Lol - Sorry if that came across as weird. My ISP already caps the top 5% percent of bandwidth users and sends letters to those it thinks are using it for illegal stuff, not taken action so far however. I know cause I got a letter once myself about a year ago. 10TB can't all be legal :P

And communism is a good idea, in theory.

hmmmn... Very much depends on what tracker. Open trackers like when downloading from thepiratebay: No seeding. A private tracker where I want to stay a member of (like what): Hell yeah, I seed.

dmalice -4 points-3 points 4 months ago[-]

yeah, definitely. Private communities are amazing and I seed because I appreciate the community and want to contribute, especially since it is incredibly difficult to get into some of the private trackers i'm on, and i enjoy being an active member of those communities. Plus private trackers will ban for hit-and-runs, and will punish poor ratios Couldn't care less on public trackers. I crank max upload down to 1KB/s while downloading, and then delete as soon as it's done

krelian 11 points12 points 4 months ago[-]

Tl;DR If no one sets and enforces some rules people will continue being selfish assholes.

What's new?

jarh1000 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

i got kicked off ip torrents for not seeding enough... its mad unfair its not like i didnt try to. its just no one wanted the stuff i'd downloaded.

butidigress 2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]

PROTIP: Download scene release from other sources, then seed on the tracker of your choice.

Andybaby1 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Iptorrents are stupidly easy to keep a ratio, they have a Points into Upload credit system.

If you just seeded 20 torrents for a few days you could have bought 50+ gigs of upload credit

InfinityMinusOne 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Nice point. Why did you get downvoted?

dissidentrhetoric 11 points12 points 4 months ago[-]

here we go, asshole like you that make public trackers slow.

[deleted] 4 months ago[-]

[deleted]

whitesilence 2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]

This is why public trackers suck.

Raddict 6 points7 points 4 months ago[-]

  • Total Uploaded: 1.03 TB
  • Total Downloaded: 440 GB
  • Total Ratio: 2.400

On public trackers. Sharing is caring. Peace out!

braaaains 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I'd suggest quitting while you're ahead. public trackers are not smart to seed.

Raddict 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

What do you mean by that?

braaaains 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Companies that track P2P have easiest access to public trackers, since they're available to anyone (durr). They have the highest number of people using them, so that's where they start.

If you download a lot on public trackers you can get caught. If you seed a lot on public trackers you WILL get caught. Seeders are their #1 target since they are the distributors.

My advice: Don't feel bad you are not giving back to the public. Let the others take the fall for you. Or, get on a private torrent site. Demonoid invites are decently common. However, it's not 100% private since they hold a few open sign-ups here and there, but it's better than piratebay, torrentz, etc.

Raddict 2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]

Well, luckily I live in Finland.

There haven't been a single case here where a user was caught through a software which uses torrent protocol. Anti-pirates in Finland only lurk in DirectConnect-type networks, because the current legislation makes it so hard to prove illegal file-sharing which takes place using torrent protocol.

braaaains 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

ahhh I see. That definitely changes things. I'm from the US so I gotta watch my back ;D

tupidflorapope 6 points7 points 4 months ago[-]

(puts on mask so no one recognizes identity)

Yep. sorry. :-(

Malabo 7 points8 points 4 months ago[-]

Not being an expert on torrenting terminology.

I'll upload equal or more of the file size I just downloaded, if it has to go much past finishing the download, then Ill stop.

I like to think I did my part by sharing what I just got.

surrealasm 6 points7 points 4 months ago[-]

P2P: ur doin it wrong!

DaimyoNoNeko 4 points5 points 4 months ago[-]

No, I seed to 1.5, sometimes 2x. There's a special place reserved in hell for non seeders, below the one for child molesters and people who talk in theaters.

Astinus 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

and the people who insist on taking more than 15 items through the 15 item line. I hope the NWO knocks those people off first.

