I figure that as a new (and free!) game, there'll be plenty of questions asked about the game. So how about a thread with some of the basic gameplay questions that we have, or figured out the answer to?

Melee is vastly underused by most players I see. You can kill the generic aliens with one hit if they're green, two if they're red. (On hard, at least.) Just right click as you're running toward them, right before you collide. When you're just dealing with bugs one at a time, it's a great way to save on ammo.
Edit: realized there's a bit more depth to melee. Look for a Melee Damage bonus on your character for extra fun. There's also an offhand item that grants a passive melee bonus, but it's pretty high level.

Also: for cripe's sake if there's an alien next to a teammate MELEE IT don't shoot it! People seem to think it's more effective to shotgun you in the face than melee.

I'll post first; there seem to be two 'hacking' games; one for doors (a connect-the-pipe puzzle), and a 'combination lock' system for consoles.
I couldn't work out an easy way to complete the combination lock. Is there a trick to it?

You have to align the 1's that scroll. The arrows on the bottom determine what direction to scroll, you click on them to change the direction. It's a bit weird to get the hang of.
The basic strategy of getting them aligned is to go with your biggest combination of 1s that are in the same direction, and then have all your other 1s go the other way until they align, at which point you click their arrows and have them join the group.

Yeah, it's quite badly designed: impenetrable for beginners, trivial once you grasp it. I hope they replace it, I like the pipe dream puzzle much more.

Does anyone know how, exactly, to 'fast hack' the door hack? do i have to finish the first part right when the white arrow reaches halfway(for two locks) or a third (for three locks)?

I believe the aim is to finish the hack before the little red arrow on the bar gets all the way to the right. If you hear a buzzer and see "hacking attempt logged," you've not done it.

Can someone explain reloading? What's the relevance of the little blip in the reloading bar? What are you meant to press to hit it?

If you've ever played Gears of War, its like the active reload. You press the reload key when the little moving bar is in the white box. If you are successful, then it finishes reloading there. If you miss it, then you 'jam' your gun and it takes a few extra seconds to finish reloading.

Wait, I thought if you hit the bar you get a quick reload. If it goes all the way(without you pressing R) you get a normal reload. If you hit R at the wrong spot, it jams. Although I never timed the jam to see if it took the same amount of time. I've been doing it wrong the whole time!?

Well, you're a casual gamer, and you can choose not to use it, and honestly there's absolutely nothing wrong with that and I'm sure you're enjoying yourself.
But: for some players, especially those trying to beat the game on the hardest skill level, perfectly timed active reloads will be one of the many techniques required for survival.
I'm somewhat disappointed that they don't have a gears-style perfect active reload scheme. You might think that these are hard, but after a game-full of hundreds of reloads, it's actually easier than it may seem.

I just wish the progress bar was larger. Playing on my high resolution it's a pain in the ass to look down at the little bar on the left-hand corner while I'm dodging the swarm.

Really? I found the quick reload to be too easy, except for when you completely empty your clip without realizing it, and you don't have your eyes on the gauge when your auto-reload starts.

Oh see that's where we differ, I always let my ammo empty naturally because I want to conserve it.
In general, that's a good strategy which I follow, but it's always smart to keep an eye on your ammo meter, and reload if your ammo is dangerously low. Nothing's worse that spinning up your minigun to take on a huge swarm, only to find out that you have one or two bullets left.

It's very worthwhile for slow-loading guns -- the autogun and the tesla rifle especially. For some of the quick-loading guns I think it would be a waste of time.

It's a Gears of War style quick reload option. If you hit R again while the line is in the highlighted blip, you reload at that point. If you miss it though, you jam the gun and it will take longer than if you had just let the reload finish normally.
In order to heal infection, have a medic heal you. If your medic is the girl she should be able to heal it with one medipack (if you're not being attacked otherwise). With the guy medic you'll need 2 or 3.
Of course, the best way to deal with infection is to not get infected at all. Have someone with a flamethrower or tesla take point...both of those weapons are excellent for clearing nests.

The guy medic doesn't have much going for him (unless you use adrenaline, but who does?) since the girl beats him in each primary medic role. If you only have one medic on the team it should definitely be the girl.

The guy medic is excellent as a jack-of-all-trades character. He can heal, he can fight using his nice damage bonuses, and his adrenaline is incredibly powerful and extremely useful in sticky situations.
In maps where infectious parasites are present, however, it's a good idea to have either the girl medic, or both medics.

