The key is to not make too drastic a change to it, so the brand/logo recognition remains intact.

I'd stick with a similar framework to the logo they have now, but is try to lessen the "cartoon" nature of it, and just aim for a more adult looking logo.

Ostencibly, take what you have now, and what the NFL, MLB and NBA have done, and do a "if they mated".....

the original one was cleaner....

I'm doing a project for graduate school where I improve the MLS brand in the public eye over the semester. One of my points was to tweak the logo, and these were my thoughts exactly.

Well as a proud owner of "photoshop skills" I came up with this 100% original piece.

Here.

edit: Based on feedback, I have revamped the logo.

Nailed it.

You and I, we share the same television interests.

[–]Portland Timbershikingdub 2 points3 points ago

Love it! And so will half our team!

[–]LA AztecsTeddyV 3 points4 points ago

That looks like knock of from Club America's mascot..

[–]New York Red Bullsrazorhater 0 points1 point ago

One of the places I go for lunch near work has a big Club America banner behind the counter. It's basically a giant eagle, as pictured above, stomping out various other club mascots. It's pretty campy.

i hope you're joking

[–]New York Red BullsLogicProfessor 17 points18 points ago

I thought it was obvious. Cracks me up every time I look at it.

[–]New York Red Bullsgiacomo135 0 points1 point ago

oh thank god, lol.

[–]New York Red BullsLogicProfessor 7 points8 points ago

I still think it looks pretty damn bad ass.

I just read "Major Leeeeague" in a really awesome announcer voice. Thanks for giving me that moment.

[–]New York Red BullsDrunken_Economist 4 points5 points ago

Maybe get rid of a bit of the detail on the bottom of the cleat, so that it can be more easily reproduced in different media? Honestly I really like it as it though.

The US Soccer crest, though, needs to change. It looks like something from a youth soccer league.

[–]Seattle Sounderswheezl 7 points8 points ago

The current logo doesn't really represent the league. Though if you turn it upside down so the studs are facing up, that problem goes away.

[–]Seattle Soundersevilned 6 points7 points ago

I wouldn't. It looks fine.

[–]New York Red Bullsrazorhater 2 points3 points ago

Agreed. I've never had a issue with the league's logo. It's not great, but it could be so much worse. Someone else in the thread said do an "if they mated" type of logo. That's exactly what we've got now.

My revamp:

  1. Beckham's face

  2. Titties in the background

  3. Slogan underneathe it all...MLS: GET SOME

All due respect, but I prefer the real logo. Also, this one retains the cartoonish feel, which is my biggest gripe.

[–]Houston DynamoSonicPavement 2 points3 points ago

I agree with the consensus here that the MLS logo is "good enough." Yes, it's cartoony and bubbly, but it's recognizable and decently tasteful. Now the US Soccer logo, on the other hand…

[–]LA AztecsTeddyV 1 point2 points ago

Id do a Mutant League version for Halloween... Sharp, spiked cleats with the ball being the head of some poor sap..

[–]LA Galaxyseanmharcailin 1 point2 points ago

I have no skillz tonight, but I would just simplify the hell out of it. 3 or 4 colors... maybe i'll play with it tomorrow...

[–]DisraeliEers 0 points1 point ago

Firstly, we don't use a ball that resembles the ball in the logo. Secondly, I would like to see it simplified some.

So a more simplified take on the current logo with a more abstract ball would be pretty cool (I'm at work or I'd make a quick mockup)

[–]MathLo 1 point2 points ago

This may be a good question to ask /r/design. I'm sure some of those guys would take a good crack at it.

[–]Seattle SoundersSounderBruce 0 points1 point ago

Red, white, and blue eagle clutching a soccer ball. England has their lion, but we have our badass multicolored eagle.

[–]BinLeenk 1 point2 points ago

I'd add a bunch of those robots the Fox NFL broadcasts use, because, apparently, Americans like digital robots (mechs?).

[–]Toronto FCRedCoatsForever 1 point2 points ago

I think we do one better; Go full Mechwarrior versus Metal Gear while the planet burns in the background. It just screams "You're about to watch a sporting event".

[–]BinLeenk 1 point2 points ago

You can also sell ad space on the MLS ball, but only to most evil corporations on earth like Monsanto, Exxon Mobil, Halliburton, etc. Then, you show a wealthy banker type repeatedly kick the ball at poor people.

[–]Toronto FCRedCoatsForever 0 points1 point ago

Well, if nothing else, we may convert the Fox News crowd. I say what odds!

[–]New York Red BullsHeadphoneWarrior 0 points1 point ago

Replace the ball wth Beckham's face and the boot with a gold bar.

[–]San Jose Earthquakesxxdelta77xx 1 point2 points ago

Well for starters I wouldn't use Photoshop, seeing as its not a photo.

[–]LA Galaxyhodge_podge11 3 points4 points ago

this is true. illustrator, illustrator, illustrator.

[–]San Jose Earthquakesxxdelta77xx 1 point2 points ago

Upvote for designers who like soccer, despite being of our rival team.

Also, what's with the downvotes? I was correct.

[–]Portland Timberscorylew -1 points0 points ago

San Jose is rivals with L.A.? Did L.A. know this?

[–]San Jose Earthquakesxxdelta77xx 0 points1 point ago

Yes they do. One of the biggest in MLS. Are you familiar with the California Classico?

[–]Portland TimbersBrendyn -2 points-1 points ago

The only thing I don't like about it; it's the same colors as the Seattle Sounders logo.