My isp takes uploads off my downloads quota which forces me to have to slow it down to 5ks upload. The sad thing is that it is the australian isp that recently won a landmark case.

lektap 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Same boat as you. I want to share but I can't spare the precious quota.

SmartAssX 2 points3 points 4 months ago[-]

Demonoid yes

everything else no

Orsenfelt 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Wether I seed depends on the torrent. Just aired TV Shows with tens of thousands of seeds? Hell naw.

Obscure torrents with 3 seeds? I'll seed that.

dowjones 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

I have a symmetric connection and by the time I finish downloading something on a public tracker my ratio is already 5-20.

Once I left a movie torrent on when I went on a holiday, came back and my ratio was 800. Thanks, assholes.

chaloux 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Do want a symmetric connection.

shredGNAR 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

After getting a letter in the mail for seeding, I stopped.

sbussy89 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

From what I understand downloading is legal but distributing is illegal, so as soon as I'm done downloading and am only distributing I GTFO.

exscape 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

You distribute while downloading as well. You might argue that it shortens the time of the crime, but don't think you're in the green zone because you're a pure leecher.

sbussy89 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Yea I understand that., hence the "done downloading and only distributing"

trukin 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Deluge, when ration hits 0.01 and it is downloaded, autostop!!! :D. My ISP has caught me twice because of seeding after being done

Raticide 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

My data transfer is expensive. So I can't afford to seed.

norwegianrich 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

nope, my ratio matters.

nicolauz 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Arsehole ! I wish I knew how to share more...on my demonoid account it says my ratio is waaaay low and I can't figure out how to share more...

batnom 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

My uploads get counted towards my downloads, so no I don't seed at all. Australia FTL.

golden_pants 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Optus cable internet in Australia counts uploads, so I'm very sorry but I don't.

rogerssucks 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

My 25 GB bandwidth does not allow this. :(

daniel2009 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I try to give at least half before deleting the torrent. http://imgur.com/sMASI.png

Nikola434 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Well, I mostly keep seeding over night but I don't help people as much as some can. My upload speed is ~12kb/s but I do my best....

branded 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I'm an arsehole, but I never call others arseholes because I don't want my files the minute it comes out.

lavaargh 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

It depends on the torrent. I won't seed for weeks, but if I download a new TV episode, my upload ratio for that torrent is probably >10. If I download something more rare, like an old game, and I see no leechers, I just delete the torrent. This is on public trackers and DHT.

My ISP has a "fair use policy", so I won't upload hundreds of gigabytes per month. But on the bright side, downloading copyrighted content will not get me arrested; and if I don't use too much bandwidth I won't get disconnected from the Internet.

Chevellephreak 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Hell yes, I delete them too.

dkramer73 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I used to be a leacher (yes, I can admit it - and yes, I suck), but I have been trying to mend my ways the past few months and have been letting things seed to 1:1.

[deleted] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I seed both as much as possible.

yerajerk 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Nice try, MPAA.

razzbar 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Not me. I'm just a normal guy who doesn't seed them because he never uses them.

farceur318 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

You, sir, are the worst kind of monster. Away with ye.

razzbar 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

All you kids ever want to do is download, download, download.

Don't you twirps EVER create anything?

atomicthumbs 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I would seed more if I wasn't sharing a 1.5mbps DSL connection with three other people, one of whom is constantly playing video games and starts yelling when he starts lagging

icymintoptimos 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

only on public trackers

jayknow05 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I seed while I download, I have awful interwebs (hotwire blah), so I usually leave torrents running over night. I wake up to a 1x or greater ratio and cut it off at that point.

chaloux 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Depends on if I believe in what I'm seeding is worth it, as well as the seed/peer ratio. If it's a ridiculously huge torrent and my UL rate is slow anyway, I'll quit before. If it needs seeds and is something that is hard to find, I'll seed well over 1:1.

