This ought to do it.

This type of behavior is more harmful than marijuana.

Seriously, I'm trying like all the other people on here to be non-judgmental, but I can't help it any more. You were drunk on reddit (which a lot of people do, no need to AMA about it), and you do realize that alcohol is a drug, right? It's got one of the higher dependency rates and potentials for addiction, but you can buy it at your corner liquor store.

Based on your AMA I discovered two or three things I'd like to bring up:

  1. You're in college (presumably). You should be learning to think for yourself. Smoke it if you actually want to, but don't try and pin it all on your super-religious parents.

  2. This one is going to be mean. You wrote, as pretty much the only line of your AMA, "p.s. Probably won't answer a single question until my BAC is below .01 (12 hours)". To be frank, you sound like a prude. The entire set up of that post was "Woo I'm wasted but I'll talk to all of you guys when I'm sober later". This post is like "woo I hate weed but I love sex and I can't make decisions for myself so I have the internet do it for me."

Seriously. Grow a pair and smoke up if you want to. You may not have smoked before now because of parental pressure or religious teachings or a really convincing D.A.R.E program, but now you have a girl that you like that smokes and you have an opportunity to see the other side.

This post needs to be upvoted more.

This OP showcases the main problem with getting legilization passed in the USA/Canada. The social stigma against marijuana and its effects.

DCMurphy correctly and amazingly well pointed out the OP's abuse of a depressant that is scientifically proven to be much much worse for someone then marijuana.

I think this argument is over.

montage420 6 points7 points 4 months ago[-]

lol. I was having trouble making sense out of this guy until I saw this post. OP.. you are childish. If I had my way, I'd ban you from reddit until you grow up a bit. Stop wasting our time.

Conlaeb 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Murphy, I honestly think this kid must be pretty young. I certainly don't go to a party school but I cannot imagine anyone making it until spring break of their first year without having had a drink first. This smacks of high school drama.

DCMurphy 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I don't think his post is his first time drinking. He says it's his "first time drunk on reddit", I don't think that means "first time drunk, on reddit".

And the fact that he can identify himself as drunk means that he must be fairly familiar with alcohol.

Conlaeb 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Oh yeah, I misread. Good on then.

MistyMountainHop 50 points51 points 4 months ago[-]

You might think about giving it a try just so you can form your own opinion. Don't feel that you have to do it, but it might be worth considering. If the idea of smoking something doesn't appeal to you, you could try baking with it instead.

bolllocks 85 points86 points 4 months ago[-]

This has nothing to do with pot, it's about your ego...

mcreeves 10 points11 points 4 months ago[-]

That's what I was gonna say.

It's your own opinions and views that are holding you back. You say you don't want to judge. Do you really not want to judge? Simple, stop judging. People are gonna do what they do anyways, whether you judge them or not. So, instead of putting yourself through grief, realize that there's nothing you can do, and just enjoy it. And her. Maybe even try a puff. You never know, you might like it.

potscentedpot 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

while you're probably right, there is an axis of personality between being Judgement and Processing.. some people are able to sit back and just observe things going on while other people's personality makes them more susceptible to formulating judgemental opinions based on those observations

PunThreadsAreLame 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

If by 'stink' and 'taste bad' you mean 'smell delicious' and 'taste phenomenal' then yes, they do =D.

Also, pot really isn't that big of a deal. And think of it as something she does, not who she is.

[deleted] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I know its not because i smoke it too lol.

I just hate the ciggies. but like i said, i deal with it.

Gonzo53 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I agree that cigs are gross and generally bad. I don't judge though. I have had my fair share of drunk cigs. With every argument for legalization in mind, I can not for the life of me even utter the words marijuana is illegal and I am going to obey the government's wishes. Also, I think that weed is generally a great drug. While it can help with numerous medical issues, it also helps me alleviate hangovers and enjoy food, movies, and music more. Anyone that says that weed is immoral probably also thinks that condom usage is a sin. Do not listen to your parents. You are an adult

diggbots -1 points0 points 4 months ago[-]

cigs are terrible! at this point i only date someone long term whom I could eventually consider a potential marriage candidate. I refuse to date someone who smokes cigarettes. I have friends who smoke and I don't judge them. But I do judge a potential life mate solely on the principle that its unhealthy. I want to be with you for the rest of my life.. Then why would I want to date someone that is shortening their lifespan by such a stupid vice?

cigs aren't worth it. if you smoke the green? I have no problem as there isn't any evidence long term that it causes damage.

