We see this type of post every week (just like all the radiohead and Pink Floyd ;)) and we're tired of it too. We've tried to encourage discussion and news but in the end you guys decide what is posted and upvoted. This is a general music subreddit, and if you guys upvote radiohead and Pink Floyd, then what are we supposed to do? We can't ban certain bands or make this a "news only" subreddit. We do advertise other music subreddits, so feel free to unsubscribe and move to something that you enjoy.

Edit: If you normally like the stuff posted to /r/Music, but you're tired of certain bands, download RES, and use the filteReddit option to filter out those bands. You can also use it to filter out YouTube links if you only want to see news/discussion.

[–]timbreandsteel 65 points66 points ago

It's like the concert scene in a way. The indie bands that aren't yet popular play smaller clubs (frontpage on the smaller subreddits) and the arena fillers with thousands and thousands of fans dominate /r/music. Sure, there are a lot of people that don't like U2, Radiohead or whatnot but their concerts still sell out, and the same people are going to upvote them on here. I don't get why people have a problem with this. Everyone wants /r/music customized to their own taste, but that is just not going to happen.

[–]RaerthRaerth[M] 121 points122 points ago*

There is one way to customize to your personal taste.

  1. Go to the list of subreddits.
  2. Find the subreddits you like.
  3. Create a multireddit of those subreddits: /r/swinghouse+deathmetal+musicnews+frisson+guitar
  4. Bookmark this multireddit, or use RES to add it to the subreddit list.
  5. Teach squirrels to rob banks.
  6. Profit.

[–]mootmath 43 points44 points ago

I keep getting stuck on step 5... Help?

[–]itsaliemindmanifest 9 points10 points ago

How I didn't figure this out till now, I don't know. Thanks a lot! I won't unsubscribe from music, because classics are classics for a reason, but this will certainly help me with new music, so again thanks!

[–]silentseba 9 points10 points ago

How I didn't figure this out till now, I don't know. Thanks a lot! I won't unsubscribe from music, because squirrels can rob banks for a reason, but this will certainly help me buy new music, so again thanks!

[–]P2000Camaro 4 points5 points ago

I've seen this post countless times too. I started posting really good local bands from my area, and lesser known songs from popular bands quite a while ago. They just get ignored or downvoted. So while this subreddit claims to want new and more obscure music, they'll still continue to upvote the shit they know.. :(

[–]buffalochickentits 0 points1 point ago

This. I hate this.

[–]little-bird 2 points3 points ago

post them in r/listentothis and I'm sure you'll get a better reaction

[–]psychonavigator 6 points7 points ago

Keep doing what you're doing because you have the right idea. Thing is that overmoderation will kill this subreddit way faster than people posting music videos they love on here.

It's a shame they get downvoted and ignored so quickly (I'm looking at you, random redditor who downvoted my awesome submission today before it had a chance to shine, DAMN YOU!) because there really is a lot of great stuff.

IDGAF about people circlejerking over what's popular, music has always been like that.

Don't change shit, dissenters will dissent and people will keep posting and sharing stuff. This is a subreddit of extraordinary magnitude.

You have my gratitude.

[–]freakwent 1 point2 points ago

But pf don't relase any more material. Everyone knows this. There's no "discovery", you just go and buy it, and dig it, and wish you'd been there and move on.

I've been floyding for twenty years, and I'm surprised they get significant traction on reddit -- even I think they are dated, and I've got 14 T-shirts.

[–]IjustlostmyjengajamBeauxjangles 24 points25 points ago

This will only happen if all 43 of you who've upvoted so far actually start submitting lesser known stuff and upvoting things you find interesting.

[–]sponto_prontotaftie12 50 points51 points ago

come on over to /r/LetsTalkMusic

few users compared to /r/music, but a much better subreddit in general.

[–]michaeldavidwatson[S] 0 points1 point ago

I've never been there before but I just subscribed, thanks for this.

[–]Orbitrix 9 points10 points ago*

Not to rub it in but yea. Reddit is HUGE. If a subreddit like /r/music doesn't ever meet your fancy, chances are there are 10 other subreddits that fill the niche you are looking for. Just search the subreddits.

Also: Dont like the way /r/music or even /r/LetsTalkMusic works? Make your own subreddit and set the rules yourself. Its free and easy.

I personally like the way /r/music is, and I go to other subreddits specific to my genre tastes to find new artists like /r/idm or /r/electronicmusic so you might try finding a subredit specific to your preferred tastes if you're looking for "up and comers"

[–]fhite_n_derdy 54 points55 points ago

/r/listentothis, bud. And if /r/music gets to be too much of a drag, remember: there's no shame in unsubscribing. If you need a break or an extended vacation, no one will be the wiser.

