The "why" doesn't really bother me since I found out about www.youtube.com/joindota

[–]nasaboy007 5 points6 points ago

Exactly. I would wrestle with the owned3d player, but I found that they were all on youtube as well, and so I just watch it there. Youtube also has better processing servers, so the HD versions get up sooner than they do for owned3d (especially if a VOD was just uploaded).

[–]jmachol[S] 3 points4 points ago

Thank you for this!

They should have embedded youtube VoDs rather than Own3d on their site. Would be neat.

[–]ReaverXai altelfonzi 4 points5 points ago

Probably due to sponsorship with own3d with so much of their shit. Personally I will run that while im not watching then just watch it on youtube so that ad revenue and own3d views still go for them.

[–]Classic™ReaverXai 2 points3 points ago

Nah, they said they were redesigning it, probably will use the youtube clips and be searchable/organized

[–]Morawka -3 points-2 points ago

Youtube has tons and tons of ads, own3d doesnt have that many

[–]8e8 0 points1 point ago

Beautiful. The reason for own3d embeds is because they sponsor The Defense.

[–]mishsquish 1 point2 points ago

Exactly this. Own3d.tv player is seriously, seriously unfinished and I'm really not sure why they haven't paid attention to it considering they're a fricken video service provider. One might imagine it's quite a deal breaker if you want to actually watch said videos.

Twitch all the way for me, I live in Southern California, so that may be a factor, but I never have any problems viewing livestreams nor do I have problems (or perhaps as many) with the VoD player. There's always room for improvement but Twitch appears to be much more willing to listen to feedback and make improvements. Not to mention Twitch also appears to be more supportive of their community as a whole with promoting interesting streams and tournaments, while own3d does support JoinDota, which is cool, they've had so many problems for months. Here's to hoping for improvement, though.

[–]Morawka -4 points-3 points ago

Twitch lags like hell if there are over 50 viewers. They use the cheapest leased bandwidth provider they can find.

[–]REIGNx777 0 points1 point ago

I liked the part where you backed up your claims with facts.

[–]Morawka 0 points1 point ago

I could spend a hour doing MTR's on different twitch streams and show you the nodes, but honestly I dont have the time, that's something twitch needs to do.

I did do a mtr when the premier league 1st started and i was lagging. I got bounces from cogent servers which are notoriously known for sub-par service.

Personally, I like these providers - Level3, Savvis, GBLX, nLayer. Telia, PCCW, and NTT are also good for routes to Europe/Asia. HE are have very good value and service, who I'd consider superior to Cogent in many respects.

The Premier League casted by Luminius is notorious for lag. even 480p. lol. They have admitted the problems and are currently working on fixing them. I dont have a preference, but i just dont want tons of lag when i'm streaming.

[–]ICarrotU 0 points1 point ago

As I said, I have literally never had a problem with Twitch. I know they are based in San Francisco, CA and I'm pretty close to Los Angeles, so that could very well be a factor.

[–]PashaB 3 points4 points ago

What really bugs me is that this has been a problem for so long. Why haven't they fixed it? They have so many important streams and enough money to fix bugs. Why haven't they? I know if we complained this much about twitch, someone from twitch would come here and actually comment and try to get it fixed. Own3d has horrible community communication and maintenance.

[–]syndikat 1 point2 points ago

Indeed, it's really fucking annoying. Thanks for bringing it up!

Edit; I havn't read enough to know if you guys are already aware, but if you pause and it starts a new instance, make sure you have popups enabled on the site, because it took me a while to figure out where the new vod was, and I had to restart it all over so I could get rid of the double sound

[–]N9-GoDz 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, twitch is far better in most aspects

[–]ShinCoal 4 points5 points ago

To some people here saying that Own3d should be dropped in favour for Twitch:

The big problem is that Own3d/Twitch will always divide casters/communities.

I know Own3d has shitty ass VOD's, but appearantly the streams differ heavily on your location, I know some people who say Twitch is the better streaming website, while I and multiple other people I know hate Twitch because the Streams give a horrible amount of lag when the stream hits more than a couple of thousand streams (mostly around 5000+ it starts fucking around).

Yes the Own3d VODs suck, but it's not like people are going to purely use Twitch as long as a lot of people have lag issues with that website.

[–]DarkTwist 4 points5 points ago

Twitch has actually implemented something to fix that lag.

Here is a link to the email they sent out to all the broadcasters on the 27th. Hopefully this solves all the issues you have.

[–]ruchn 2 points3 points ago

Can anyone confirm/deny that there actually isn't lag with large audiences on Twitch? Because if there isn't, I'd love to see an exodus from Own3d.

[–]kjaonline 0 points1 point ago

I'm from the Philippines and can view 720p+ on Twitch with no problems at all. Ownedtv lags at 360p for me.

[–]FeverRay 0 points1 point ago

And anyway it's always better to have companies competing with each other rather then monopoly.

[–]Shawn_Spenstar 0 points1 point ago

I have all the same issues as you, owned3tv is trash i have no idea why tobi and joindota use it, that being said go to joindotas youtube page its already linked in here, its updated a hour hours after the joindota site.

[–]Fen_ 5 points6 points ago

own3d is actually really good for streamers in a lot of ways, but the way they handle vods is pretty bad. You guys should send them feedback through the site. I've reported bugs before and gotten really quick and detailed responses. They're pretty good about customer service.

[–]DukeEsquire 2 points3 points ago

99.9% sure because Ow3d sponsors them.

[–]ruchn 0 points1 point ago

But do they sponsor all the other users? I wouldn't mind if Tobi was the only one now that he's on youtube (thanks, Tobi or whoever else chose to do this!), it's the others that annoy me. They probably do have an agreement with Na'Vi, though...

[–]MHighbrow 1 point2 points ago

Sponsorship, I'm sure.

[–]brict 1 point2 points ago

Same issues, also on chrome, haven't found any way around it.

[–]GuidedKamikaze 1 point2 points ago

I once watched what a lot of people were calling an epic match through ownedtvs vods. It froze at 50 minutes of 1:15 minutes and I never got to see the end of that game, a waste of 50 minutes.

Never again.

[–]Aldrenean 1 point2 points ago

Most of the problems with own3d vods stem from embedding. If you click the own3d.tv logo in the bottom right it will take you to that video on own3d itself, which doesn't have the double video problem (by far the most annoying one.)

But yeah, the youtube channel is even better. .^

[–]bsterling604 1 point2 points ago

man, i feel you, i have a debug flash player installed on my system for my own development and i'm constantly riddled with null pointer exceptions and errors that are being thrown that normal users without a debugger installed on their system will see. Just goes to show how absolutely shit the own3d player is.

[–]This makes me very angryTrowter123 0 points1 point ago

I think owned streaming is a LOT better, for some reason I cant watch one Twitch stream at 720P (this happens to a lot of people I know) on Owned, I can open like 3 streams at once all at 720P, no lag

Sure the VODs are a little buggy...but the twitch streaming is terrible.

[–]Werke -3 points-2 points ago

The streams are fine so people below that mention own3d as a whole sucks are idiots.

The VoDs, well before they started upping them all to Youtube I would either make sure to be there for the stream or just try and forget a match ever happened

[–]Belegurth -3 points-2 points ago

i have the same issues owned sucks

[–]Soon I'll choose a queenBilgeXA -2 points-1 points ago

Because they're a streaming service.
