A Rhino spearing a sword fish in battle? If you couldn't see it, you wouldn't believe it lol!

[–]Darthfuzzy 19 points20 points ago

There's also a dead one on the ground.

[–]cerebralscrub44 15 points16 points ago

they're actually both on floating platforms; the dead one is on the platform opposite the rhino

[–]Darthfuzzy 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It's dead on the ground of the floating platform ;)

I just see a big mess. I just figured out how to do it for the first time ever but I only see squiggles and cut out shapes :(

[–]clarkster 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

If you are seeing cut out shapes, it could be you are crossing your eyes. (focal point in front of the image) Try moving your focal point to behind the image to invert the 3d effect.

[–]3dimka 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Also try crosseyed stereograms, you should see them correctly

[–]Darthfuzzy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It honestly takes a few tries to get it right. Normally if you put your nose in the center and pull back VERY slowly, and if you think you're unfocused move back in a little, it will eventually rear its epic 3D face. I remember when I first did them I only saw a basic outline...

[–]TheAfterPipe 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Basically relax your eyes so that they aren't focusing on the same object, but draw two objects together. Kinda like crossing your eyes, but the opposite. if you cross your eyes, it has the same effect as looking at a negative image.(o ) . ( o)

[–]SharpieWatchAshtray 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Bah, what I was going to say. It goes into the background and is slightly harder to see, I think. The proper way is the opposite, as stated. It makes it pop out in glorious 3D!!!

I've never been more sad about my inability to see these.

[–]momster 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

The best advice is to look past the picture. Like you're daydreaming.

Pretend you're looking at an object several feet behind the picture, then relax and let your eyes go out of focus like you're daydreaming.

[–]ExFiler 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Actually...I have the best results crossing my eyes and relaxing til the picture comes together...

I actually never heard about autostereograms before, but after reading the Wikipedia article and practicing the technique with this picture, I can see the rhino/sword fish battle quite easily.

I still believe this whole hidden image thing is a big joke being played on me. There's nothing there.

EDIT: I tried making an edit before saying I can see them now and it's so awesome. Today is the first day ever. I'm 24. I've tried many times. The thing about putting your nose up to it and moving back is rubbish. That doesn't work for me. Just look beyond it.

[–]Tim-Tim 2 points3 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I kept going through more of them and I stopped being able to see them. For many many of them. Then I'd get a few in a row, then I couldn't look beyond, and then I'd get an IM and I couldn't even read anything right. My vision was messed up for a good half hour after stopping trying stereograms for the night.

Floaters don't make them any easier.

EDIT: I just went back to the one I gave up on earlier and got it pretty quickly. I laugh when I get some of them cuz it's so trippy. I tried talking to my friend about how awesome it is, but he was all "welcome to 1990" :|

EDIT II: Now I'm getting them within seconds. This one is pretty.

[–]Tim-Tim 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Exactly. I could do lots of them up to this one, but my eyes can't seem to relax on this one and I keep blinking and focusing on the image instead of beyond it. Maybe this'll be the one I stop on for the night.

EDIT: I got it. Not worth it. Those are frustrating, too. When you finally get it and it's not worth it. Am I too old to go to the library and check out some of these books? :-[

[–]PhilxBefore 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Morter and Pestle?

If you are having trouble with some of them, right-click and select 'View Image', then ctrl+scrollwheel up to make them bigger. That way you don't have any distractions on the page.

[–]Tim-Tim 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Yup. Real pretty.

[–]JohnDoe06 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I still can't see them. I'm seeing is a silhouette of something and I have to guess what it is from its shape.

[–]DWells55 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is pretty aggravating. I can sort of do the crosseyed thing, but instead everything is recessed into the image instead of coming out of it. Makes it near impossible to see any details greater than an outline. "Look past it" doesn't help either - I can focus on a point further away than the screen. Maybe if I had a transparent screen or something.

