i'm one of few people to have a few pieces of trinitite, the fused sand from the first atomic explosions at Trinity in White Sands, New Mexico. A true piece of history, it is also a piece of sand from one of the most important events in history. I will send you a small piece of this in a baggie in an envelope if you like (for verification, it is still slightly radioactive) :P

edit: changed nevada to new mexico, i'm dumb

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 22 points23 points ago

[–]TheGateIsDown 4 points5 points ago

Be careful about shipping radioactivity, there are quite a few regulations about transferring radioactivity. So there is a lot riding on that "slightly" in your comment, you may want to look into the minimum levels for shipping.

[–]Azathoth448 4 points5 points ago

the envelope i ship it in will be sufficient. it will be no issues, the geiger counter i own shows no high levels whatsoever, just more than your average rock

[–]spritle6054 3 points4 points ago

What about a banana?

[–]Water_Buffalo 0 points1 point ago

Anything below 5 mr/h at the package's surface is shippable by USPS. You'd need pounds of trinitite to reach that level.

[–]zmas 2 points3 points ago

This is really cool! Do you have any histories as to who collected it?

[–]Azathoth448 1 point2 points ago

my grandfather worked on many secret projects in the 1960s and 1970s, he knew a scientist who worked at Los Alamos, and he gave him a few pieces.

[–]carbanm 3 points4 points ago

White sands, New Mexico*

[–]monoglot 1 point2 points ago

Do not downvote carbanm. He and/or she speaks truth!

[–]Azathoth448 0 points1 point ago

YEAH JESUS OMG i've even been there

[–]NonAnonAlternate 39 points40 points ago

Considering what a great response you're getting, I'm now considering looking up Lamar Smith's address (the author of SOPA) posting an /r/Favors [Request] saying "I collect poop", then giving out his address instead of mine to those who respond

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 13 points14 points ago

I can neither confirm, nor deny, that this sounds hilarious.

[–]jook11 5 points6 points ago

What, you don't think saying "Mail poop to Lamar Smith" would work well too?

[–]jooes 14 points15 points ago

I have no sand for you, it's the middle of winter...

But, do you have any pictures of your collection? I'm kind of curious.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 13 points14 points ago

I'll take some in the morning, I'm happy to share it!

[–]SeanReddit 8 points9 points ago

[–]Sam474 6 points7 points ago

That was awesome and I loved it, but I wish this kind of creative artsy unique stuff didn't end sadly so often.

[–]haland69 4 points5 points ago

That was beautiful thank you so much for sharing it.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points ago

If the shipping fee is easily manageable, I can send you some dirt from the Queen's garden that is in front of the Legislative Building in Regina. It's a beautiful building btw.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 4 points5 points ago

Wow. That's gorgeous. Oh, Canada!

[–]ANAL_PLUNDERING 2 points3 points ago

Lol Regina That is really thoughtful

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point ago

Know, you're right, it is funny. It is named for the Latin word for "queen," which is obviously "regina." But in Latin it is pronounced "ray-geen-a" while we pronounce the city "ruh-gine-a." We rhyme with vagina for crying out loud.

[–]Handout 11 points12 points ago

Are you a fan of Disney World? I can steal sand from anywhere on property.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 11 points12 points ago

I'm a fan of the world! It's even better since its being acquired by unscrupulous means. Thank you!

[–]bsweany 10 points11 points ago

I can't be the only one who wants to see pictures of this.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 5 points6 points ago

My current collection is modest, and some of the 'samples' are layered, as in dirt from each state we stopped in from PA to ND, but I'll take pictures in the morning, all the little people are sleeping virtually under it.

[–]hasslefree 1 point2 points ago

Gave the kids a dirt-nap, eh? ....good man.

[–]jiltedjones 9 points10 points ago

How about the battlefield in Gettysburg,pa?

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 5 points6 points ago

Yes! I have a few war/history bits, a perfect addition.

[–]candiedwhiskey 8 points9 points ago

How about some Carolina clay?

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 4 points5 points ago

Yes, please! I'll pm you!

[–]lmcclel 8 points9 points ago

I can send you some dirt from Pittsburgh, PA, just let me know.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 2 points3 points ago

I'd love it. I can't believe people are going to do this! Thank you so much! I'll message you.

[–]lmcclel 1 point2 points ago

Not a problem! If there is any "special" place around Pittsburgh that you would like the dirt from, let me know!

