Pack it in, pack it out.

The people posting in this thread are obviously outraged. Regretfully, I think it won't get to the people actually leaving the trash. I went up to see what was going on the other day. There was trash, but it didn't get bad until the snow plow came. People started turning over the trash cans in the street in front of it.

It was all fun and games until then. People were using the recycling bin, but there was definitely still trash around. Maybe the solution is there is no solution. Maybe it's getting enough people to call the couple of douches out. I don't quite know.

Nothing new here. Ever been to a Seahawks/Mariners game? Concerts?

If you get a bunch of people grouped up in one area drinking and having fun... The place is going to get trashed. It's not a sledder thing, it's not a Seattle thing, it's a people thing.

[–]BarbieDreamHearseUpwardly Mobile 9 points10 points ago

You're right, but sports and concerts take place in stadiums. People must buy tickets to enter the stadiums. Part of the price of the ticket pays stadium workers to clean up the mess when people leave. No one paid for the luxury of using the parks and roads as their own personal trash bins.

You could make the tax argument, I suppose. But if we don't want to live in a nanny state, we should be able to prove that we don't need a nanny to pick up after us.

[–]BackwerdsMan 6 points7 points ago

People who drop their trash on the ground don't care if they paid for a ticket or not.

Don't think I'm on their side, because I'm not. Its just that I'm not surprised by it at all. It's just what happens.

[–]AFuddyDuddy 1 point2 points ago

I've almost gotten into physical alterations over shit like this.. Minding my business.. Some asshat tosses garbage wantonly... Ask politely to pick up and dispose of properly (usually a trash can just feet away) and I usually get some Shitty insulting response.

Those people should be horsewhipped. And then made to clean up litter while being horsewhipped.

[–]Cho-Manno[S] 7 points8 points ago

Exactly right. I don't choose to live in a stadium. This is shared public space -- pack it in, pack it out.

Ive been tailgating near South Holgate Street since 2005, we dont leave trash behind. We might get drunk and beligerant, but we dont trash the place. If we and others left trash all over the place, the local companies that grant us permission to tailgate in their allyway or parking lot on Sundays, would ask us to leave.

Also, having worked many concerts in my 20s. You bring booze to a concert? Then im going to take it from you, tossed in the trash before you even get through the front door.

Having worked a few all-ages events, yeah you will see beer bottles or cans in the parking lot. This is due to underaged kids getting smashed before the event and have no respect for the property.

[–]BackwerdsMan -2 points-1 points ago

Cool... What's your point?

[–]spacem00se -1 points0 points ago

Point being, this is not a Seattle thing. Attempts to dismiss garbage on the sidewalks as something that happens during Seahawk or Mariner games or even rock concerts, is absolute BS. It gives guilty parties the ability to avoid blame (or even the responciblity of cleaning it up), by claiming everyone else does it.

[–]BackwerdsMan 2 points3 points ago

I'm not dismissing anything. I'm merely stating the realities, and why it doesn't surprise me. At no point did I say it's ok.

[–]spacem00se -5 points-4 points ago

Ok, not a problem. But I can honestly state that this sort of thing does not happen at Seahawk games. If you dont have your drink in a cup, the DUI police can arrest you for that. So littering the sidewalks with beer cans is something that does not occur.

[–]BackwerdsMan 3 points4 points ago

I was talking more about inside the stadium. There's garbage cans everywhere... But after the game, the stands are littered with garbage. I'm not trying to call out tailgaters.

[–]spacem00se -1 points0 points ago

Woah there, thats a really bad comparrison. The reason why they throw empty bottles and snack trays under the seat is because seats dont come with trash bins. Nobody expects you to get out of your seat and waste 10 minutes to properly dispose of it. The extra money you pay is to employ someone else to clean it up.

[–]Strobe74 11 points12 points ago

You think that's bad.. you should see their apartments!

[–]papadopolisGreen Lake 6 points7 points ago

"Beginning your title with "vote up if" is violation of intergalactic law."

on a technical basis yours starts with "please upvote" so you are in the clear.

and yea these people should have cleaned up after themselves. very disrespectful

[–]Wesa 8 points9 points ago

This happened back in the huge snowstorm of 2003. I lived right on Bellevue/Denny (the brick building across the street) and the sledders left trash everywhere. The sidewalks were covered, the streets and intersections of Bellevue/Denny and also Melrose?Denny had abandoned couches and mattresses from sledders. I went out at 2AM to start picking up trash and a few neighbors came out to help. It was horrible.

[–]londoniumCapitol Hill 1 point2 points ago

Howdy neighbor. How did you like those fireworks going off two nights ago?

[–]Wesa 0 points1 point ago

Fireworks?

[–]londoniumCapitol Hill 0 points1 point ago

I'm pretty sure that's what woke me up at 2AM.

[–]Wesa 0 points1 point ago

A few days ago? Where do you live? I'm not on Capitol Hill anymore.

[–]londoniumCapitol Hill 0 points1 point ago

oh! misread.

[–]Wesa 0 points1 point ago

:P No prob!

[–]carelessNorth Capitol Hill 0 points1 point ago

Y'know, it occurs to me that this is a problem that the user flair could've solved :-)

[–]londoniumCapitol Hill 0 points1 point ago

Flair applied!