[deleted] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

She smokes the green and the brown lol. I have an occasional cigar, but who she is, is not changed by the cigarette she inhales, and i would rather have who i want, then find a substitute because she smokes a cig every 20 minutes lol. Now meth.. crack..speed or whatever else along them lines, those will make me leave in a heartbeat. if she would not quit that is.

diggbots 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

scenario. this is the perfect girl. you want to marry her. you can or rather should agree with me that its stupid to have your girlfriend smoke.

lets say for the sake of argument that you are married and you have the picture perfect marriage. You love each other. She gets cancer and dies because of smoking. The love of your life dies because she couldn't put down the cigarettes. Wouldn't you think that is a selfish thing for her to do? She likes it but she continues to do it knowing that it will shorten her life. Assuming you don't die before her she is taking the time away from you and her family just because she wants to smoke.

If she doesn't die from Cancer here are all the other fun things she can expect.

All smokers are at extra risk for:

* Coronary heart disease (for example, heart attacks);
* Peripheral vascular disease (circulatory problems);
* Aortic aneurysm;
* High blood pressure;
* High cholesterol (LDL);
* Lung cancer;
* Cancer of the mouth, throat and voice box;
* Cancer of the pancreas;
* Cancer of the kidney, and urinary bladder;
* Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD);
* Chronic bronchitis;
* Emphysema;
* Pneumonia;
* Influenza (the "flu");
* The common cold;
* Peptic ulcers;
* Chronic bowel disease (Crohn's Disease);
* Tooth decay (cavities);
* Gum disease;
* Osteoporosis;
* Sleep problems (falling asleep inappropriately and/or frequent waking);
* Cataracts; and
* Thyroid disease (Grave's Disease).

Yum. Makes me wonder why with all this information out now why people continue to smoke and even start in the first place.

[deleted] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I don't believe in marriage. Problem solved.

But srsly, i used to smoke and i quit.. once i found weed that is. It has too many risks for me, but her decision is her decision, and i love her how she is. If she decides to quit on her own like i did, good for her, but her smoking wont stop me from wanting to be with her. It selfish for you to want to get your way, over what she wants is it not? Either way someone is selfish in this situation.

diggbots 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Keep in mind that whatever bad opinion of cannabis smokers you have is based on the reality of its prohibition. Those smokers who want maximize their chances of staying out of trouble remain behind closed doors.

If cannabis was regulated like alcohol and you could enjoy it in public, those previously self induced shut-ins would have a chance to get out. They could engage in the outwardly productive activities that are more socially acceptable without incident.

As it stands, cannabis users tend to gravitate towards inwardly productive or creative outlets. This already puts them on the fringe of American society except perhaps in the larger urban areas.

A rigidified authoritarian power structure, such as a church and by extension your family will never accept someone like this girl. This is not necessarily because she uses cannabis. This is because they know, at least subconsciously, that she will not submit to their localized social game rules. Though they will try to discredit her; the reality is that she represents a threat to their social control mechanisms.

You might not understand this completely until you remove yourself from that environment long enough to relax some of those conditioned reflexes. You may not even realize that your current environment is designed to make you operate below the level of reason by way of conditioned reflexes and faith.

Listen to the exact words your parents and other adults use. I'm willing to bet that most of their language is made up of strict black and white, either/or assertions. The language you use effects your perception and therefore your behavior. They make an evaluation based on their social conditioning, project that evaluation outward and call it reality. They will never realize that what they call reality is really just their own personal evaluations. These evaluations only really apply to their own nervous system, and those around them who have been conditioned to react to the same set of game rules.

It's really easy to overlook with a large community like a church. Everyone's assertions and personal evaluations are more or less homgenous relative to that social group. They will have successfully managed to filter out or demonize all of the conflicting signals from the outside world. Without sufficient perspective it is easy to forget that a social group's interpretation of the external world is just that... an interpretation. It is applicable only for that group and is functionally meaningless outside of that group.

This is, I hope, what you will come to personally experience if you engage in cannabis use...

That reality is plural and mutable.

That our interactions are really negotiations at the borders of our accumulated world views and that when it comes to everyone's interpretation of the outside world everyone is still guessing.

Scenario universe is non-simultaneously apprehended.

No one has the complete truth about everything. Anyone who claims to know, or possesses a book that claims to know the complete truth about everything is directly contradicting all of the knowledge of the 20th century.

Oh sorry... wrong meeting. That's tomorrow night at the docks. What were we talking about?

I don't know how old you are, but if you're still a child, just follow the parents' rules for now. If you're an adult, then grow a pair and smoke with the girl. Don't look down on potheads. Look down on crappy people. Marijuana isn't going to make you a bad nor good person. It won't change you. It will relax you for a few hours. Then you're back to normal. The greatest mistake ever made by our gov't is lumping drugs like cocaine and heroin in with marijuana. Marijuana is safe. That other shit will kill you.