[–]gemcitytiffany 4 points5 points ago

I might be able to get you some from the Wright Brother's grave site.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 3 points4 points ago

I'd love to have it, if you can. I'll send you my addy.

[–]DeadpoolIsMyHomeboy 4 points5 points ago

Sand from the beach of Lake Ontario?

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 4 points5 points ago

Oh yes! Throw it across Lake Erie, I'll catch it.

[–]ryanlynds 5 points6 points ago

My bro got me some dirt from Jim Morrison's grave during a school trip to France.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 11 points12 points ago

Brothers don't shake hands, Brothers give dirt.

[–]kimwim42 8 points9 points ago

shit i thought i was the only one who did that!

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 22 points23 points ago

At the risk of sounding....weird....the way the 'earth' I've collected makes me feel, is akin to what I imagine old pictures do for a lot of people.

Dirt from my gramma's grave, sand from the footprints of my children's feet the first time they saw the ocean, places that rock was worn to dust by humanity shuffling over it. And after I'm long dead, someone will come across my ridiculous collection, and think, who stores dirt in bottles? Maybe they'll dump it out in a big glorious pile, and kick around in it a bit.

[–]kimwim42 4 points5 points ago

That's not weird at all. I collect sand from places friends have gone all over the world, places I'll never get to go to. K2 in Tibet. The sandtrap on the 17th hole at Glen Eagles golf course. The top of Mt. Kilimenjaro. It's like a piece of you were there, or a piece of it came to you. (me). Dust from Mt. St. Helens.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 5 points6 points ago

Funny you mention Mt. St. Helens. I was my first little sample. My Grandfather's war buddy's car's engine got choked with it, and he sent it to him as a joke. And my Grampa gave it to me.

[–]kellyandbryan 6 points7 points ago

You just brought back a memory that I had totally forgotten. As a kid, my aunt sent me a little jar with Mt. St. Helens ash in it, This was like 6 months after it blew. I looked at that ash for years. I had totally forgotten about it until now. I have no idea what happened to it either, It was neat to look at it even though that sounds weird.

[–]Chodges145 2 points3 points ago

I like your story, thanks for telling it.

[–]Speye 0 points1 point ago

You two remind me of this video. People like you make the world more interesting for everyone.

[–]jook11 0 points1 point ago

Maybe they'll dump it out in a big glorious pile, and kick around in it a bit.

This bit made me smile.

[–]wharrislv 0 points1 point ago

I offered him some sand from the Las Vegas Strip. Send me a PM with your address and I'll send the same to you, if you want it.

[–]v13 0 points1 point ago

I wonder how many of us there are? I collect sand.

[–]jshufro 5 points6 points ago

I have some sand from the sahara, morrocco... I'll send you, like, 4 ozs of it, if you want.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

I'd love it! Messaging you.

[–]DragonHunter 3 points4 points ago

PM me with your address and I'll surprise you.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 13 points14 points ago

You sound legit.

[–]AFDIT 4 points5 points ago

barcelona, spain. PM me where it's going.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

Oh my yes. Thank you.

[–]Thatguykalem 2 points3 points ago

I can't send dirt, unfortunately, because I'm in Australia, but I thought you'd find it quite interesting that I'm in possession of two urns from pre-Vesuvius-eruption Pompeii.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

I stand green with envy. How do you store them? I think a prized sample for me, would be from The Kaaba.

[–]cmb2742 3 points4 points ago

How about some Hawaiian sand and/or dirt?!

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 4 points5 points ago

I'd defiantly want it. Better yet, I'll just come there and pick it up. Lord I need some exposure. :D

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 3 points4 points ago

[–]jasontimmur 3 points4 points ago

I think this hobby is cool as hell.

I live in Dubuque, Iowa, the oldest town in Iowa, founded by a fur trapper named Julien Dubuque. I could send you some dirt from my favorite spot in the city, high atop the limestone bluffs overlooking the Mississippi river.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 2 points3 points ago

That sounds wonderful, thank you.

[–]Bobo_dude16 2 points3 points ago

I can try to send you some dirt from Boone Hall Plantation if you want it. It will take a while though. I gotta talk to my friend to see if I can get on sometime soon

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 2 points3 points ago

No rush! I'd love it.