[–]FlonnezillaKillaB-zilla 10 points11 points ago

/r/listentothis is great but it's not a complete replacement for /r/music, considering that there's no news or discussion threads.

[–]kukamunga 6 points7 points ago

was going to suggest r/listentothis. From the sidebar:

New, rare and old bands, artists, tracks or collaborations. Bringing the often unheard and neglected to new ears.

[–][deleted] 131 points132 points ago

You forgot the Black Keys, the Beatles, RUSH, Radiohead, Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, New Order, and Explosions in the Sky.

It's like a broken record, I swear.

[–]werocknone 30 points31 points ago

Lest we forget Tool and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

[–]Secret_Boner 68 points69 points ago

Let's not forget

What's your favorite cover song?

What cover song do you think is better than the original?

What headphones should I buy?

If you could have one song played at your funeral what would it be?

What song makes you sad?

DAE think <super famous band/album> is underrated / overrated?

[–]mixmasterteapotmixmasterteapot 26 points27 points ago

Some of these are okay posts, because they may have a different audience than before. That's why repeat questions are allowed on AskReddit, different audiences and different answers.

[–]Counterman 4 points5 points ago

Yes. If you want to talk with people about a band you think is overrated/underrated, you don't dig up a two months old thread to do it - no one will see what you post there, or discuss with you.

/r/music is one of the few big subreddits that really gets it when it comes to light moderation.

[–]Detrituss 5 points6 points ago

What headphones should I buy?

I agree with all, but this I agree with the most. There are always 6 different recommendations, the person asking usually buys none of the suggestions. Same in /audio /audiophile, except on the many times where they might have, but they just vanish without a trace.

I think I'll unsubscribe, since I already have headphones I like and know about Explosions in the Sky and Modest Mouse.

[–]GravityGod 1 point2 points ago

Might be worth making a Link in the sidebar for 'What headphones should I buy'

[–]mgh245 39 points40 points ago

I for on like the circlejerk. But I also love the new stuff I find over in /r/ListenToThis.

[–]slowhand88 5 points6 points ago

I bought a broken Explosions in the Sky record once. Came with 2 copies of the 2nd LP. I was all "whaaa?".

Interpunk sent me a new copy pretty quick though, they good people.

[–]IjustlostmyjengajamBeauxjangles 11 points12 points ago

Muse

[–]Willravel 14 points15 points ago

People post Coldplay? Really?

[–]vidiotsavant 22 points23 points ago

oh come now, 'rush of the blood to the head' was pretty f'ing good for it's day.

[–]whatisBoxhappening 12 points13 points ago

honestly i think their 1st album (Parachutes) was their best. unfortunately, they just completely lost me after that.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

No, he was facetiously trying to make a point.

[–]freef 8 points9 points ago

There's a bathroom for that.

[–]bussses 13 points14 points ago*

"Hey guys have you heard this not-quite-top-40 but still very popular and overplayed song? Me too! We have such advanced musical taste."

/every post in this subreddit

Seriously guys, listening to the Black Keys and Kings of Leon doesn't mean you have hip taste in music, it just means you like pretending you do.

[–]oblivious_oblivion 6 points7 points ago

I'm rather new here. Is it "wrong" to say I don't give a shit about either of those bands? Why did rock lose its edge, and give way to effeminate hipster dreck?

Yeah, yeah. Get off my lawn.

[–]katie3324 15 points16 points ago

It just means you like good music and don't mind if other people like it too.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points ago

xmfd@ the black keys being good

[–]michaeldavidwatson[S] -1 points0 points ago

[–]Furkel_BandanawichFUCKYOU 361 points362 points ago

I'm upvoting you because I honestly believe this subreddit needs to be constantly reminded that it is turned into a wasteland of musical circlejerk. On the other hand, it's been like this for almost as long as I can remember, and you're probably better off subscribing to more specialized music subreddit.

Honstely, I think the reddit music community would be better off if this subreddit was just shut down completely. /r/music is a total piece of shit.

[–]glorious_bastard 131 points132 points ago

Kind of hard to have quality posts with such a broad subject and 500k users that just like "music"...head into specific subreddits for what you want to hear.

[–]Poydflink 28 points29 points ago*

How about you guys join the awesome alternatives /r/newmusic (for new music only) and /r/letstalkmusic (for discussions only)? These are great subreddits who just need more viewers to become even better.

