Awesome user name for an amputee.
[–]stumpgod[S] 20 points21 points22 points 2 years ago
Thanks
[–]stumpgod[S] 28 points29 points30 points 2 years ago
First Answer: I lost my leg while playing on a train. got it mostly ripped off when my leg somehow got caught up in the wheel truck mechanism.
[–]jimmyw 15 points16 points17 points 2 years ago
Did it hurt or where you in shock and just passout?
[–]stumpgod[S] 22 points23 points24 points 2 years ago
I blacked out for a few seconds, then shock kicked in so i didn't feel too much. Until they had to pick me up and put me on the board, my leg was still attached by about 2 inches of flesh, that fucking hurt. Feel kinda bad for the guy that picked my leg up.
[–]bananapeel 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
Do you maintain contact with the EMS people who worked on you?
[–]stumpgod[S] 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
No, the main guy that saved me by putting a tourniquet on my leg, i saw him when i was in the hospital but that was it, the emts and LifeFlight pilots came to see me as well.
[–]faerielfire 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Same thing happened to my Uncle but with his arm. He was trying to jump a train while drunk.
[–]stumpgod[S] 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago*
I met a guy from my side of town once named,
"All Right"
He was jumping a train fell under cutting off his left side, from crotch to shoulder. He lived and is the one to name himself that. When one of his friends came to visit in the hospital, he asked how he was, and he said "Don't worry i'm all right."
Note: I know it sounds like a bad joke, but i have met the guy.
[–]defrost 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
Yeah - my friend effectively lost his right arm in a motor vehicle accident 16 years ago.
I say right as he was a right handed sculptor and glass blower before the accident. I say effectively as his injury was a brachial plexus one that ripped the nerves out at the shoulder.
He's kept the arm - if asked he'll tell people that he's attached to it and that it's "for spares". If kids ask what's the matter with his arm he'll often say he used to chew his nails and got carried away one day.
Post accident recovery for him was a long process - there were a lot of complications and he still has phantom pains from hell to deal with, but, as you can see from the photo, he's back in the game.
[–]sirfink 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
I went to elementary school with a girl who did the exact same thing. Are you her?
[–]stumpgod[S] 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago*
No but i know a girl who had the same thing happen to her. Same tracks, same leg, same amount of leg missing.
Where you from?
[–]MercurialMadnessMan 25 points26 points27 points 2 years ago
Do you have phantom limb syndrome? Do you ever feel as though your leg is still there?
[–]stumpgod[S] 34 points35 points36 points 2 years ago
Almost every day i get phantom pains. It feels like i'm wearing shoes 4 sizes too small, while having a 400 lbs fat bitch in stiletto heels is standing on my foot.
Weed helps though. Sometimes it takes the pain away fully, but when the pain isn't fully gone it just makes it feel funny.
[–][deleted] 25 points26 points27 points 2 years ago*
Does the mirror trick work? I remember hearing Dr. Ramachandran talk about using mirrors to ease phantom limb pain in a Ted talk.
[–]stumpgod[S] 18 points19 points20 points 2 years ago
I've never tried it. But i have been able to flex my "Toes" once or twice while high.
[–]no_dawg 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
You should definitely try it out. It looks incredibly simple to do.
[–]harbinjer 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
This is an awesome TED talk: http://www.ted.com/index.php/talks/vilayanur_ramachandran_on_your_mind.html
His accent is one of the most interesting I've ever heard.
[–]no_dawg 10 points11 points12 points 2 years ago
Fucking Awesome TED talk, btw.
[–]Fauster 25 points26 points27 points 2 years ago
Do you have any pictures of yourself running from a volcano?
No but this is as close as i got. http://img15.imageshack.us/img15/4576/l0857ad44e9bc4e68a98c40.jpg
[–]OEP 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
Wow. This pretty much rocks.
[–]esotericguy 16 points17 points18 points 2 years ago
Do you ever make up fantastic stories about how you lost it? For fun, or to pick up chicks maybe?
All the time.
The one i used to use most often was that i got attacked by a rabid (insert small pissed off mammal here). Some people realize it's a joke but i can make it sound dead serious if i want.
I told a guy it was a badger once and he ended up filling in the "missing" parts of the story, so i just went with it.
