4G toggle app or widget? (self.GalaxyNexus)
submitted 4 months ago by speezo_mchenry
Looking in the market but I'm not finding one for GNex. Anybody using one? Looks like they might be device specific?

The Tbolt LTE On/Off work. Only brings you to the settings screen though, I haven't found a toggle widget that is a true toggle for LTE/3G yet.

A toggle for 4G/3G would be magical... saves some seconds going into Settings but those seconds add up

I would really like it.

If your concern is battery life I highly recommend Juice Defender Ultimate. I have the extended battery and with Juice defender, with moderate to heavy use throughout the day I can go about 24 h without plugging into a charger. Just have it set to keep data off when the screen is off and turn on periodically (I have it set to every 5 minutes) to connect and check for email, google talk messages, etc. Doesn't affect SMS or calls coming in and saves loads on battery and getting a message/email notification 5 minutes after it arrives is not going to affect my life. There are many tweaks; I just don't want to go into details.

I've used JD and found Green Power to be a much more stable solution.
The problem I have with both of them, though, is that the VZW GNex has a lot of trouble connecting to 4g after data has been off. If you stay connected, it's less of a problem but the constant toggling would leave me without a data connection at times when I needed it.
Do you get this issue at all?

Yeah, I do too. Very irritating, as I like the idea of JD, but it takes too damn long to get data going again after it's off for me. 3G sometimes comes back instantly, but 4G takes a while. And JD sometimes has turned off data and NOT turned it back on when it should have which is a deal killer.

Yeah, it's extremely frustrating. I've been using it for over a year on the incredible and it was good for doubling battery life.

Weird, when I turn my screen on I have 4G up and running within about 1 second. Is that what you're talking about? For me that's not much time at all, by the time I swipe through a couple screens it's up.
Mine would take quite a bit longer; and sometimes JD wouldn't recognize the screen was on, so it wouldn't go off of "disable data" mode. I may try it again since not everyone is having this issue.

can you expand on the JD vs Green Power view?
I used JD for a long time but for whatever reason it seemed to make my whole system unstable. I didn't use wifi or any of the more advanced controls so I went to green power, which had an easier to use UI and just works. I prefer it to the bells and whistles of JD.
hmm what are the reasons to go premium vs free with the app?
For me, Tasker support. I don't use any other premium features but Tasker support lets me pause green power when certain apps are open, the only feature I missed from JuiceDefender.
hmm ok thanks!
I'm not sure what you mean exactly, because I don't use Tasker or Green Power, but you know you can configure Juice Defender based on what apps/services are open, right? For example, I have it set to always keep the radio/wifi on when I'm using google music. It does everything automatically.
Hence I said "the only feature I miss from JuiceDefender". The whole point of me using green power was that JD is unstable.
curious as to how long it takes to re-connect to 3G on the gnex (didnt take long on my DX, but have been wondering)
I am happy to hear your details, as i have been considering jumping on JD....

Best I've managed is using Widgetsoid to create a shortcut to the mobile network settings menu, where I can then toggle LTE/CDMA. Widgetsoid is awesome, you should check it out if you haven't. Lots of customization.

I believe you can change the network mode under Settings | Wireless & Networks - "More..." | Mobile Networks | Network Mode. Not sure if I tried to do it before I rooted my device but I thought I had seen it before then.
Clearly not as convenient as a widget, but I don't believe you need an app for it like with the TBolt.

LTE Switch app works fine for me.
[–]scottg96-CDMA Rooted- 1 point2 points3 points 4 months ago
I think the problem is that the network mode isn't an open control, meaning apps can't change it (without root, I would assume). But the LTE Switch app brings you to the appropriate Settings menu, which is as close as you'll get.
all it takes is a username and password

is it really that easy? only one way to find out...
already have an account and just want to login?