[–]amblyopic 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

you need stereo vision to be able to see the image

[–]sheltonn 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I was trolled. :/

[–]limitedability 20 points21 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I can. It's a rhino standing on a platform with a swordfish coming at it. Can't tell if the swordfish is getting speared by the rhino's horn or not as previously stated (they just look like they're in each other's face), but there's a smaller platform in the foreground with what appears to be an incapacitated second swordfish on it.

edit: cool site. this one is motherfucking animated: http://hidden-3d.com/index.php?id=gallery&pk=96

[–]SICSICSEZ 1 point2 points ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Looked to me like the remaining swordfish was having a sword fight with the rhino's horn.

Edit: Holy crap! Just looked at the animated one. That was amazing.

[–]limitedability 4 points5 points ago

I know, after seeing the animated one I was thinking, "fuck 3D glasses" -- then again if this went mainstream it'd only be viewable by like 10% of the public. :P

it goes through a hallway past two spinning pillars with gears on them, past that a ball goes flying up through a trap door in the ceiling, past that a door opens and you see the spinning pillar gears again. after typing it, it seems like im making this up and if i was unable to see these i'd be really frustrated

[–]RetepNamenots 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh WOW!

In all my years I have never been able to see these before, but that's right!!

I don't see any trap door - the ball appears to be a mine-shaped object which rises up from a spike coming out of the floor. The image is basically moving through different rooms around a ring anti-clockwise!

I can see them clear as day. Then again I've been looking at them since I was like 5...

Also, protip: Put your nose up against the monitor/image, and slowly pull your face away while staring at the same spot. After a few seconds, your brain will adjust to what you're supposed to be looking at and you can move your eyes and see the image clear as day.

[–]spilk 20 points21 points ago

I just cross my eyes a bit until it all falls into place. seems to work for me.

[–]bdfortin 4 points5 points ago

Crossing your eyes shows the image reversed, or "inside-out". The image should pop out, not in.

[–]Darthfuzzy 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This. Also, I can't force my eyes to cross with out staring and pulling back, the pulling back forces my eyes to cross and IMHO easier to see the image :)

[–]lolipopfailure 5 points6 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I've never been able to see these images. I went back and tried the protip (which I remember trying as a kid to no avail) and still nothing. I'm not special enough to see the hidden image.

Whoa!!!! just did it as you said and saw it for the first time! MIND BLOWN.

That's pretty damn cool!

[–]bodanger 0 points1 point ago

I just had the same experience. I immediately felt like dormant parts of my mind had activated. I realized that if I could make two dots connect with each other, I might be able to see it. Once I did, my mind started doing the rest. It was incredible.

I couldnt see them when I was young. However when I was in highschool I was in a JROTC program. In order to keep bearing during inspections we would look through people. Now I can focus my eyes on something in the distance quite easily.

[–]Darthfuzzy 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

:D Most people just don't know the trick. My grandfather showed it to me really young. I love it when I see people going WTF I CANT SEE IT and I show them how to do it. The brain is a marvelous thing.

[–]gameforge 8 points9 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I have a lazy eye. Both eyes see perfectly but are never aligned together; my brain had to learn to drop one of the two images before it lets me "see" the other one. Thus I can willfully choose which eye to use, but I can never process both images at once. If you've ever seen something "out of the corner of your eye", that's about all of the information I get from whichever eye I'm not currently using.

So is this hopeless for me, or am I just like all of the other people who can't see it, and am just not focusing quite right?

[–]amblyopic 4 points5 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Most (/all) people who can't see stereograms can't see them because of vision problems. I have the same issue as you (amblyopia, aka lazy eye). Vision therapy can correct it at any age, but it takes work. College of Optometrists in Vision Development. Also, see my other posts, they tend to get downvoted to hell. Apparently a furry cat warrants 1000 up votes but a post on lazyeye gets none.

[–]gameforge 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Thanks for the info, I've never even known the medical name for it or anything else about it. I had a surgery when I was very young because I was born cross-eyed, with the muscles in my now-lazy eye actually being too tight. That was 24 years ago, and I've wondered a lot recently if new developments could help me. But while growing up my parents & doctor told me that nothing more could be done about it, nothing practical anyway... I'll look into it myself now.