Edit: /r/newmusic is for recent music only- not just for new bands as original stated. The bands may be old, if it's new material, it belongs there.

[–]secretchimp 20 points21 points ago*

I honestly don't think sharing music works in a points-based site like this. It's going to devolve into gimme-gimme shitty link recycling no matter what.

[–]dumaseunderdog000 20 points21 points ago

(...)you're probably better off subscribing to more specialized music subreddit.

Eh, not even. If you go to /r/indierock you'll just see posts like "Does anyone else like Arcade Fire"?

There's really no escape.

[–]blue_strat 5 points6 points ago

So head to /r/indiewok.

[–]autodidact89 106 points107 points ago

Popular bands get the most upvotes, thus ending up on the front page of the subreddit? Well I'll fucking be.

Allow me to introduce you and OP to /r/music/new.

[–]zjbird 14 points15 points ago

Couldn't have put it better myself, but I still support the upvoting of complaint posts like this. They have a good record of temporarily fixing subreddit's front page. It's like giving the subreddit a few pills and seeing how far they get.

[–]MadWorldByGaryJules 13 points14 points ago

Uh of course it's a wasteland. It's a default subreddit.

[–]AnArtistForPretend 21 points22 points ago

NOOOOO! Then everyone would flood /r/listentothis! The circlejerk exists to keep the masses away!

[–]AegisXLII 7 points8 points ago

shhhhh!

[–]Phallic 3 points4 points ago

r/LTT is seriously one of my top subreddits. SO much good music on there, and it's small enough that there's no bullshit/trolling/circlejerking.

This is my latest favourite find from there:

Made In Heights - Skylark Interrobang

[–]Esteamesteam886 7 points8 points ago

Tell it how it is, Furkel.

[–]Furkel_BandanawichFUCKYOU 8 points9 points ago

That's MR. Bandanawich to you.

[–]Esteamesteam886 7 points8 points ago

I am, dearly sorry.

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points ago

My only problem is how much everyone on this subreddit just loves to hate music. Oh that band has a hint of Indie sound in them but they're played on the radio? What a Pop-manufactured piece of shit, God forbid any of my cool friends find out I like them.

Hating music is pointless and doesn't get anyone anywhere, music is music, regardless of the artists' influences or talents, music is music. Enjoy it, sure the lyrics may not be too smart, the singer may use an effect here or there, who the fuck cares? Enjoy it.

[–]Kombat_Wombat 7 points8 points ago

Someone in this thread was ripping on the new gotye song. I wouldn't have found it if it werent for /r/music, and it's a pretty great song to me.

I don't know why there are all these music snobs. Anyone with a real spirit for music or, lets be honest, any actual chops would participate in this hate parade.

[–]CanIGetaHellYeah 13 points14 points ago

This will probably just get downvoted into oblivion

I play a reddit game whereby if you say this, you are downvoted.

[–]acelluloidacelluloid 8 points9 points ago

r/listentothis is pretty decent. Although if you are there for a time you do see some songs make pretty steady rotations on the front page but it still is streets ahead or r/music.

[–]timbreandsteel 0 points1 point ago

but it still is streets ahead

Streets ahead... that's pretty fetch!

[–]SushiGradeNarwhal 15 points16 points ago

I completely agree, I liked this subreddit at first, but now I rarely come here, and when I do it isn't for long.

[–]Trent1373 5 points6 points ago

I agree, if I post something in this subreddit that isn't popular I automatically get downvoted within the first few seconds.

[–]OsamaBongLoadin 12 points13 points ago

well there are almost 550k subscribers, you get that many people together of course most of them are gonna be philistines, don't act surprised

also, threads like this complaining about how much /r/music sucks pop up on a weekly basis as well, it's a neverending cycle

the obvious solution is to downvote everything

[–][deleted] ago

[deleted]

[–]michaeldavidwatson[S] 2 points3 points ago

I'm not trying to shut it down, not at all. If you read again, I actually want this subreddit to be more about guys/gals like yourself where you can let us know what you're all about and get feedback. But if r/music is too busy with the Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead, etc. circlejerk you could just get buried by all that stuff.

[–]working_on_it 4 points5 points ago

/r/indiewok

It's "unheard of" music, like /r/listentothis, but more undiscovered... Not active enough, but at least that keeps everything pretty unheard of, as you seem to be pining for.