Think about it this way:

God created everything on this earth. Marijuana is a natural plant that can be used as medicine or recreationally to alleviate stress, anxiety, pains, nausea, and can give you an appetite if you are sick. If this is immoral, than so is any other medicine that is prescribed or bought over the counter. As for recreational use, it can put you in touch with your creative side, and allows you to see things from a completely different angle.

The reason people think its immoral is because that's what they have been taught to believe since MJ was criminalized in the early 1900s. Before then, people had been smoking cannabis without problems for thousands of years.

Whats the difference between consuming a tomato and consuming cannabis? Its all in your head. There is nothing in the bible that says marijuana is against gods word.

my_cat_joe 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I was in the same situation, only in reverse. My girlfriend doesn't smoke and I do. She thought it would be a relationship breaker.

I told her "Look, you're hung up on this idea that marijuana is bad. I don't share that hang up, and I never, ever will. That's your hang up, not mine."

The unattractive, or problematic, part isn't your viewpoint. It's the fixed nature of your viewpoint. At least that's the way I felt with her. If you don't have any experience with any other way, then your viewpoint is just a hang up. You are just stuck on what you know. Personally, I'm always more attracted to people who enjoy living, and learning and growing. I toughed it out with her, and I'm glad I did. You should hope your girl isn't completely turned off by your fixed nature.

xjvz 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

mynewname 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

EDIT: a lot of you are suggesting that I try it. Well I did try it, and I almost lost my job because of it.

You going to tell us the story or just provide an overdramatic summary?

RipCity 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Sounds to me like you're dealing with an issue of knowledge.. While you've recognized that much of what you were taught through school, church, etc. regarding MJ is false; you've yet to understand MJ itself. This becomes apparent in your edit; if you tried weed your first time before work, that was a terrible call. I suggest you further your experimentation with weed, you'll start to control your high and see why others enjoy it ( I promise, it takes some people ~10 tries before they get comfortable with the feeling).. Just don't let it interfere with your current life, i.e. only do it when you're free from obligations for the day/night. I believe that anyone, with an open mind, can break the superstitions and propaganda those in authority have placed upon this plant. It's a matter of wanting to do so, and to do so one must understand the plant.. If you do this, so too will you understand/connect with those who enjoy it as well. That said, your standard stoner chick is a bit different than the average female. Make sure she is what you think she is, otherwise you'll be trying to accept pot solely because a girl you like smokes it.

Dear Reddit - I met a girl - she's awesome and I like her, but there's a huge barrier in the way and I'm trying to take it down.

I was raised super agnostic and was taught say no to "God" and say no to people who believe in "God". Well now I've grown up and learned that there is a difference between something that is real and imagined. I believe that "God" is imagined and is ok by me.

However my brainwashing parents are keeping me from fully realizing this view. I still find myself judging those who believe in "God", and looking down upon them. I don't want to. I want to not judge. I guess my situation is similar to a racist trying to not be racist anymore.

I guess it works in your situation too....

I think the best way to get rid of your prejudices is to throw yourself into the crossfire, so you are taking a step in the right direction by dating someone who smokes. Observe people. Maybe even smoke once or twice. You'll realize that they are people just like anyone else. A habit doesn't define a person, the sum of their actions defines a person. Hopefully you will come to realize that.

I find that it's best to follow what you believe in. It's good that you've found someone you like, but it seems that you can't help feeling this way about people who use drugs. Weed isn't for everyone, but people who smoke it are still people. Perhaps you should take some time and really figure out what you believe before you date this girl; it would be terrible to constantly hold a grudge against this against this woman and start a relationship that would be focused on either one of you trying to convince the other to change.

tldr: don't be coerced into smoking but come to terms with your bias before dating this woman

dirtydee000thedi 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Educate yourself. Weed is safer than alcohol, cigarettes or Tylenol. It is a better choice and smarter.

You can fight the good fight only when you educate yourself.

This is not a huge barrier, it is a social and legal view that is built on false assumptions.

vapulate 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

For entirely different reasons, I was the same way when I was in high school. Then I started dating a girl who smoked and she slowly changed my perception of weed. You will change too-- just give it time. Once you're around it for awhile, you realize that everything you think it is isn't, and you'll eventually adopt a different mindset about it.

My only advice is to not let a single thing she does define who she is to you. Even if you don't smoke, and even if you try it and hate it, you need to accept her choices at face value.