Torrents I've personally uploaded I'll seed forever, and periodically check to see if there are still a good amount of seeds.

barosa 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I've been leeching since the days when IRC fserves were the easiest way to download warez, music and vids

Confucius_says 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

private tracker - I'll seed to a 1:1 ratio, simply because if I don't I won't be able to download things

public tracker - I never seed after I finish downloading, simply because I want to use that upstream bandwidth to seed a private tracker.

[deleted] 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I have a server set up that handles all of the torrenting so I'm not looking at it often enough to pull my torrents before they are done seeding. Usually I start a torrent, forget about it for a couple days come back and it's done seeding. Then I sort everything into my library and remove it from the torrent list. Sometimes though if I'm downloading something I want to use right away I'll be that guy, mostly though because I don't want to leave the file in my incoming folder, I want to file it away promptly so I have less clutter to deal with.

kyleisagod -1 points0 points 4 months ago[-]

I try to upload as much if not more than I download.

The problem that I am faced with 9 times out of 10 is my upload speed is utter shit compared to my download speed. If I get 40 KB/s upload speed but 500 KB/s download speed and I'm downloading a 700 MB movie, it's going to take forever and a day to get my ratio back to 1:1.

That's why I rarely seed.

qpid666 -1 points0 points 4 months ago[-]

nop

ellipses1 -2 points-1 points 4 months ago[-]

I don't seed... that's how you get caught.

I would like more info on these private communities, though... I'd be happy to provide if there was a level of security that I won't be getting a call from "The Man" over my providing Anchorman for download

jayknow05 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

You won't get more than a nasty letter from your ISP for seeding, then again you'll get the same nasty letter for downloading...

ellipses1 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

But what about those people who were fined hundreds of thousands of dollars for having songs shared?

jayknow05 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Kazaa, not torrents.

ellipses1 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I tried using bittorrent to download torrents but it either wouldn't or it would do it at 1kb and was pointless... the same torrents in limewire work fine, most of the time, though... So, I use Limewire for torrents. Granted, I'm not really sure how it all works... I will have to do some reading on the subject.

jayknow05 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

use utorrent, torrentz.com is a good place to get trackers, demonoid.com is good as well but just keep an eye out for open registration. ezrss.it is a great place to RSS feed your torrents. You can create filters and download your favorite TV shows almost immediately after they're aired. Somebody on the West Coast can easily see a show before it is aired locally.

ellipses1 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

I appreciate that and I will look into it when I get home from work... the problem is, the terminology... open registration... what's that? open registration for what, exactly? RSS feeds... I know that RSS means really simple script, but I am not clear on how to use it or how to apply it to downloading tv shows or movies. I download torrents from torrentreactor.net or isohunt and then throw them in limewire and have maybe a 50% success rate at actually getting something... for other things, a simple search in limewire combined with know what files were good in the past... fills in the blanks for things I can't get else where. I really am looking for a reliable way to quickly download high-quality DVD and Blu-Ray rips as well as full seasons of TV shows. Hopefully your suggestions are the end all for me. Thank you.

jayknow05 1 point2 points 4 months ago[-]

Well, demonoid is basically a semi-private forum which holds torrents for you to download. Semi-private meaning, that although anybody can download the latest torrents and anybody can join; it only allows people to register at certain times and only registered users can dowload older torrents.

The RSS feed is the same as any other RSS feed, it just provides links to new torrent downloads. Using uTorrent you can create filters that automatically start downloads via RSS feeds. The ezrss.it is a really good feed that is constantly providing HD quality TV shows and bluray rips etc.

I like torrentz.com just because they verify good torrents with a star, you can also search only verified torrent files. The best way is to check the comments before you download, they will usually tell you if it is Fake/virus/good quality.

ellipses1 0 points1 point 4 months ago[-]

Thanks!

deepestbluedn -4 points-3 points 4 months ago[-]

In good private trackers I seed as much as I can, on shitty trackers (where people donate for credit) i just delete them and us e program I made to cheat my ratio.