[–]atillathehunniee 17 points18 points ago

I feel the same way. which is why I downvote all classic rock, radiohead, modest mouse, any obvious karma whore post, and that awful gotye song. seriously, we get it. it's a new "cool" song and kimbra has a good voice. but stop fucking posting it every other day.

[–]michaeldavidwatson[S] 4 points5 points ago

Exactly. It's not that I don't like the music (I like most of the circlejerk bands), it's just that we already know who Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, Arctic Monkeys. Give it a rest.

[–]atillathehunniee 9 points10 points ago

Sometimes I feel bad downvoting songs/bands I like, but I hate it when people post a video with, "Hey reddit, there's a band called Muse I like. Any love for it?" Do a simple search. Yes, a lot of us like Muse.

[–]epidemic44 8 points9 points ago

Not everybody knows. There are people today, after the superbowl halftime show who are claiming that Madonna is a Lady Gaga rip-off. You and I might know who Pink Floyd is, but there is a kid on reddit who might not, and a post here could introduce them to the music. Maybe they here "Time" from the Darkside record and do a search that leads them to "Piper at The Gates Of Dawn". That shit changed my life when I was 14 or 15. I wish I could remember the year but I ended up doing a lot of psychedelics that changed my entire view on the world. And, maybe screwed with my memory a little.

[–]night_owl 2 points3 points ago

At what point do we draw the line when deciding the lowest common denominator?

Yes, there could be some 5th graders on reddit who honestly don't know who Madonna really is, but is that the standard we are going to set? Is the focus of this reddit on total music discovery for any and every audience? Appealing to the lowest common denominator is recipe for seriously devolving this subreddit even worse than it already is....

[–]Dongopolis 12 points13 points ago

HEY I LIKE THIS MODERATELY POPULAR ALTERNATIVE/INDIE/ROCK BAND ARENT I AN UNIQUE FLOWER??

[–]danosaur 2 points3 points ago

Haha there was some dude on here the other week saying that "None of my friends understand me cos I'm 19 and listen to Pink Floyd and Rolling Stones, why am I such weirdo with these amazingly eclectic tastes that no one else can ever understand?!"...
I didn't know whether I wanted to punch the guy or feel sorry for him.

[–]owenstumor 2 points3 points ago

I would tend to agree. That's why I spend time in r/Music/new/.

I've found lots of stuff there that I'd never heard before. Really good stuff. Stuff like this.

[–]sidevotesareupvotes 1 point2 points ago*

That's the nature of the upvote system. Most people aren't going to go to new and listen to everything and judge it by its own merits. In fact, most people don't even judge music by its own merits but instead its popularity (imo Beatles is a great example). I just uploaded this house anthem. Found out about it while listening to this set.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

protip: not everyone knows everything, nor do they learn it at the same time

[–]CornFedHonky 1 point2 points ago

So maybe instead of making posts complaining about the state of things ....you should post some music? That's how the site works you know, you post it and others see it. I'm growing tired of this subreddit because I keep seeing posts bitching about people posting music to the music subreddit.

[–]Myker 24 points25 points ago

r/Music isn't just for "new" "indie" or "hipster" music. Granted, those genres may interest a lot of people, but they are not for everyone. r/Music is for sharing music that you like with others, whether it's rap, rock, folk, kpop, or anything under the sun. If you're looking for something specific, perhaps this just isn't the subreddit for you. Maybe r/indie and it's derivatives would suit your tastes better? Did you ever think that maybe the music that is posted here is popular because a large amount of people like to listen to it?

I can understand your yearning for new music, but I have already been introduced to a number of new bands through this subreddit and I've also remembered a number of old favorites. Again, I will restate that you might want to consider looking elsewhere for something that satisfies your needs.

Perhaps consider creating "r/MusicNews"?

[–]IjustlostmyjengajamBeauxjangles 8 points9 points ago

I really really hate the dichotomy of "mainstream" music versus "hipster/indie" music. The reality is that the vast majority of artists out there aren't super well known, and if you enjoy discovering new music your tastes will probably eventually lead to artists who are less known, but shouldn't be passed up just because they're "indie."

[–]michaeldavidwatson[S] 3 points4 points ago

I never said Indie or Hipster music, there is plenty of lesser known rap, folk, rock, electronic, blah blah blah. I have other sources for music news, but I think r/music would be a great music forum with 500,000+ subscribing. I'm just tired of seeing the same 10-15 bands over and over. I love all of them, but I feel like everyone has heard of them.

[–]thedavidcarneydvgmusic 2 points3 points ago

I love finding new music, but that's isn't the sole purpose of listening to music. I totally agree with your post in that I'd like it to be different, but I don't see anything wrong with people upvoting things they like. I tend to go to /r/music when I want to find something more mainstream.