As for downvotes, I have gotten just as frustrated as you about it. I've been participating a lot less on reddit lately, and on the rest of the "social Internet" for even longer. The SNR here anymore is terrible. Frequently only perhaps one in a hundred comments for a submission are of any value whatsoever. Even the smaller subreddits now are getting thick with inconsiderate/snarky jerks and trolls.

Most of the submissions aren't what they say they are, and even the somewhat good submissions are just rehashed click-spam.

That said, again, thank you for the information, I was really surprised to get replies from people with the same/a similar problem, and definitely didn't expect to learn anything new about it.

[–]asanisimasa 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I used not to be able to see them - now I'm older and my vision is not so good I can see them. Previously I found it impossible to defocus, my eyes would snap into focus on the screen/page/poster rather than the false depth of the image. Now I find (probably due to years of screen use) that my eyes will defocus and that I can now see these things.

You do need 2 eyes to be focussing on the wrong depth though so yes a lazy eye would ruin it.

No, i mean take them off and lean forward. My eyes were -9.5 and -10.5 (i.e., forget fingernails; it's more like, "hand? what hand?") when I first learned that taking my glasses off and bringing my face right up into the stereogram was the key to learning how to see the 3-D image.

I don't think so. If you look at the "regular" kind cross-eyed, the image is concave where it should be convex.

[–]DDme 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is why they all look shit to me, I can cross my eyes inwards but when I try to cross them outwards I just look like a psycho.

[–]fallenangel42 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

There are two types; the most common ones are 'view through', where you're focusing on a point behind the image. Others are designed to be seen by focusung on a point in front of the screen - these are the ones that require going cross-eyed. The first type rely more on 'seeing double' at will; Imagine looking at two dots. Now make yourself see double so there are four dots. Now adjust your focus so that the middle two dots are on top of each other - nothing to do with going cross eyed.

If you view using the wrong method, you see a 'negative' of the image you are meant to see, i.e. convex and concave are reversed.

Also, some view-through stereograms can be viewed through twice - you see two different images by focusing in two different ways. As you shift your focus to see the first image, so you shift your focus again in the same way from this focus to see the second image.

Man, I love these things! It's actually called an autostereogram, not a stereogram. I can usually see them within a second or two, though some require me to use the technique DarthFuzzy pointed out where you hold the picture to your nose and slowly pull it back.

[–]3dimka 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I know there's article on wikipedia, but nobody really calls them autostereograms. Stereogram is a common term for many 3D images. This type is also known is Single Image Stereogram.

[–]forrestparkay 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Well, strictly speaking, a stereogram is viewed with a stereoscope. A lot of people say octopi and irregardless, too, and that doesn't make it correct.

[–]3dimka 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You can easily view stereogram (a stereo pair) without stereoscope, same as autostereogram.

[–]forrestparkay 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Oh really? I didn't know that. Thanks!

I guess it makes sense though. All a stereograph does is force your eyes to focus independently, which is basically what you do with that faraway glassy-eyed stare at an autostereogram.

Partly colorblind. I have never seen anything but random lines.

I have no idea if this is the reason, but the colors tend to be near those which make me fail color-blindness tests.

[–]AgentConundrum 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

This is pretty much how I feel, too. I never knew I was colorblind until about two years ago or so, and even now I'm not sure. There was a picture of some of those circles that form numbers for non-colorblind people and I only really got the one that everyone can supposedly see and a bit of one other. I even sent it to my friend to see if it was a joke (I found it on 4chan of all places) and he could read them all just fine.

It's amazing how long someone can go without realizing they're colorblind. I knew I always had issues properly identifying certain colors but ever realized the extent of it.

My brother-in-law has a calender with these 3d images and at Christmas I tried it and, as usual, failed horribly. It was just then that I put two and two together and came up with the theory that I can't see them because of colorblindness.

[–]coppersink 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

You need to 'look through' them. To focus on a point in the distance - as if there is a distant object on the horizon and there just happens to ne this image in the way.

I see a rhino high-fiveing a sword fish on a floating rock while another sword fish sleeps. They high-five with their noses.

