as an electrical engineer I just love elegant design in electronics.
This MBP is gorgeous on so many levels that comparing the user experience between Windows and a Mac is like driving a '92 cavalier and a Lexus. They both take you from A to B, but one just makes the experience a beautiful thing. If you can't tell the difference (like me with cars) then don't waste the money, but if you can, it's easily worth it.

daelin 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]
This is technically my third Mac.
My very first Mac, which I don't count, was a PowerBook G4 in 2001 that I owned for about a week before I returned. I absolutely hated OS 9, and you couldn't spend all your time in Mac OS X 10.0 because you couldn't even play DVDs. I loved the hardware though. It had an ultracapacitor in it so you could swap the battery while the machine was sleeping. I picked up a Sony PictureBook (the one with a Cruz processor) and kept that for two weeks before returning it because (1) they announced a HUGE upgrade the day after I paid for it, but before I even received it, and after I explicitly asked the sales rep if there was an upgrade imminent, and (2) the Sony software absolutely crippled an otherwise awesome little machine.
I got by without a laptop, until Mac OS X 10.2 came out in 2002, and Mac OS 9 was no longer included by default on new Macs. I bought an iBook G4. That tiny little white wonder served me for over five years, until I tripped over the cord for the last time and broke the charging circuit in early 2008. Before my iBook, I did everything on my home-built PCs. I ran Linux, and didn't even have Windows installed. I played games under Wine. After some time with my iBook, I realized that my PC had shut down during a long power outage possibly weeks ago, and I'd never noticed. I re-partitioned and set up dual-booting so I could play games on it. I realized my video card had video-in, and I started watching and recording TV on it. That was all I did with that desktop computer. I learned to program every language I know (C++, Java, C, Python…) on the iBook. I lived in that iBook. I learned LaTeX. I did physics. I diagnosed and fixed home and school networks, and repaired Windows computers with my iBook. I wore off the keys. The smooth case had the optical texture of brushed aluminum from all the micro scratches. It kept working flawlessly, except for a slight creak it developed, and a strange ability for the trackpad to detect movement at a distance. (Electrostatic buildup due to worn-through grounding, most likely.)
When it finally gave up the ghost, I got a 15" MacBook Pro (Intel). It was stolen a year later, and I registered for a student developer account to purchase the brand new unibody 17" MacBook Pro.
Losing my 15" was traumatic, but I had just gotten a Time Capsule as a gift that Christmas. Whoever stole it was smart enough to never take it online, and most likely wiped it. I was concerned about losing my personal information. When I got my brand new 17" MacBook Pro, I turned it on, told it to restore my data from the Time Capsule, and tada everything was as I left it. (I lost two weeks of data because I was on a trip at the time it was stolen, but otherwise it was magical.)
I would never purchase a Windows laptop ever again. I've owned three, and they were all steaming piles of shit, mostly because of the manufacturer's shitty pre-installs. The only time I've ever enjoyed a Windows laptop was when I wiped it and installed Linux. When I got my first Macs, I always thought I'd dual-boot to a PPC linux like Yellowdog (in 2001) or (today) Ubuntu, or a BSD. I never installed linux on my iBook. I never installed Linux on my MacBooks.
I mostly live in the Unix environment of OS X. I might build or buy a unix machine that's not a portable; a fileserver, or media center. I've kept an eye on Microsoft's offerings, and I've mostly felt embarrassment for Microsoft after reading these things. No, I'd never go back to Windows in the current environment. Maybe Windows 2020 will be a different story, but I doubt it. Microsoft appears to have cultivated an executive culture that breeds sucking.