Like everyone else beat me to saying, there are a ton of subreddits that have more specific uses. /r/listentothis is dedicated to sharing and finding "unheard" artists. If that's what you are looking for in a music reddit, try it out!

[–]SonOfSatan 8 points9 points ago

I agree with you. But I downvoted because you whined about being downvoted before anything even happened. Fuck you.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points ago

This will always happen. There are over 541,000 redditors subscribed to this subreddit. There is at least one person out there who hasn't heard of Pink Floyd, Modest Mouse, Gorillaz, etc. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.

You have to move to smaller subreddits that are more finely-tuned to meet your needs. It's not the subreddit's fault that you can't be objective and understand that not everyone has had the same musical experiences.

[–]m_bird13 2 points3 points ago

i agree and i wish this would happen but time and time again its a circle jerk for music that was great in the past no matter what. tis why r/listen to this is one of my fav subreddits, so fresh, so clean. http://www.reddit.com/r/listentothis/

[–]VideoGameMusic 6 points7 points ago

Doesn't Pitchfork have a forums section?

[–]speedster217 0 points1 point ago

Thank you! The other day there were 3 Smashing Pumpkins songs on the front page. Yes we get it, they're great. Now can people actually post obscure bands that I've never heard of before?

[–]M1st3rmarbl3selee88 2 points3 points ago

i'm pretty sure lesser known bands go to /r/listentothis. If you're mad about this subreddit go elsewhere and find new music. The subreddit gets complaints like this all the time, I just come to accept it and I go elsewhere for my musical quests. Nonetheless, I like to comeback here and circlejerk my brain every once in while.

[–]MikeOnFire 1 point2 points ago

Here. Maybe some Chuck Prophet will make you feel better.

Yet, when posting something new you get downvoted out of existence.

[–]pbrand 2 points3 points ago

Yup, /r/gaming is the same shit with about double the members. "Has anyone heard of this really obscure 90s game? posts Super Mario".

I unsubscribed from that and subscribed to /r/games and /r/truegaming. Suddenly, life is much better. If you can found a successful subsubreddit (perhaps one musical genre) and ask /r/music to link to it on the sidebar, like /r/gaming did to those two subreddits I mentioned above, you might find what you're looking for.

[–]psaxno 1 point2 points ago

dude, you just made me realize i was hiding all the /r/music posts and i just unsubscribed from this shitty subreddit. thanks for the intervention.

But why? Why can't we just discuss music we like in a MUSIC forum.

[–]cratylus 1 point2 points ago

[–]GZerv 2 points3 points ago

If you're looking for new bands I would recommend r/listentothis.

The other problem is that everyone likes to complain about this but not actually contribute.

[–]Misanthropologist 1 point2 points ago

Maybe you should unsubscribe and spend more time reading music blogs.

I got sick of r/movies and took it off my front page, best unsubscribe since r/politics.

[–]Ithinkthere4Ibooze 1 point2 points ago

I posted a link to my cousin who is a rapper on this subreddit---and he got really no love. I'll try again here, I'm not really into rap, but I think his stuff is actually pretty decent and catchy: Short Style & Breeze - Trying to Have Things

[–]boogerbrain 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, how about you post a link to your favorite local musician, someone you know personally

[–]MrSlimeKing 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I definitely noticed this, I been browsing Reddit for almost 2 years now, and just recently got pretty into /r/Music, and have been a little underwhelmed by it. Everything on the front of it is just songs that I already know. This should be a place of discovery for Redditors. Good post OP

[–]KX71 1 point2 points ago

If you like funk/jam/electrionica you should really check out IndigoSun, they're a local Chicago group that really blows my mind. This is a studio album they did they also have a good amount of live shows on archive.org too. Here's their facebook I just feel like they're great band and really should be heard.

[–]roadie_girl 0 points1 point ago

It truly is a bummer. I thought this subreddit was a place where not only could I learn about new music, but where I could share "un-popular" music with people. Unfortunately anytime I've posted a tune here, I don't think anyone has taken a minute to listen to it.

[–]plastic_vikingDanny_Austin 2 points3 points ago

I was hating on the state of /r/music before it was cool!

[–]SamuraiDreams 2 points3 points ago

Just come to /mu/, we're all dicks but it's easier to have a decent music conversation there.

[–]distortedtheory 1 point2 points ago*

Related: is there a music news subreddit?

edit: /r/Musicnews, frontpage it if you like.