[–]Facelessjoe 17 points18 points19 points 2 years ago
Do you ever use it to get chicks? I would be all like "Yea, I was saving these orphans trapped in bamboo cages in the Congo(God knows if there's bamboo in the Congo, but if I don't know, they don't know), and I fell out of the tree, hitting a rusty coat hanger(presumably made by orphan labor) that gave me gangrene, but not before saving all 480 of the children and three Toucans".
[–]stumpgod[S] 19 points20 points21 points 2 years ago
I'm gonna try that when i go to the club on Wednesday.
[–]Facelessjoe 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago
Let me know if it works.
Didn't work
[–]Facelessjoe 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
Dang. What were there responses?
[–]stumpgod[S] 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago
Couple of laughs and a couple of WTF? looks. BUT it works as an intro line for one or two girls.
[–]Ninwa 18 points19 points20 points 2 years ago
Whenever I see an amputee I want to stare. It's just inherently interesting to me. I don't pass judgment, or think poorly of anyone, but I just want to look at it and let my brain absorb the image for awhile. Does it bother you when people look at you maybe a little longer than they should have? Do you consider it rude?
I stare too. But what annoys me most is when parents tell there kids to stop staring cuz it's rude, then gawk harder then there kids ever were.
[–]sammysunset 16 points17 points18 points 2 years ago
This reminds me of a time that my 7 year old kept staring at an Amputee even though I quietly and repeatedly told him not to.
Then, I thought about how I would feel if I had an amputation and a child kept staring at me... then I realized having someone to talk to about something that is otherwise such an ignored feature of your body would probably be fun as hell.
So, I looked to my son and said, "Come with me," and I walked up to the cheerful-looking man with a stump.
I waited until he finished speaking to someone and asked, "Sir, I hate to bother you, but would you mind if my Son asked a few questions about your amputation? He's fascinated by it."
The man was very surprised and excited to talk to my son about it. Now, my son doesn't stare but actually gives amputees a thumbs up every time he sees them.
[–]TooNiceForReddit 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
I've always wondered how people would feel if I did this with my son. He's still a toddler, but he already understands differences, and it would be nice to expose him to diversity instead of just tell him not to stare. I always worry that it won't go over well, though.
[–]bananapeel 15 points16 points17 points 2 years ago
Do you dress as a pirate every halloween?
[–]stumpgod[S] 13 points14 points15 points 2 years ago
I work at a haunted house, and a couple of us run around as the "Butt Pirates" sometimes (cheap pirate costumes, acting obscenely queer).
[–]faerielfire 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago
I was going to ask this and then felt like a bad person..
[–]soitis 12 points13 points14 points 2 years ago
Has anything in your life even come close to the (physical) pain you experienced then?
What kind of prosthetic do you have?
[–]stumpgod[S] 21 points22 points23 points 2 years ago*
The pain of the accident is nothing compared to the pains of skin graphs(FUCKING OWW), and the everyday pains of when the leg throws off my hips and whatnot.
I have a basic below knee, carbon fiber leg. My current foot is the Freedom RenegadeMX
[–]soitis 13 points14 points15 points 2 years ago
Did you have to pay for this. How expensive is it? It most certainly would suck to lose a leg and have to choose the "Ahab" instead of the "T-800 RF" for financial reasons.
[–]stumpgod[S] 19 points20 points21 points 2 years ago*
Are you referring to my Ahab?
I have the Gov. insurance currently. so it pays for everything. Otherwise they are a couple Thousand starting price.
[–]jimmyw 8 points9 points10 points 2 years ago*
Wow you are a massive pothead.
Edit: in a good way
[–]TruthinessHurts 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
You rock.
[–]Etab 10 points11 points12 points 2 years ago
Have you ever gone to an amusement park or carnival and won a stuffed animal at the "Guess your weight" stand because the person wasn't aware that you're an amputee?
[–]stumpgod[S] 9 points10 points11 points 2 years ago
While the prosthetic is a little lighter than a normal leg. It doesn't make that much of a difference.
[–]MisterBusiness 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago
What's the hardest part about being an amputee?
[–]stumpgod[S] 14 points15 points16 points 2 years ago*
I'm not sure if i can answer that. I have had my leg most of my life so it's normal to me. however the pains it causes(aches, pains, etc.) suck, and at times it hurts so much i can't even wear it.