Yep. 15" MacBook Pro, my first mac.
I actually use lots of different OSs. Almost daily, in one way or another, I use: Windows (XP), OS X, FreeBSD and Linux (Ubuntu and Debian).
In terms of the OS alone, OS X is definitely the most polished and immediately usable convergence of the four. UNIXy things are hard work (or sometimes impossible) on Windows, and configuration can be painful on Linux/BSD (although usually possible, eventually).
OS X is light years ahead of Windows in terms of general usability and the cohesiveness of the interface. But, for me at least, it's definitely not perfect. I struggle a lot with the keyboard shortcuts, and even key locations, being different. I've sorted out most of them (with a combination of a few 3rd party programs, a custom keyboard map, and a custom cocoa shortcuts file), but not completely, and it does have an effect on my productivity. I still haven't found a text editor that satisfies all my needs, either.
The lack of a nice GUI for many customisation options (and some things actually being apparently impossible to customise) is one of the areas that bothers me slightly. But in all, it's a great machine. Lovely hardware, and out of the box OS X is miles ahead of anything else.
One thing that does bother me a little is Apple's "magic mouse". In almost every way it's harder to use than a typical mouse. While I consider my MacBook to be an excellent example of functional industrial design (and the trackpad is fucking amazing), the mouse seems like it's just style-over-substance.

Imac 20" 2.16ghz 2gb ram. I like it, I had reservations due to the price but find it easy to use and learn into. I purchased the extended warranty and am glad because I had a screen go in the second year. As far as a creative tool, it just feels right. I run snow leopard, LOVE keynote, not sure if I like imovie 09,or the new garage band. While I like my mac very much, I would like to try building a pc next with Ubuntu or something. Another mac might happen depending on durability of my current one. I hate to think about computer replacement any sooner than 5 years from purchase (07) and I do wish someone would make a desktop that was a ten year thing and built to sustain upgrades that would keep it viable in technologically fast changing world we live in. I just think its a waste at our current pace. I mean what else would spend the money we do on something that is outdated in the time frame we now have. But I dont want to go cloud either. In other words...maybe

Using my first mac, a 2008 mac mini. Since I got it I haven't used my windows computer for anything but gaming. It being a *nix machine is one of the top reasons for the switch. I can be much much much more productive with a command line interface, especially for the programming work I do. And when I'm not programming and just futzing around, the OS X interface is aesthetically pleasing (which yes, is an important factor for me :p).
My mother needed a new computer recently and I talked her into getting an iMac. She says she'll never use a Windows computer again. :p

I just got my first Mac last monday :) It's an iMac 27'' i7 with 8GB RAM and I'm really happy with it so far.
I work as a sysadmin and really have no big problem with Windows. However I wanted a monitor and a faster machine at home as my only home PC has been a Lenovo T60p for some years now. ( + I don't even own a tv).
So I ended up with the iMac because it beautiful, functional and it gives me the opportunity the learn my way around a new OS. Also I'm a photo nerd so it seamed natural on many levels.
I've installed Windows 7 on a bootcamp partition for a few games and other Windows centric needs. In OS X I've installed VMware Fusion so I can start up the bootcamp partition as a VM if I need. Plus I've install Ubuntu, FreeBSD and Mojo OS in other VMs to play around with.
Right now I'm looking at installing Plex as a media center solution.
Very happy with the everything so far.

I liked Boxee better than Plex, I put it on a Mac Mini that I hooked up to an HDTV and it works beautifully. Plex was crashy. There's nothing wrong with installing them both, of course :)

My Mac is my first, but I have had a lot of problems with Snow Leopard. So I downgraded to Leopard again. Also the battery time is hardly as advertised. I've formatted several times. That's a lot of hours wasted.
I don't play games and I just wanted a solid computer for web design, redditing, watching movies, etc, so I chose a MacBook Pro.
I want to like my Mac, but I don't know if it's worth the extra money. I will probably choose a Lenovo or something similar next time.
What kinds of issues did you have with Snow Leopard? It's been pretty flawless for me but I may not use the same apps. I am a web developer who spends a lot of time in various browsers, TextMate, Photoshop knockoffs, and Terminal.
GoodMusicTaste 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]
The computer came with 10.5, and I simply upgraded it. But everything felt slower after the upgrade. I browsed the apple forums and a lot of people had the same issues. Safari was really slow after the update and it sometimes took 30 seconds to open a new top sites window. Random freezes would occur too, in Finder for example. A lot of beachballing. The UI animations (mostly the dock) seemed sluggish. But the overall slowness did it for me.
So I tried doing a clean install, I read it solved the issues for some people. Not much change there. Top Sites bug still there. So now I think I'm staying with Leopard until 10.7 or 10.6.3 comes out, even though I really like some of the new features.