[–]Evenidontkno 0 points1 point ago

[–]gaspah 1 point2 points ago

wth? I thought I unsubscribed from this subreddit already... oh well that little button is just there.. click..

[–]mramigofosho -1 points0 points ago

The problem with r/music is that they shoot down things that are truly exceptional just because they don't already know it when they see it. In my opinion, an instrument as beautiful as a hang drum deserves more upvotes than broken songs that everyone already knows. This subreddit isn't about agreeing with bands that you like, its supposed to be about finding new, original, and interesting music to listen to.

[–]SoarinPastTheMoon -1 points0 points ago

I'm also annoyed that redditors frequently downvote music they personally don't like. It's a circlejerk for the same songs.

[–]choddos 0 points1 point ago

What do you propose we do? Spreading the word to upvote the lesser known songs? They are there, but they don't get upvotes, it's natural that we're going to upvote amazing songs because it appeases all of our specific tastes. I suggest surfing on "new" rather than "what's hot".

Is Yellowcard considered well known? Because after Ocean Avenue, I think they've faded out for the majority, but not for the diehard fans like me :)

[–]Michel_LeGrisbi 1 point2 points ago

Is there a subreddit for just new music, say just stuff released within the last 3 years?

[–]dr3i 0 points1 point ago

Here, check out my friend's band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZTFeVnn_zk

[–]illwritethisonedown 0 points1 point ago

I haven't yet checked out music on reddit. But if it is indeed in a poor state of repair, I will certainly start posting some tunes. Cheers bro, upvote for sure.

[–]Mpls_Saint 0 points1 point ago

[–]the0jakester 0 points1 point ago

Ivory and Ash..... Damn good songs, from my sisters friend that has a band. The damn guy has a Black viking beard with a massive build, and has an awesome personality. Juz sayin... I haven't ever been to this subreddit, but i thought i might mention it. Maybe atleast one person will actulally google them.

[–]TheNinjaBacon 0 points1 point ago

If you are looking for a band that is not well known you should check these guys out.

The Victor Ship http://www.facebook.com/thevictorship?sk=app_178091127385

They kind of sound like Karnivool but definitely a different style.

[–]Zarathustraa 0 points1 point ago

the point of talking about those great bands isn't to just "agree that they are good", but it's to discuss how we can find new ways of appreciating them despite their existing position as a great band

everyone still talking about Vincent van Gogh today similarly is not just agreeing that he is good

great artists wouldn't be great artists if all people can get out of them is simply to agree that they are good

[–]ponolan1981 0 points1 point ago

[–]RagingRetard 0 points1 point ago

I don't understand, this subreddit used to be like the tropy sub of every musical redditor. 'Let's go to r/music and have a good time!'

And then it gets bigger and all of the sudden, 'blah blah blah retards coming in.' It's inevitable. Every subreddit will get bigger over time, and then everyone will hate it.

[–]baalsitch 1 point2 points ago

because Karma whoring. They need to stop that shit.

[–]gojirAwr 0 points1 point ago

Let's not forget, any mention of ELO - Mr. Blue Sky = karma.

[–]skottfree -1 points0 points ago

Brilliant

[–]gladvillain 1 point2 points ago

But without this subreddit, how would I be reminded daily of this fresh new song called "Somebody I Used to Know" by some crazy Australian guy named Gotye!?

[–]zfusfeldPandora name 0 points1 point ago

I posted something the other day that probably nobody has heard of, a band called The Glorious Veins, and I don't think anybody even looked at it. It's not that people don't post these things, it's that they don't get seen.

[–]ducky-box 0 points1 point ago

I agree. I keep seeing songs I already know, they're good, but posting new, awesome and/or obscure stuff would be better. I tried to post an awesome song from a 70s album but instantly was downvoted into oblivion.

[–]unimaginative_ID 1 point2 points ago

go on r/listentothis. its pretty small now, but it's slowly growing.

[–]boredjesse 1 point2 points ago

Because it sucks and people ran out of meaningful self posts a while ago. It's basically just a circle jerk of music that everyone already knows and likes anyway.

[–]Qwestop 0 points1 point ago

Reddit jumped the shark.

Especially with the woody interview this weekend. It'll just remain a fringe website

[–]itsridicuuulous 1 point2 points ago

Amsterdam and Cigarettes - Switzerland

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G_LAkScnZQg

[–]Beznet 1 point2 points ago

well, this is sort of a generic subreddit for music (obviously). So it will draw a larger crowd who is drawn to generic/everyday music.

