They can do an uppercut as soon as they're out of block/hit stun and it will beat whatever normal you're doing. If they're mashing uppercut on your blockstrings, just stop and block. This is of course giving up pressure, but if you sense an uppercut coming, it's a free punish.

Even better, many people tend to sit there mashing uppercut while they're being hit, so that if their opponent doesnt combo into a knockdown they'll score a cheap hit. You can abuse the shit out of a player doing this by just stopping in the middle of a string of hits and blocking.

When you block the SRK, you can then punish them by doing focus attack into whatever (ultra, super,BnB,etc).

edit: seems I'm repeating what other people have said.

jab, jab, block

Punish

You're probably playing against players who mash uppercut while they're forced to block so as soon as one of your moves doesn't connect, their uppercut comes out. How do you counter it? If you see someone doing this, just walk up and throw down a few "safe moves", wait for the uppercut, block and punish.

I find that in this situation it is best to simply press all the buttons at once. Works everytime.

short, easy, and "somewhat" damaging combos are the key thing for online play... just a or xx Tornado or Ruffian will make it harder for them to mash something out because that combo is easy to do so they won't get a chance to mash... or you can just bait them like Sleep and Stefan said.. just a couple Light punches then stop or walk back.. if that uppercut then its a free combo or ultra.. if they tatsu just croutch and press Fierce Punch and if they tiger knee if ONLY the second hit connects (since it's a two hit move) then sagat is safe but if its any other way then sagat is unsafe which leads to a free combo or ultra if timed correctly

Use Cody's zonk punch against projectiles. It's like magic!

Know the difference between tight and loose block strings.

Tight block strings put your opponent in a full blockstun state.

Loose blockstrings have gaps for reversals and button presses.

Depending on your opponent's tendencies, you wanna vary your strings.

Thanks everyone, I guess I need to be a little bit more patient with my combos when I know they can possibly uppercut, there were generally uppercutting inbetween my two light jabs so yeah, I guess I need to jab jab then block and punish if I think they're gonna do that. I also need to learn what moves are safe and what aren't like the tiger knee. Damn Sagat :P I also need to learn the safety of my own strings tbh, one step at a time. :D

It they are uppercutting between your jabs then that means that you are not spacing your jabs too far. Just cancel them into each other and you should be fine.

[–]GWAMM[S] 0 points1 point ago

How exactly do you cancel them into each other? I'm still pretty nooby.

Press them back to back.

I'd say if you really want to get good at this game then don't immediately start cramming out online ranked matches.

I played for a really long time in training room and against hardest cpu (though I never exploited things like winning rounds by just 3rd level focusing them or making them do punishable moves like they are programmed to) and reading about game mechanics. I got comfortable with cross ups, zoning, spacing (for Ryu who is my main), fadcing and a little bit of hit confirming and safe blockstrings (cpu usually always punishes a lose block string - it is just like mashing out an upper cut).

Once I got these basics down (and I already had an idea of baiting and other techniques for human vs human by watching youtube videos) I realized I could beat people with 3K+ BP on their main.

In the end this is one of those games that you really need to invest time in to enjoy. It took me forever to realize that I should not always hold back but also move forward and focus forward and then hold back at the last moment to block. It also took me forever to realize the situational use of the various buttons for jump in attacks (before that it was just jump in with HK for me). These are things you figure out yourself if you are careful enough.

have fun!

Yeah, thanks for the help. I feel overwhelmed with the information sometimes and feel like I'm learning the wrong things or not learning the right things.. then you have to be able to actually do them. It does take time, I'm not looking to be pro but I want to be at least comfortable in knowing what to do in pretty much every situation and being able to execute it.

[–]GWAMM[S] 0 points1 point ago*

Well now it seems I get owned by T.Hawks mashing throws inbetween my combos and then ultraing me when I get up, how do I deal with THAT? Online makes me mad. I always seem to do quite abit of work and get them to low health, then somehow they come back in some stupid way and beat me.

[–]SleepingpeonXBL: Casual McScrub 1 point2 points ago

You can neutral jump over grabs and punish if their grab whiffs. You can also back dash a command grab.

[–]GWAMM[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah, I should try that more often. Sometimes it just felt like I was getting grabbed no matter what. Thank you.

The thing about random shoryukens is, one blocked ones often gives you the opportunity to throw out an ultra or a powerful combo. If they're spamming shoryukens and not as anti airs, then simply bait them, block and punish.

You're really the one with the advantage, they would have to hit you with a handful of shoryukens to do any where near the damage of your ultra punish. So essentially they're helping you beat them up.