Mac SE was my first machine as well. I do not miss the days of swapping floppy diskettes to switch between OS and applications. :P
After that I had a Performa 410. Then, I switched to PCs for a while during the Apple dark ages. I jumped back with a 12" Powerbook in college and am now working on a C2D iMac.

Not by a long shot. I had a (hand me down) IIfx and a (also hand me down) Performa 600, though I can't remember which I got first. I also used my dad's PowerBook 180c for a time. This was all in the early 90s. Then I didn't get a new Mac until a PowerBook 1400cs in 1997, followed by an iMac G3 slot-loader in ~2000, a Pismo G3 lappy, a couple of tiBooks, a couple of aluminum PowerBook G4s, then an original MacBook Pro, a couple of Mac Minis, a non-Pro MacBook, and now a loaded MacBook Pro on the go and an iMac 20" at home.
And all this, even considering I used to work at Apple, I'm not even a fanboy. My business is principally run on Ubuntu boxen, and I have a PC at home for gaming. In fact, probably because I used to work at Apple, I hate Mac fanboys with a passion you probably don't want to see...

I posted this in another thread the other day, but it seems to fit better ...
I've used Microsoft based computers since I was 6 and DOS 3.2 came out. I have used Linux at work and on and off at home since 1998 (started with Redhat 5.0). I am also a sysamin for a 350 PC windows/linux/AIX environment at work.
Around the end of 2008 my XP machine decided that the hardware would start dying a slow death. I made the decision in March 2009 to make the jump to a Refurb 2.8Ghz 24" iMac for the new family computer. I had a friend who would buy refurbs from apple.com and said that they were just as good as new ones. I will NEVER go back to a PC at home. I've had my iMac for over a year now and have had NO problems with it what so ever. It still runs just as good (if not better thanks to Snow Leopard) as the day I got it. My wife and two kids also our iMac! I have a Drobo with two 1TB drives and a 1TB time machine drive hooked up to it and couldn't be happier! Now my wife would love to get a 13" Macbook Pro for the house as well. If the iPad was compatible with the site that she has to do her lesson plans on, I'm sure she would love to get one of those instead. I do run an older Dell M1330 at work with Windows 7 Pro on it, but I'm working on trying to get a Macbook Pro as a replacement. ;)
My Dad has had also switched to a new Macbook as his work computer about 6 months before I did. Although he needs Windows for his business, he just runs XP in Parallels and he said that it runs faster virtually than it did on his old Toshiba (I was also able to make a direct image for parallels of his old Toshiba, so he never had to reinstall anything). He has since upgraded to a Refurb 13" Macbook Pro and gave his Macbook to my Step-Mom and she loves it as well. She likes her's so much that she bought her Mom a new Macbook to replace her aging Toshiba laptop.
This Christmas, my Dad also purchased my 90/yo grandmother a Refurb Macbook Air as a replacement for her older Acer laptop and she loves it. With having really bad arthritis, the 15" Acer was way to heavy for her to lift into her lap on her recliner. She like to use her Macbook Air to video conference using Skype with relatives that are out of state.
My brother also used to be a PC person, but he went to film school where as part of the package he received a Macbook Pro. He is now a Mac person and loves his laptop.
We all were PC people a few years ago, and now most of my family are running Apple computers and I don't ever see them looking back. They are just so happy with the product experience and like how few problems they have with them. Of the few problems that did come up, having Applecare got the issue fixed very quickly.
I firmly believe that it has nothing to do with the power of the hardware or the tech specs, with Apple, it all has to do with the experience of using the product and having it be a pleasure to use.
I've used PC's since I was 6, bought my first Mac at 28, I don't EVER see myself going back.

I was a long-time Windows user (and one of those dingbats who used to spew about Macs being "toy" computers that couldn't do this or that). My first Mac was an LC II I bought for $10 at a local computer shop back in 2001. Just wanted to see what Macs were like, and $10 for a complete setup was a steal. Today, it wouldn't be very practical to be using a 16mhz computer running System 7, but I was impressed with how much you could do with so little power - it seemed more responsive and more useful than a 16mhz 386 (not to mention System 7 looks a lot classier than Windows 3.x) . That sparked my curiosity which led me to switch. I only use Windows for games now.