[–]cerebralscrub44 1 point2 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Protip: Have you ever spaced out? Just stared off into the distance, not really looking at anything in particular? When this happens, whatever is in your field of vision should start blurring and becoming two identical images, slowly moving apart from one another. Try it with your finger, first: just hold your finger about a foot away from your face and space out, so it becomes two fingers. This is exactly how stereograms work; you have to space out when looking at them.

I used to not be able to see them at all, until somebody finally taught me the proper way to look at them. At least with the kind you posted, OP, I used to think you had to cross your eyes and get close, or something, but really you just unfocus your eyes for a while. I can kinda give myself double-vision at will... it's hard to describe. So after about 30 seconds of staring like that, the 3d-ish image pops out, and I can refocus my eyes and look around the pic.

[–]lowenheim 2 points3 points ago

I'm red-green colour blind and can see them. In fact, you can make stereograms grayscale and still see them in 3D. It has to do with your ability to force your eyes to focus and point in slightly unnatural ways rather than your ability to see colour.

[–]Brittsmac 0 points1 point ago

Lotsa men do but I am not sure it is about color or more spatial stufffs. :) Other note, at work they decided to color code things and people were biatchaing like crazy for an actual silly system (you would have to work there to know how inane it was). One guy was going off and I just told him to tell them he is color blind. He is a good guy and didn't but it would have been funny. But, bottom line is, yes, many men are color blind......hence many mismatched outfits but I digress and now will get the wrath of the males lol. All in good fun guys :)

I laughed when they decided to repaint the offices last year. Everyone looked at me like I was crazy when I asked who wanted to pick out the color for my office in the meeting. I can't help it that I only see a handful of colors amongst the samples.

I'm open with my deficiency at work but I still got picked for web development work from the IT team and I always have to get someone to verify that my blending/gradients look fine.

i've actually never looked at one on a computer screen until this post and i find these especially easy to see for some reason.

I've only seen one before, because it had the little dots on it that you need to match up.

Also, I think you mean a single-image random-dot stereogram, because stereogram on its own could imply two seperate images side-by-side that you can cross/unfocus your eyes and see clearly as a single image with full color information.

[–]a3_nm 0 points1 point ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

It took me some time to find out how to see these. I'll try to explain how I think it works, in the hope that it might help others.

The first step is staring at a point which would be some distance behind the display. Autostereograms are almost periodic, so you need to trick your brain into adjusting your eyes with an offset of one occurrence of the period. The important thing is that this only works with the stereogram, and that you should not look at the borders lest your find yourself looking at the rest of the page at which point your brain would directly revert to its normal way of seeing things. To get your brain to adjust correctly, you should try, while staring at something behind the screen, to pay attention to what is going on at the stereogram level, and try to look at a point which is closer or further to the screen in order to reach the one period offset in the stereogram.

At this point, you should begin to see something happening at the stereogram level, but it should still be blurry. Resist the urge to look at it, or it will vanish. Instead, keep staring at the point behind the screen, but try to adjust. The problem here is that your brain thinks you are looking at something behind the screen, and makes your lens adjust as if the object you're staring at were behind your screen, which makes the stereogram blurry because it is too close. You can override that, but it isn't easy. The hard part is that you need to keep your eyes staring at the same point while focusing with your lens.

While you're doing that, you may find that you have to start over when you blink. This can be corrected, but it takes some training. Likewise, training will make you able to move your eye around and look at the borders of the image without getting distracted by what is beyond, or move your head around and see how it affects your vision of the hidden image.

Once you become used to autostereograms, you will find that several periodic images can be seen as stereograms. When you look at one of those, there is no hidden image, but you still get a weird effect if you stare at them and move your head around slightly.

I don't know what to say. There is a trick and you just have to learn how to focus at them with your eyes. I find I pull everything out of focus while trying to look past it. I know that makes no sense to someone who hasnt done it. But once it works it clicks.

I use to sit at my friends house and just stare at the book of them he had. And one day I just got it. And now they are pretty easy to see.

So perseverance is the biggest tip I can give if you want to see them.