[–]SmudgeBaron -1 points0 points ago

I'm not an audibly driven person and I have never visited this sub, but I will upvote this type of thinking all day long. Posting something that everyone already agrees is great, is just a circle jerk, and I'm betting there's probably already a sub for that.

[–]Meathampermichaelleung 0 points1 point ago

You should probably be in the less subscribed music subreddits, because those are the ones where you're bound to find the undiscovered. /r/music really isn't the place for that.

[–]the_chaz_experience 0 points1 point ago

Here is a great band by the name of Walter Mitty and His Makeshift Orchestra..free listen here.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

/r/listentothis has some good new stuff

[–]lemonyellowblack 0 points1 point ago

Here are some lesser none bands for you: Jets to Brazil, Bomb The Music Industry!, Laura Stevenson And The Cans, and Bad Astronaut. Some are decently known, but not widely known.

This isn't meant to be like a hope-you're-satisfied-now-shut-up comment. I just figured I'd help get this started.

[–]redbluemangle 0 points1 point ago

You just gotta respect your ears man. You can't expect anyone but a true musician to respect your ears more than you do. Obviously no subreddit will be able to offer this kind of treatment.

[–]jewunitjewyouknit 1 point2 points ago

Don't forget to include the stereotypical "There are too many YouTube links to popular bands" posts that come up about once every three days. Welcome to Reddit, anything with a significant subscriber base panders to the "lowest common denominator" because of the way the upvote/downvote system works. Explore more in-depth subreddits and you'll find some awesome stuff if that's what you're looking for.

[–]fluffkomix 0 points1 point ago

As of reading this i have now decided to take it upon myself to post all of the more obscure music i have on me

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Its like one big circlejerk in here.

[–]RudeAudio 0 points1 point ago

i fuckin agree wholeheartedly

[–]Brownrainboze 0 points1 point ago*

You'll never read this, but one of the greatest unknown bands of all time is Rasputin's Secret Police. It's baffling how amazing they are and how unknown they are t the same time.

[–]paniq 1 point2 points ago

Probably because the subreddit's title isn't priming the audience for the kind of vote you (and me) want. I propose /r/raremusic.

[–]thbt101 1 point2 points ago

So true. I posted the same thing a while back. I would love it if /r/music was a place to discover new or obscure great music, but I don't think I've ever seen a song or video make it to the home page that wasn't from a band that hasn't been played on the radio countless times.

Honestly, I think there's little chance anything will change.

[–]diablo75 1 point2 points ago

What's a good subreddit for "nobody" musicians to post links to their own stuff?

[–]BoonePickens 0 points1 point ago

im new, my bad.

Guilty.

Heres this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpUXrDrUfDM

Its probably already here, but if you dont know "wicked twisted road" you had ought to look into it.

...yep

[–]jyapman 1 point2 points ago

i posted earlyrise but that was rejected :(

[–]TentacleFace 1 point2 points ago

Wait wait wait cmon guys Lana Del Rey is totally awesome and totally didnt deserve the hate she got for being a shitty performer/popstar/piece of cardboard.

[–]TyRobot 1 point2 points ago

If I could upvote two musicians to the front page, it would be Ty Segall and Reggie Watts.

[–]kmizuno 0 points1 point ago

Tallest Man on Earth - Burden of Tomorrow

[–]pclamerpclamer 0 points1 point ago

Agreed. Please stop posting songs by Brand New.

[–]TyEbStylee 0 points1 point ago

[–]lutusp 1 point2 points ago

But modern popular music is vast wasteland, consisting of endless repetitions of themes that worked in the past. Sort of like popular movies.

If you want to leave the beaten path, try listening to something out of the ordinary -- like this. I have linked to a piece of music that (a) was featured in the movie "The English Patient" and (b) is about as far as one can get from common, popular music.

And it's beautiful.

[–]Radialshifter 0 points1 point ago

I linked the me gusta song!!! /hispter redditor http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMHdnpNisew

[–]joeboi85 0 points1 point ago

Although I completely agree with the statement above, I kinda like it when they post lesser-known songs by big bands. I've learned to listen to and appreciate songs that I would otherwise skip.

[–]Sprags 0 points1 point ago

[–]_beeks 0 points1 point ago

/r/listentothis /r/listentomusic /r/wearethemusicmakers

/r/music is for the type of thing you're tired of... Being reminded of awesome popular songs. If you want some new stuff, scour smaller subreddits.