Haven't tried healing infection with the med pack yet, but it eats through my medic gun ammo, need to heal the fuckers for like 10secs long.

Once you unlock it, the medigun seems to cure infection much faster, and also has a self-heal as its alt-fire.

I was playing a game with some random people. I saw one of them get infected and the other all started meleeing him, while i dropped a medpack. At the end of the game a pointed out that you only need to heal to get rid of the infection. They were like "yeah, we just thought it helps to bring it to your attention". The next level I got infected and two of the guys ran over and shot me in the face. I left the game after that.
If you're a Medic, how do you heal people?

Use the mousewheel to scroll between your weapons. Medics can equip healkits, which when thrown on the ground will provide area of effect healing for a few seconds. After you hit level 9, you unlock a medigun (like the TF2's medic). This has a beam you can shoot at your teammates to heal, or you can middle click to heal yourself. Just be careful with both of these since you can't resupply either during missions.

My main question is if the screen shaking increases depending on difficulty level? I wasn't sure if the game was messing up when everything went crazy in the middle of a firefight earlier.

If your screen starts shaking to the point where you literally can't see anything, and your perspective keeps changing, and it makes you want to puke, that's a glitch. I think it's caused by being hit by aliens while you're lagging out, but I'm not sure.

I believe that's caused by the small flying aliens crashing themselves into you. They become much easier to hit with flares or a weapon that has auto-target.

I already encountered someone who was level 15 already. I swear we have perma-noobs and perma-pro's. They are just so pro that they automatically level up a bunch of times when they play a totally new game.

It levels extremely quickly. At normal difficulty I was gaining a level and a half every mission until I quit at level 13.

I'm lvl 20 and a lot of people are even higher. Many of us played the first Alien Swarm, and the game play is a lot easier for us.
I'm already past first Promotion, and I've never played Alien Swarm before, although I have played a few similar top-down games. I've just been playing quite a lot, is all.

It isn't new at all.. just new to the sourceworks platform.
I played Alien Swarm built atop the unreal engine quite a few years ago (2004).
The flamethrower seems to be nearly absurdly effective. On common swarm and anything weaker it's a one-burst kill (or one-click). It doesn't kill them immediately, but it does incapacitate them, and kills within a second or two. It's also extremely good at covering halls and chokepoints. You'll get a bit more friendly fire than usual, but it seems to do much less damage to teammates than to the surprisingly inflammable aliens.
At what difficulty? On hard you can flame regular swarm for 3 seconds straight, and they might still live for a few seconds.
Ah, good point. I did the first few levels on hard, forgot the game I was in that went to the end was on normal. So, probably not as effective on harder difficulties. The friendly fire probably has a much larger effect, also.

Yep, definitely picked up that bit of information during the four or so levels of hard I played. I had one guy who did not seem to get the whole "don't shoot your team in the back of the head with a minigun" idea. Seems like a pretty basic safety protocol to me.

I agree, make sure that (after someone in your group has unlocked it) one person always has a flamethrower equipped. It's definitely a necessity for the last few levels where all the parasite nests are since it will instantly shut them down. The only problem is that the flamethrower is near-useless on the bigger enemies so you need some teammates with normal weapons. If you want a balanced mix, the tesla is almost as effective as the flamethrower at killing things, but useful on all enemies (since everything can be stunned, and it's super effective on the shield enemies).
The flamethrower sentry is even better! All the awesomeness of the flamethrower, with none of the friendly fire.

This is incorrect. The flame sentry will set friendlies on fire. Don't point it at your friends and don't walk in front of it when it's toasting bugs.

If you have your cursor directly over a enemy does it do more damage, or do the bullets just have to be flying in the right direction? Also what damage drop off like?

Your weapon does not do more damage if your cursor is directly over the enemy; the bullets just have to be flying in the right direction.
The one exception to this, as far as I'm aware, is the grenade launcher (not the assault rifle's secondary fire, but the grenade launcher that you acquire as your very last unlockable). The grenades from that will explode exactly where you click your mouse.
Not sure about damage drop off. I believe there is none, with the exception of shotguns? But I could be totally wrong about that.

You can pack up and re-deploy the sentry, but each action takes a few seconds and leaves you vulnerable. You can even pick up someone else's sentry, I think.

Yep. Just hold the 'e' key on top of it. If you just want to turn it, aim where it should point and tap 'e'.