Started with this MacBook 2007 before I left for college. Prior to that I was a gamer/tweaker type. Didn't have the cash to build my own pc, so I'd do my best to screw up whatever pc was sitting in the family area (read: tweak it as much as possible until I did something stupid). Aside from learning everything I knew about PCs then, I ended up being the one to maintain the computer 24/7. Somewhere between then and picking up the MB, I decided I didn't want to deal with maintenance on a constant basis, so I decided to go with a Macbook. I still use both when I'm home (windows 7 installed)
That and driving down to delaware with a student discount + no tax ended up saving me a boatload with their student deals (+ printer/ipod nano).

One my 7th and 8th Mac. 1st Mac was a 7100 back in the mid-90s but I was using Macs earlier at HP (yes, really).
Just helped someone with a Windows problem: needless to say I was swearing under my breath every time yet another compounded, UI-unfriendly, dependent issue needed to be fixed: started with the goal of A (backing up some disk volume files onto a new external disk), but could not because B and C needed to be fixed. Couldn't get to B because D wasn't working which required de-installing E and F, then reinstalling them, but I had to find E's driver online (which wasn't easily available for the platform and version of XP) and E was then dependent on G, H and I being reconfigured. What should have been a 10 minute job took all day.
I thanked my good sense that my own machines are all Macs: on a Mac the same task is a 10 minute job and I know that because I've done the same a dozen times and it's reliably a 10 minute job without fuss or muss.
You couldn't pay me enough to return to Windows; I'd sooner go back to a VAX or Apollo Domain workstation, which were horrid in their own ways. As it is I'm pushing hard to port our software products to Mac (we have it already on Linux) and hopefully someday we can discontinue the Windows versions - I can dream (and plan). We can embed a Mac (Mini) as easily as we already embed a Wintel or Linux box but it will have a far smaller usability hazard footprint which translates into reduced support costs (better margins for us) and better product usability for customers (better adoption of our products).

I love spaces. Viewing multiple windows at once has revolutionised the way I work on my computer. I can create simple artistic things like party invites and cards with ease. The terminal is great. Dashboard is a fantastic idea and makes all my work much more efficient. I haven't experienced any compatibility issues at all. Everything just works! Thank god! I don't have to worry about saving everything before walking away from my computer for fear of it crashing. I don't have to save links for fear of the browser crashing. That is probably the best thing - it works.
All in all I love it! And unless Windows brought out something that was better and more intuitive/productive no I would not go back.

First mac. Last generation MacBook Pro 15".
RAM upgrade after about 6 months of use. HD upgrade once the warranty went (not a "sanctioned" upgrade on this model — had to open the whole unit).
Power button was sunken into its hole unevenly from the factory. Never bothered to get it corrected.
Top "lip" of the slot-loading DVD drive is slightly bent downward. Doesn't prevent discs loading, but they annoyingly get stuck half-way out when ejecting.
3 big discoloration spots on the screen around the Apple logo. Annoying, but manageable.
Big ugly gray splotches on the palm rests where I've worn them down.
Several keys, the worst being the left command key, have their coatings worn through almost completely.
Started with 10.4, then 10.5. now 10.6.
No AppleCare. No problems. No serious complaints.

…I kind of went on a buying rampage with my Macs. I used windows/dos PCs from 1991-2006. and linux from 1997ish-2006. Then instead of buying a good graphic design monitor I purchased an iMac because adobe offered to upgrade me from my Windows Licence to a Mac one when I upgraded from CS to CS2.
I bought my iMac in 06 and loved it so much that I replaced my Toshiba notebook with a MBP and bought aapl stock. I bought an asus for a good price in 07 and had tons of hardware issues. I bought a macbook for corporate training in 2007. I bought a iMac late 08, then a 13 inch macbook pro in 2009.

Prodigal Mac son here, returned after a decade-long hiatus. I'm OS agnostic overall, and since so many things have moved to web apps, I'm able to take a base install of most any OS and turn it into something I can be productive with after minimal customization.
That said, since my MacBook Pro is my first OS X machine, I have to say that I'm incredibly happy with my choice to switch. I love having a Unix shell accessible and an OS that is completely designed for my hardware (I don't knock Windows, but most OEMS suck ass at integrating their hardware with the OS). I've had the Mac for 9 months now, which is usually the point at which I have to rebuild Windows because of all the stuff I've installed on it.