It has caused me to have to quit some jobs due to the fact it makes my body hurt easier, i was a welder for a lil while but the physical stress was a bit too much, that's why i'm going to school for Computer networks now, much easier on the body(and much less fear of cancer or death).
[–]Duodecim 7 points8 points9 points 2 years ago
When you go through airport security, do you have to take off your prosthetic and put it on the conveyor belt?
I have always wanted to know this.
never been on a flight, but i used to put it into the tiny tray when we had weapon searches in high school. They laughed so hard i just grabbed my stuff and walked through, unchecked.
[–]duode 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Weapon searches in high school?... Where was your high school?
Toledo, Ohio They did them "randomly" but you could always tell when one was going on because no one was outside the school in the morning.
And that isn't very rare anymore. People seem to think that the world is more dangerous than ever but that is just made up bullshit. Crime is lower now than in the past 40 years or so. The world is what we make it to be, if we say it's dangerous ,then it is, at least in our minds.(not on topic but it needed to be said)
Some schools have metal detectors permanently installed.
They never found weapons, but would confiscate cigarettes and lighters. One time some kid got caught with a 12 pack of beer in his backpack. It was funny to see about 200 kids counting em out as they pulled em out of his pack. Then we cheered. Then he got suspended lol.
[–]sbenskin 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago*
no question, just wanted to say this is probably the best thread I have ever read. The freedom for everyone to ask all the questions they've wanted to, but never could to a stranger in real life. Fantastic. Thanks for taking the time to answer everyone's questions!
[–]stumpgod[S] 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
No problem. But i was thinking the same thing about the I Am A subreddit.
[–]kevlarbaboon 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
How is your sex life?
Great usually, but we just had our 3rd kid so things are a bit hectic at the moment.
This fits with a question i get a lot: I have sex with it on and off depending on how i feel.
[–]kevlarbaboon 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
well how do you feel right now?
Better now that i have cigarettes.
[–]abbrevia 5 points6 points7 points 2 years ago
Do you prefer walking around with a prosthetic leg, or are you a wheelchair kinda guy?
How do you find walking on a prosthetic leg? I'd imagine it would feel like walking on a dead leg or with pins and needles and having no feeling at all.
[–]stumpgod[S] 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
i fuck around on wheel chairs if one is available. But i wear my leg all the time except for sleeping and bathing, and sometimes i wear it swimming.
When i first got it, it felt like a million pins and needles, but you get used to it within a couple weeks.
Actually it feels like wearing a shoe, kinda.
[–]harbinjer 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
Can you hold a wheelie in a wheelchair? Can you take it up or down 1 step?
[–]stumpgod[S] 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
If i'm in a wheel chair i'm doing a wheelie. Haven't gotten a chance to try a step though.
[–]harbinjer 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
In the simple pleasures thread, you mention you like to scratch your stump. Do you like other people scratching it? What about massaging it?
I had an ex- gf who would massage it, but that was years ago.
[–]nullibicity 3 points4 points5 points 2 years ago
Have you known people to be more sexually interested in you knowing you were an amputee? Was that something you welcomed as just another feature someone would be interested in (like hair color), or did it make you uncomfortable?
I'm open to almost anything sexually. but i haven't met any people specifically into that. but my wife uses the line "Ever have sex with a one-legged man and his wife?" to try to pick up chicks for us.
[–]nullibicity 6 points7 points8 points 2 years ago
Heh, I take it she hasn't succeeded. :}
[–]stumpgod[S] 12 points13 points14 points 2 years ago
yes and no. Couple girls are gonna join us but schedules havent worked out yet.
[–]clahs 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
I'll have to have a word with your wife and try to twist her arm to invite a guy to join your three-some. My hand is already up hehe....
[–]aggressive_rabbit 4 points5 points6 points 2 years ago
You kids seem fun! Shit... I'm officially a stalker now.
[–]duode 2 points3 points4 points 2 years ago
What was it like for you to adjust to the accident as a 8 year old? Did you get depressed at that early age or in high school because you didn't have both legs?
[–]stumpgod[S] 0 points1 point2 points 2 years ago
Nah i never got depressed. The only time i really stressed about it was when they had just put me in the ambulance. I asked if i was gonna lose my leg, and of course she said " I don't know". From then on i was fine with it.
[–]blade1982 1 point2 points3 points 2 years ago
Sounds like you have a better life than most man :) thanks for a buzzy thread, educational.