[–]culus_ambitiosa 2 points3 points ago

I could send you some sand from the Jersey shore now-ish, I might be heading down to the site of the Battle of Monmouth this spring if you'd be interested in a jar of dirt from there. And I just can't help but post this and hope it's exactly how you react to each sample you get.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

It will be, swear to dirt. Man alive this is BADASS. Thank you.

[–]16isagreatnumber 2 points3 points ago

Sand from the beaches of Juneau, Alaska.. I could even try to get you glacial sand, though there's a bit of snow on the ground. Could be better in Aprilish?

[–]TheAdoringFan 3 points4 points ago

This is like a side quest in Fallout or something

[–]EveryoneIntoPosition 3 points4 points ago

I live in Israel, would you like some Israeli sand? Tel-Aviv style :)

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

I really, really would.

[–]SgtSloth 2 points3 points ago

I can get you some earth from the Bonneville Salt Flats. It's not like an exotic land, but it's kind of different, and they set all sorts of land speed records out here and film movies there sometimes. It's more salt than dirt.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

I know all about the salt flats! That would be wonderful. Really. I'll message you!

[–]Tgg161 2 points3 points ago

I'll think of a good place in DC I can dig some without getting nabbed by the park police -- do you have a favorite presidential monument? I don't have any contacts at the Pentagon at the moment, otherwise I'd get you some dirt from the center courtyard...

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

I am a nut for American history. If you were to twist my arm, I'd ask for dirt from the entrance of the Holocaust museum. All the feet, man. Thank you so much for whatever you choose.

[–]aigret 2 points3 points ago

Do you want me to go to Alki Beach in Seattle and grab you some sand?

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 2 points3 points ago

Don't go so far out of your way for me. If it comes up, yes, please. I'll send you a message!

[–]ZephyrSong 2 points3 points ago

How about Lubbock, TX king of cotton, cattle, railroad hubs, and Buddy Holly? I'll even try to avoid the feedlot stank in the air of your baggie.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

Wonderful! I don't mind stank, I've dipped a sheep or two. Thank you!

[–]MPinsky 1 point2 points ago

I'll be in Toronto tomorrow, pm me and I'll get you some from the base of the cn tower.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

Thank you so so much.

[–]Mexifro33 0 points1 point ago

Dang, that was going to be my offer. :)

[–]BladeMaster0182 2 points3 points ago

...I thought I was in /r/Minecraft for a moment. God I need to get off Reddit.

[–]_vvvv_ 2 points3 points ago

I live in MD/DC area, would be happy to visit any location within my immediate area for you, or I could just take some from where I live.

[–]chibistarship 2 points3 points ago

I live in San Francisco. If you are interested, I could go to the beach at some point and get some sand for you. As long as the shipping price isn't bad, I'll mail it to you. Tell me if interested.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

If you're close to the Castro, I'd be grateful. Don't spend anything you could spend on something better, your offer is gracious enough. Thank you so much.

[–]Kalgaroo 2 points3 points ago

I know you said you have Ground Zero, but is there anywhere else in New York you want? I could theoretically do Coney Island sand?

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

You know, if ground zero is closer, I'd love more. I have a beautiful vessel for it, and would love to fill it up a bit more. Thank you!

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yes! Thank you!

[–]Krayer 2 points3 points ago

If you'd like some from a location in the Fort Worth area please let me know.

There's a cemetery close by that contains the remains of a fairly well known killer. Also, it's believed that an alien is buried in the same cemetery. They discussed the UFO crash on Ancient Aliens.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

Wow! I'd love some.

[–]interrobangzingkapow 2 points3 points ago*

I would love to send you some from Detroit! But I'm having trouble deciding the best place to collect. Perhaps from the lawn of the abandoned train station? Or from one of the local urban gardens? Or the shores of Belle Isle?

Let me know if you have any requests. If not, I'll consult my fellow Detroiters on their favorite spots :)

[–]cardboardphone 1 point2 points ago

Ideas for Detroit soil:

  • Hart Plaza
  • Renaissance Center (I swear Hoffa is in there)
  • Old Tiger Stadium (I had sand from the infield for several years)
  • Campus Martius
  • Masonic Temple area
  • Belle Isle
  • River Rouge Plant (FULL OF POLLUTION!)

Just a few off the top of my head.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

Anything would be great, I'd really appreciate it.

[–]GeneralMakaveli 0 points1 point ago

I vote Old Tiger Stadium.