Other than the old school LC that the family had in 1990 or so ... the beauty MacBook Pro I'm rocking at the moment is my first Mac. And loving it.
Love/hate the fact that, for all intents and purposes, games aren't developed for it.

Mac Classic. I can't imagine the circumstances that could make me switch. Well, maybe if they ported Lunatic Fringe and Dark Castle to Windows 7....

My first Mac depends on your definition of Mac. I started out with an Apple II+, then a IIc. In college I used a Quadra 650 (still my favorite for some reason) and a Performa 6400. If you really stretch the meaning of Mac, I'd been running a stable 10.5.2 Kalyway until last week when I finally got 10.6.2 running. Somewhere in my basement I've got two Mac classics hanging around that need boot discs. Between the Hackintosh, I was running Windows 2000 at home but Macs at work. It was the constant reinstalling of Windows and associated headaches that pushed me to build my Mac.

I'm still on my first one. It's three and half years old now. It's a second generation black macbook. I have had two PC laptops before it and they always imploded in some way after about a year. I am glad Macs are built to last. I want to get another one, but this one is actually still up to snuff, so I'll probably hold out.

I'm using an early 2007 model Macbook and it's the first Mac I've ever owned. I enjoy the simplicity of the OS and the hardware itself is fine. The only complaint I have is the Intel GMA 950 graphics are pretty much crap (though I knew this when I bought it). I could easily see myself getting several more years out of this laptop before I upgrade again though.
When I do decide to upgrade I'm not sure which path I'm going to take. I would like to get one of the i7 Macbook Pros if/when they ever come out but the more I think about the cost the less I want to upgrade. I've been using Windows 7 at work for the last few months and I really like it and I can easily get a laptop running Windows 7 with the i7 processor for at least half of what I could get a Macbook Pro for. Decisions, decisions....

This Macbook is the first one I bought in a store. In 1995, my family bought our first mac. I think my mom had used them a lot at work (biotech). In 2004, I bought a G4 AGP from an Australian for a case of lager. I also have an SE and an SE/30 that I found dumpster-diving.

This is my first mac - a 2 year old white macbook. Always had PCs before that, built my own, ran all sorts of OSs (linux distros, pretty much all of the Windows' since 3.1)... I went with linux as my desktop for several years before getting a MacBook as a gift.
I quite like OSX. It's basically a greatly polished up and usable version of what I was slowly building in linux environment. The actual macbook - the build quality is pretty mediocre, and plastic started to peel off after about 6-7 months (got to get that replaced...). It still runs like a champ, and stood up to lots of abuse and a very "active" lifestyle - it's always in my backpack, and I tend to bike/run/jump etc with it.
I'm looking at the new aluminum case MBP now, but also considering other hardware as well - not sure if I'm willing to support Apple further. It's a shame though, OSX is a great OS...
There's a reason Apple developed the unibody aluminum case. I've horribly mistreated my little 15" MacBook and haven't had a single issue. I'm not sure why it's so hard to source good plastic, but apparently the folks at Cupertino gave up, and I'm happy they did.
Never seem to have issues (such as plastic peeling off) with my thinkpads - so IBM/Lenovo must've found a good source, haven't they?

No, my first Mac was the original 128K Macintosh. That wasn't even my first Apple computer either--that award goes to my Apple II+ (both of which I still have, BTW). There have been quite a few other Macs along the way to my current one, a recent white MacBook.
uberamd 0 points1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]
My first real Mac was a MacBook I purchased in 2007. I bought it after I saw so many people using Macs around my college campus.
After I got my MacBook I realized that I would love the laptop even more with a larger screen, so I upgraded to a 15" MacBook Pro. That served me very well for over a year until I once again decided that I wanted a larger screen. In September I purchased a 17" uMBP, it is an amazing machine. It is powerful, thin, has a 1920x1200 display, and 1TB of storage (I removed my DVD drive).
I have a Lenovo too so I can do my 'PC' stuff without needing to haul around my 17" and run bootcamp.

