Have you tried just walking around with him for the 5 minutes? You could try getting strict and not letting him come inside if he hasn't poo'd and you know he is going to.

Totally agree, assuming there's someone outside with the dog. If it's an "open the door to let the dog out by himself" situation, I'd start going outside with him on leash and staying there until he's finished.

Reward him/her immediately after they've done the deed.

My boston terrier does this, but he got over it by me going outside and watching him go. I just tell him to "hurry up" or "go" and point at the trees, he runs back out and finishes his business.

Does he get rewarded with a treat when he comes in? My dog's been known to split up potty breaks for more treats. We'll usually only verbally reward him the 2nd time. This is a rare occurrence though.

My dog does this, and it drives me bonkers. I think I'm going to try the you don't come in till you've done both situation.