[–]ageeksgirl08 2 points3 points ago

I can send you some from Ohio. Our little town is located by what was once the Sandy and Beaver Canal. There's a lot of history here, so I'll send some of that along as well.

[–]nobueno1 2 points3 points ago

It's never a good feeling to have sand in any beavers..

[–]ageeksgirl08 1 point2 points ago

The funny thing is us locals never see to remember the 'and', so it's known as the Sandy Beaver canal. Have to admit, the jokes get a little old. :)

[–]nobueno1 1 point2 points ago

Lol I'm sure :)

[–]ampearce89 2 points3 points ago

would you like some dirt from Gettysburg?

[–]_meraxes 2 points3 points ago

It's probably illegal but I could try and send you some New Zealand sand. From Whangaparaoa (that's fong-a-pa-rho-a, not wang-a-par-oa).

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

Lord, do not get in trouble! (read:yes please.)

[–]johnpowell 2 points3 points ago

I live near Ken Kesey's old house in Pleasant Hill, Oregon. I have access so if you send me your info I can send some dirt from his old flowerbed.

[–]Cpt_Mango 2 points3 points ago

Pm me: I have some 12myo volcanic ash

edit: I writes weirds

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oh Cpt Mango! Thank you!

[–]Speye 2 points3 points ago

I can send you dirt/sand from Fiji, but, not sure which is the best way to ship it without it getting flagged by customs or quarantine or something.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

You know, I imagine if you just tape it up really well it wouldn't be a thing, but certainly, if it doesn't feel right, don't think twice about it. The offer is very generous. I'll send my address in case, thanks.

[–]Speye 0 points1 point ago

Please send your address. I'm sure there must be a legal way to do so, and I will attempt to find out.

[–]VIJoe 0 points1 point ago

I'm in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands and we have plenty of sand to spare if you'd like a little.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

As long as it doesn't tip anything over, I'd really like some.

[–]Scrotums 2 points3 points ago

Every time i go on holiday I do something similar. On the last night i walk down to the local beach, have a bottle of beer then fill the bottle with sand to bring home. I've got Turkish, Mexican, Greek, South African all sorts. Fast forward a couple of years and my sister (aged 13 or 14 at the time) is spending a holiday in Israel while my father is working in Tel Aviv. Unknown to my parents she decided to bring her big brother a Gift in the form of a bottle of beer she some how procured filled with sand from the beach. She didn't tell my parents about my gift and just stuffed it in her suitcase.

When time came to leave the country her bag went through the scanner alarms went off and they were quickly surrounded by armed guards. She sparked a massive bomb scare at the airport which resulted in them missing their flight and getting some pretty bad treatment from security services (threatening my sister with jail etc).

TL:DR Don't smuggle sand out of Israel

To the OP ill dig out my collection and pm you with what ive got.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

Awww...poor girl. She loves her brother. Flipside, not a lot of people can say they shutdown an airport. Feel free to surprise me, all of it sounds just wonderful, thank you, Scrotums.

[–]FallingUp727 2 points3 points ago

Hey man if you see this.. I am in Cyprus now until June then I will be in Poland till mid July. I can get you some sand from Ayia Napa when I visit there. I would be able to bring it home to the States and mail it to you probably. I really like the idea and might bring back some for myself too.

Edit: I am also traveling all over Cyprus so if there is anywhere else. Maybe some from the Buffer Zone in the last remaining divided capital? There is a lot of history here and I will be seeing all the big spots so let me know.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

SEND ALL THE DIRT!

[–]Curll 1 point2 points ago

I could get you some dirt from Lexington and Concord

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

Oh my yes. I love this kind of history.

[–]carbanm 2 points3 points ago

I live in truth or consequences, new mexico, if youd like some desert dirt!

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

I really do! One of the best city names, ever.

[–]millioneyed 2 points3 points ago*

I will send you some dirt if you send me a rock. I've never travelled, but I have rocks from around the world and I'd like to return them all someday.

EDIT: If anyone else wants to send a rock my way, that'd be flippin' nifty.

[–]SirWinstonFurchill 0 points1 point ago

I can send you something from the shores of Lake Michigan, from one of the larger WPA projects in the Midwest if you want...

[–]spritle6054 1 point2 points ago

Fun fact I learned recently, here in Ohio only sedimentary rocks are naturally found. Any igneous or metamorphic rocks were brought in by glaciers.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

You bet I'll send you a rock.