[–]Apollinaire131Eastlake 0 points1 point ago

Was it slightly to the west? Some guy sledding down Lynn lit off a few on his way down, and his friend over on Roanoke set off a couple more as a diversion. Police came thinking it was gunshots, then left right away when they found out what it really was.

[–]Shaku 3 points4 points ago

This sucks, I know. And I don't condone it. But have you ever been to other large cities? Seattleites are WAY better with their litter than people in any other city I have spent time in. If this was taking place in Vegas, the last city I lived in, garbage would definitely NOT be in the garbage can to begin with, let alone filling the can to the brim before placing the extra around the can. It would be just dropped where the person finished it.

[–]ultrapampersJet City 5 points6 points ago

The evidence suggests Vitamin R is responsible.

[–]Cho-Manno[S] 8 points9 points ago

It's ridiculous. I can't imagine how these people were raised that they think this is acceptable civil behavior.

[–]Fishermansterminal 2 points3 points ago

[–]Bitter_IdealistBitter Lake -1 points0 points ago

I like how this video shows the dumbassery of the sledders going down the hill when there's a dumbass SUV driver trying to go up the hill. Dumbassery all around. Why would it be any surprise that they are also incapable of picking up after themselves?

[–]yachtsystems 2 points3 points ago

I am all for having fun. I agree though, pack it out. These are the reasons that so many "fun" things are no longer allowed/tolerated.

[–]PARSLEYsage 2 points3 points ago

It's at least by the trashcan, which is full to the top.

[–]CluckyBCapitol Hill 0 points1 point ago

Also, while it was cool when they were out there in the afternoon/evening having a good time when it turned to random drunken shouting in the streets at 2 AM it got rather annoying fast. Have fun sledding, just respect the people who actually live there by keeping the noise down at night and not leaving trash everywhere.

That being said, even if I agree with you I always downvote anything that sets "please upvote"

[–]Apollinaire131Eastlake 0 points1 point ago

The sledding party in Eastlake cleaned everything up on Lynn st. Too bad it didn't happen elsewhere :(

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points ago

It isn't the end of the fucking world, there were a lot of people having fun and there is a little bit of trash, get the stick out of your ass.

[–]bwtaha 2 points3 points ago

To be fair it looks to be more of an issue of not enough space for the trash. While taking your trash home would be the right idea, most people don't even have the foresight to bring a trash bag with them, and I don't blame them for this. There are the occasional assholes who just litter, and they should be drawn and quartered, but that is not the constructive way to go about things.

Example: I was on the bus a few weeks ago and this early 20s guy in the back was breaking up weed to roll a blunt. Being from the Midwest I was surprised by how brave he was to take such a risk, even in Seattle. I don't have a problem with cannabis, but I don't think one should publicly roll up, on a bus, where there are children. What really struck me and pissed me off as something that makes cannabis users look bad is that he proceeded to empty the tobacco onto the floor of the bus. I usually don't say anything when someone litters on the bus, but in this case I had thought of a constructive way to criticize his behavior with an added friendly suggestion. So I got his attention and said "Dude, you should save that tobacco, you can sell it to a homeless guy or something." He gave me a thoughtful and friendly smile and most likely brushed my suggestion off, but he'll remember it in a positive way instead of some asshole bitching at him for littering.

tl;dr Guy dumped his blunt guts on the floor of the bus, instead of criticizing him for littering I suggested he save and use what he had just wasted.

My point is people are people, and when I see an overflowing trash can I don't blame the people who didn't plan on having to lug their trash home.

Hand out some trash bags next time.

[–]Bitter_IdealistBitter Lake 0 points1 point ago

Sell it to a homeless guy?

[–]bwtaha 1 point2 points ago

Yea you know, tobacco, for cigarettes, which are much cheaper when hand rolled.

This particular kid probably spends a great deal of time in the 3rd and pike/pine area, where selling a ziplock bag of tobacco to a homeless guy for two bucks is as easy as buying a pack of D batteries from another for $1.

[–]spacem00se -3 points-2 points ago

Kinda funny how The Straner one day becomes enraged when the cops were closing down Queen Ann streets to sledding, even going so far to calling people to take back Denny Way!

Then the next day, complain about the trash leftover.

[–]Ahundred 3 points4 points ago

It's possible to be upset about a pattern of human behavior and not believe that the solution is to have police ban a yearly community activity.

That said, due to annoying drunkards I usually avoid Queen Anne Hill and Denny Hill for less frequented hills, and less steep ones.

[–]spacem00se -1 points0 points ago

Except its not a yearly activity because rarely does snow fall enough to stick to the ground to allow sledding and given how cars are still driving through the area (top or bottom of the hill) makes this event incredibly foolish.

When I grew up, we just hit the golf courses if we wanted to sled.

[–]Ahundred 2 points3 points ago

It is pretty amusing/scary watching people attempt to sled before the hill is actually closed to traffic.

[–]CluckyBCapitol Hill 1 point2 points ago

Isn't that the MO for The Stranger? "Woo Occupy Seattle!!!!!!!!" "Oh Wait! Occupy Seattle is making a mess of this city! Fuck em!" its whats bound to happen when you write a borderline tabloid newspaper on senstationalism and spur of the moment feelings.

[–]salmonhouse 3 points4 points ago

The Stranger has actually had a very consistent position on Occupy. They support the goals of the movement, but often criticize the tactics.