Still on my first Mac from about a year ago. Don't know if I'll ever by another one due to the overpriced hardware (or maybe you're just paying more for the OS). I love the OS, but I think I'll probably buy another brand next time just avoid the price gouge. Hopefully I'll find something that I can make into a Hackintosh. I don't use it to record music or design anything so I wouldn't be missing much. I do love not having to worry as much about anti-virus protection and going through lengthy system scans.

I got my Macbook Air (1.8GHz non Nvidia with the 64GB SSD) as payment for services. I'm pretty happy with it, except it is slow when playing high-def youtube videos. The thing I like the most is SPACES! I like having all of my windows logically organized based on my needs.

iBook G4 1.3Mhz
Mac Pro Dual-Dual-Core 3.0

I should note that I had a number of PC's over the years, and I currently have 5 computers that I use (two are Fedora boxes and one Win7 computer for gaming).

Posting this from my new iMac which is the first Apple computer I've owned. I've been a "PC" person for years, but as a software developer have reached the point where the unix tooling in OS X just makes more sense. I also like the fact that this machine is a single discrete object that I can hand off to someone else if it breaks. I've tinkered with PC hardware for years but no longer have the time or inclination to do it any more.

Yes, and I love it. 2008 Apple iMac 20" (Radeon HD 2600). I'm aware that the video card is already ancient by 2009's standards but I can right now play StarCraft 2 Beta a little above Medium preset settings with 60 FPS. Boot Camping Windows 7 for gaming, and Snow Leopard for everything else. I could have easily gotten a PC with almost twice the specs for the same price and I would have regretted that.

The Mac I use is my first. It's off the first intel Core Duo line of MacBook Pro laptops. It's starting to get old but Apple still hasn't given me a reason to buy a new MBP. This has been the most reliable and pleasant experience I have ever had with a computer. Apple is going to really have to mess something up to scare me off.

I traded Mortal Kombat 2 for snes for my first Apple 2e waaaay back. And years later I threw down thousands on a Powermac G5 that was obsolete a month later ( Damn you Intel switch! ) and then a few months ago I got a mac mini.

Kind of... I bought my first non-hand-built PC in the fall of 2003. At this time, I was still a hardcore gamer but loved the powerbooks. I debated heavily between the 1.0Ghz TiBook with ATI 9000 and 1280x854 or (what I ended up getting) a Dell Inspiron 8500 with Geforce 4200 (vastly superior to the 9000) and 1920x1200. I wish I had gotten the TiBook, thank god I got the accidental damage warranty on the Dell. In the 6 years I used the Dell, I replaced: the motherboard twice, the DVDRW three times, two hard drives, the ram, two power bricks and had the screen hinge and power plug break in its final year.
Now I have a 13" unibody and love it. The construction quality is so much higher than that of my Dell. My only wish is that the screen resolution were higher. 1280x800 just doesn't cut it for me on a screen this size. 1440x900 or better yet, 1680x1050 OPTIONS would be a great thing.
EDIT: I forgot to mention I had a Power Mac G3 that I installed Yellow Dog on...

This is my first mac, a late 2007 model MacBook Pro. Before the factory 1 yr warranty expired, the video card died, the power adapter stopped working and they sent me the wrong part, even when I told AppleCare I needed the part with the power adapter attached and magsafe connector, NOT the three prong extension to the wall or the two prong adapter. The woman could have just been retarded or high; I'm over it. Next to go wrong was the keyboard and trackpad would stop working intermittently. Feeling more problems lie ahead, I bought the AppleCare extended plan for two more years of protection. The keyboard and trackpad finally quit working altogether and so I sent it off for the second time. They replaced the top case, so I got a new keyboard and trackpad and speaker grilles so everything feels new to type on again. Seven months later, the logic board (or motherboard) stopped working. Even with all of these problems, I LOVE my mac. All 3 times I shipped my computer off for repair, it was back in my hands in less than 45 hours. The repair center is in Houston, I live in Nashville. I've read in forums of some people's repairs taking much longer. The speedy service has upheld my opinion of apple. I will certainly buy another macbook pro; the 15.4 inch screen is the perfect size. I dislike the windows OS. I don't think I can ever go back.
