Hehe, I feel that SRS would be fucked if we were included on that list. It's much more cathartic to make a sarcastic neckbeard comment with lots of swearing and insults and internet slang than to write a treatise every time someone posts a racist and/or sexist comment.

That's actually one of my favourite things about this subreddit. For the most part there's no need to explain exactly why "faggot" is hurtful, or why men are not oppressed by some feminist conspiracy. Everyone gets it and the sarcastic comments are all that can really be said.

It's still pretty stupid to pretend things like "starting posts with capital letters" actually mean anything when you're trying to analyze the intelligence of a web community. The only people who obsess about proper grammar and spelling are stuck in Freshman English Hell and need to start reading the content and not the superfluous structure.

So then why did you bother using capitalization and punctuation? It clearly at least shows that the comment author took some time to think about and correctly format their post. He's not analyzing whether or not people are ending their sentences with prepositions, it's just a question of whether they followed the most basic of English rules.

I bothered because sometimes it's a reflexive habit to use proper rules of grammar, and sometimes I'm drunk. Little dots at the end of the thought are not actually an important or meaningful addition to how we communicate to each other.

I'd argue that their inclusion is a common courtesy, indicating that you're taking the discussion and each other seriously. Maybe it's selection bias, but I'd argue that in general, forums where everyone tends to try to write correctly tend to have a higher level of discourse than ones that don't care. Think about reading a discussion on TrueReddit vs., say, Yahoo Answers.

Yep, /r/Christianity has to balance many, many different Christian denominations and churches and their differing doctrines and ideas as well as the constant influx of atheists challenging/asking questions/trolling/etc. It makes for an interesting dynamic.

If only the rest of Reddit could be the same way.

The moderating is very hands off. The community generally deals with trolls in a mature and intelligent manner, so they tend to not get much traction.

Sometimes troll posts lead to great discussions in fact.

I'll read that later when I have time to actually process it. My thought is going to be that digg going away didn't reddit what it is today, the increase of users did. You can only stay a small insightful community for so long until the unwashed masses make you the average.