[–]roderpol 0 points1 point ago

PM Address - I'll send rocks.

[–]cblaines 2 points3 points ago

I have a couple of buddies who do work on and around the launchpads at Kennedy Space Center. If you're interested I'll ask if they can take baggies of stuff without getting arrested haha.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

I'm very interested. I went there as a kid. I swear, seeing the grooves in the pavement from the thing that moves the shuttles as a little kid, blew my mind. No arrests, please. This never happened. Yes it did.

[–]Teeman276 2 points3 points ago

Would you be interested in sand from The Twelve Apostles in Victoria, Australia?

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

Oh yes I would be. Thank you.

[–]ladymolotov 1 point2 points ago

Can I send you sand from my kindergarten sandbox in Germany?? There may even be a child feces bonus.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

Feces free sandbox sand? What am I a monster? Of course I'll have it!

[–]Saydrah 2 points3 points ago

Send me your info and next time I go to the Continental Divide I'll get you some dirt from there :)

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 0 points1 point ago

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!

[–]ObscureSaint 1 point2 points ago

PM me an address. I have a bag full of Oolitic Sand from the Great Salt Lake. It's cool stuff.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

I certainly will!

[–]Rowsncrantz 1 point2 points ago

There's a park down the street from me called "dog shit park", how'd you like a small scoop from Santa Barbara, California?

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

I'd like an order of Santa Barbara park dirt. Light on the poop, please.

[–]bsweany 1 point2 points ago

I'd like to send you some down home country Kansas dirt!

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 2 points3 points ago

And I'd love to get it! Thank you very much.

[–]jjamessmithh 1 point2 points ago

I can get dirt from the grave of Duane Allman from the Allman Brothers Band.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

Oh yes. Yes yes yes.

[–]Bonzooy 1 point2 points ago

I live near Lexington MA. I can get some from Lexington common. This is the place where the "shot heard 'round the world" (beginning of the American Revolutionary War) occurred. I actually live near a bunch of historically significant places. I could also get some from the sand in front of the Old North Bridge or something (really anything in the area). No guarantees, I'm busy these days. But I'll see what I can do if you want it.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

No pressure! I'll send my address, and if it comes up, id love it! Thank you.

[–]Fauxbidden 1 point2 points ago

What is the smallest amount you have? Is it in a tiny jar? What is the biggest amount you have? Do you use glass jars so you can see the dirt? Which is your favorite? Least favorite?

Is your nickname Pigpen? "Charlie Brown: Don't think of it as dust. Think of it as maybe the soil of some great past civilization. Maybe the soil of ancient Babylon. It staggers the imagination. He may be carrying soil that was trod upon by Solomon, or even Nebuchudnezzar. Pig-Pen: Sort of makes you want to treat me with more respect, doesn't it?"

Just wondering.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 2 points3 points ago

The smallest amount I have is two pea sized rocks from Annapolis. Those sit alone, no jar. My favorite...I have a square cookie jar, that seals tight. For almost 15 years straight, at least one member of my family went to Hilton Head SC to vacation. Each time, a bottle of ocean water was brought back, and a bit was put in this jar. When it started to evaporate, someone would be by with a bottle of sea water. After a while, sand began to collect at the bottom, along with tiny shells, sticks and whatnot. I love all of it dearly, but the circumstances aren't all pleasant. This Peanuts quote is perfect. I must incorporate it.

[–]Fauxbidden 1 point2 points ago

Thanks for being interesting! Glad you liked the quote. I knew I would have a place to put it one day. (I collect quotes.)

[–]NonAnonAlternate 1 point2 points ago

I've got Tennessee dirt/clay and some beach sand from Georgetown Island, Maine (much different and better than Florida sand. I was born and raised in the Broward/Dade county areas and it's pretty much just granules while the beach sand in Maine has bits of shells and quartz and everything in it). PM me an address to send it to and I'll get some out to you on my next trip to the post office.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 1 point2 points ago

Thank you so much. The visual difference is part of the excitement for me. It gives me an opportunity to troll thrift stores for ideal bottles.

[–]Siriann 1 point2 points ago

I can get you some from the beaches around Boston. Unfortunately, they're (basically) giant ashtrays.

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 3 points4 points ago

Bostonians, or the beaches? Yes please.

[–]Siriann 2 points3 points ago

Both, but the beaches more so.