[–]TestAcctPlsIgnore 1 point2 points ago

What do you think would happen if we banned YouTube links? Would the quality of postings in general improve? At what cost?

Just brainstorming here

[–]ElectricSeal 0 points1 point ago

I suppose this is the proper time to plug a friend of a friends band, The Zolas?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Because when good links are posted (like the ones I post) they go unseen because they are unrecognizable. Who's going to click on the new House of Fools song/album?

[–]TheMartinConan -1 points0 points ago

More Metallica!

[–]ezekielziggy 0 points1 point ago

This probably won't get noticed but an old school friend just released his first single!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b3vQhYFlpPA

[–]sberder 1 point2 points ago

My huge frustration with this subreddit is the fact that I'm surfing from Germany and GEMA did not authorize ANY music on youtube. So 90% of the youtube music links are simply useless to me. For the details you can go to wikipedia and read why I hate them.

[–]thebig187 -1 points0 points ago

Alkaline Trio. Please. One of the lesser known bands that need recognition.

[–]23_ 2 points3 points ago

Alkaline Trio are huge.

[–]AnimusOscura 0 points1 point ago

Because people want to listen to songs by popular bands they already support and enjoy. No one ever wants to try anything new. I made a post the other day linking to an awesome but little-known electro artist's music. Zero fucks (and upvotes) given.

[–]TheGreatWildFrontier 0 points1 point ago

Hmm I think Reddit could be used as a great tool to find new music, but yeah...it's mostly wasted on shit that's played on the radio or popular anyway. No big deal though...

[–]carly_pants 1 point2 points ago

I disagree, I take it as a place to go for great reminders -- Hey, remember this amazing fucking song?? LISTEN TO IT AGAIN NOW!!! Or, just for the pure sake of sharing great songs. Painting a picture for others to understand why you listen to what you listen to. And to answer that question, you go here to fucking post it. Bam. Yeah, it's everything you may already know about music, but it means more than that for the person posting it. Take it as a "I care so much about you all, and by the way you're welcome for making 4 minuntes of my day rock" /rant

[–]santiagoeagsantiagoeag 1 point2 points ago

go to /mu/

[–]euhop92 0 points1 point ago

I've tried five or so times to introduce new band and music to this sub-reddit that aren't big at all, but I've had little or no response to them at all, so I don't bother anymore.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Any love for my friends band? http://www.reverbnation.com/fjokra

[–]napster2k6 0 points1 point ago

You'll have to convert to a different subreddit if youre going to find new music. More spesefic reddits. Maybe you should check this out

[–]Monk_NTMonk_NT 1 point2 points ago

Ok, I have a question. Every so often we get a self post like this here in /r/music, and everybody agrees with it, everybody upvotes it. After this kind of a post, there is usually some short period of time where things change, and /r/music is a better place. And then, everything changes back to the same old, same old. My question is this. Who are these people who post links to Pink Floyd etc? Who are the people who upvote it? I mean, everybody agrees that things need to change.

Dead Meadow: At Her Open Door

[–]TessierAshpoolSpA 1 point2 points ago

Drive By Truckers

[–]schoolforrobots 0 points1 point ago

I suggest soundcloud for finding lesser-known interesting music. I have made some great connections there through my page: www.soundcloud.com/schoolforrobots

[–]Allumina 0 points1 point ago

Let it be known some of us are at least trying... submitted not to long ago my favorite artist, Jason Molina with a whopping 3 hits!

Fuck it, listen to the whole damned album.

[–]Quercus_lobata 0 points1 point ago

I agree. Here, have a lesser known band.

[–]jejejeje16 0 points1 point ago

DAE LIKE MODEST MOUSE

[–]bobnudd 0 points1 point ago

I have stopped looking at this subreddit for the most as eventually I could convince myself that "music" only consists of indie/rock/pop. I guess it just reflects the users that browse it.

[–]P2000Camaro 1 point2 points ago

This post also pisses me off. Because I read a post just like it a few months ago, so I started posting a bunch of really good local bands that I know, and obscure classic rock songs from well known bands. All of them just got ignored and downvoted. So while /r/music keeps bitching that there is no new or original content, most of you don't actually want new or original content. I'll still see fuckin Metallica - Enter Sandman on the front page tomorrow.

/rant

[–]Lucifers_Friend 1 point2 points ago

Grown tired? I noticed this the first time I entered r/music.

[–]Aiursrage2k 1 point2 points ago

Well look up "circle takes the square" I dont know if they were or ever got popular but I liked there first album which I of course never bought only listend to it on youtube