[–]sicilianhotdog 1 point2 points ago

I live in Boston, so I have a bunch of places I could go! Boston Harbor, Lexington/Concord for Civil War stuff, as well as Bunker Hill, I may even be able to swing Fenway Park...

I could also hit P-town, the tip of Cape Cod, and the eastermost part of the state, right up against the atlantic!

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 4 points5 points ago

Wow. Whatever you want! Or, just the tip. Thank you so much!

[–]thebeegirl 1 point2 points ago

You like American history? I'm in Massachusetts. Let me know if you have a request. I have an idea for a surprise, too.

[–]PauseBack 1 point2 points ago

Would you like some from Upstate NY?

[–]Cannedbeans[S] 2 points3 points ago

You better believe it. I'll send my addy, and thank you very much! Wow.

[–]stilesjp[!] 0 points1 point ago

I collect spores, molds, and fungus.

[–]macnwars 1 point2 points ago

do you have any north carolina red clay?

[–]jiddic 0 points1 point ago

I collect sand as well!

[–]SpottedMe 1 point2 points ago

I could probably spare some P.E.I. red sand if you're interested.

I live in san antonio & am off pretty much all of next week. I'm going to call and ask if it's possible to take a sample of dirt from the grounds. Would you like dirt from the Alamo? (if they say no, I'll try one of the other missions here in town)

[–]ANAL_PLUNDERING 1 point2 points ago

I live in Virginia. We go to beaches from time to time like Virginia Beach but we also go to North Carolina beaches (better) like Nags Head. It is winter so I can not get any time soon but if you are interested let me know.

BTW my high school marine bio teacher did this exact thing. She had sands from all over the world and her students would bring her back sands from Hawaii or Florida or wherever they went. She brought them in once so we could look at them under a microscope. I really liked her black and pink sands!

[–]Shepy 1 point2 points ago

I'm off to Holy Island this weekend, if you'd like some from the UK.

[–]TrevelyanPanda 1 point2 points ago

PM me your address, when I get a chance I will go on a dirt raid :)

[–]Krastain 1 point2 points ago

I could send you some of the most fertile soil in the world, but it's coming from the other side of the world.

[–]jdola 1 point2 points ago

You will probley never get to mine way down here, however Ill still extend the offer. I live in Orlando, Fl. Disney Epcot ect. are options. Daytona beach is close, Kennedy space center is not to far and I goto Tampa often. If any sound good let me know. Willing to travel a bit

[–][deleted] ago

[–]dangerssnake 1 point2 points ago

I'll have to look to see if I have any extras left, but I picked up a few pebbles and a bit of dirt from Pompeii.

I can send you some from Saint John, NB. Message me details and I'll send you a photo of where it came from too if you want. (everything is covered in snow, but I'm sure I can find some dirt)

I still have my jar from white sands, NM. It's about 15 years old at this point..wow. And the sand has started to lose it's "whiteness". lol

I'm close to Chicago, would you want some from around this area? Anywhere in particular?

I can get you sand from Laguna Beach if you really want. I would need a picture of your collection though...

[–]winkandclick 1 point2 points ago

If you are willing to wait a bit for spring I'd be happy to get you some from various mountains in Colorado. We do lots of hiking/backpacking so I can definitely get some cool ones! :)

[–]Morrigane 0 points1 point ago

PM if you would like some dirt from Max Patch . I'll be there in about a month.

[–]SirWinstonFurchill 0 points1 point ago

This is AMAZING! I love it! I think this might be something fun to start doing.

I live on the shores of Lake Michigan, near Milwaukee, and can get you sand from where an old mill stood :3

Not really all that cool, but I'd be happy to add to your collection. I may have a bottle of sand from the Great Abaco (larger) Island in the Bahamas - my husband has family down there!

I can get you Google maps pinpoint of the locations, too - in fact, that might be kind of a cool way to share everywhere you have sands from with the rest of Reddit.

I live in Hawaii and could send ya some sand from a couple beaches here.. Could send you sand from fort hasse beach on the Marine Corps base, sand from Lanikai Beach (rated in the top 10 beaches in America), sand from Sunset Beach (where they hold all surfing competitions) and if I ever make it to the big island I could send you volcanic ash..

When I was younger I started to do this, but stopped cause forgot about it. But I'd put the sand in the mini liquor bottles, and put some ocean water on top of it.. Turned out pretty cool :-)
