That we never found out what was in that mother fucking wall safe

[–]kmdg22c 254 points255 points ago

Or the secret HDD or the roll of film in the toilet.

[–]SheepyTurtle 71 points72 points ago

HDD posted again too.

[–]minno 35 points36 points ago

If I remember correctly, there turned out to be no intact data.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points ago

puns. the safe is packed with puns. one after the other.

[–][deleted] 76 points77 points ago

If we find out what was in it at this point, I think it will be a let down - kind of like seeing your sister naked.

OH BOOBS!

Wait.

Lack of reading comprehension, or perhaps just a lack of reading. All it takes is an article and a madeup headline to get Redditors all up in arms. Best example I can think of was over on r/frugal. The headline was something like, "Why you shouldn't buy store brand honey" and the comments were full of "TIL!" and "I don't trust store brands, anyway!" Except that the article didn't say that at all and it was completely made up by the OP.

It happens in comments, too. I've seen several people cite sources that say the direct opposite of what they're claiming, but people go ahead and upvote them because omg they linked a source they must be right!

[–][deleted] 98 points99 points ago

I see a lot of people here who can't even write properly. English is clearly their first language but their grammar and word choice is appalling. So it's no wonder they don't read either.

[–]frickindeal 125 points126 points ago

And I'm going to sound like a "get off my lawn" old fart, but it honestly wasn't always like that. Reddit had an early reputation for being a place populated by grammar nazis because it was expected that you check your grammar and spelling before posting.

[–]hopstar 46 points47 points ago

Reddit had an early reputation for being a place populated by grammar nazis

Hacker News still feels that way. I swear to science I spend more time proofreading my comments than I do typing them up in the first place, just to avoid a browbeating.

[–]minus000 536 points537 points ago

Meeting Redditors in real life has been very disappointing.
I was introduced to this website by some of the most intellectual, understanding and adult people I have ever met. For every one of them on this site, there are ten socially incompetent individuals who act like having an account here makes everything they say a blessing to the brain.

[–]iforgotmylastsn 151 points152 points ago

i had a similar introduction to the site. but now i realized that it's (over)saturated with...people. every other post on the front page is either a repost, a meme or a stupid cat.

reddit is just a big circlejerk.

I must ask, I have been on reddit for a few months now and am also over the memes, etc. What are some good subreddits I need to check out?

[–]42001321 62 points63 points ago

Hey, I'm not the commenter you replied to but I thought I'd chime in with some good ones I've found/been directed to :) I'm a bit too lazy to link, but some of my favorites are:

  • r/depthhub
  • r/foodforthought
  • r/theagora
  • r/history
  • r/wikipedia
  • r/truereddit

for starters. They don't post nearly as often as the subreddits most are used to, but the content isn't often a quick 'glance-over' article, either. You'll have to adjust to a somewhat new style of redditing but it's well worth it!

[–]frodokun 81 points82 points ago

[–]mindaika 139 points140 points ago

You think that's bad? Try meeting Mensa members. For being an (alleged) group of geniuses, it was the most boring bunch of folk I've ever encountered.

[–]Vulgarian 185 points186 points ago

Nice humblebrag.

[–]jaylow17 8 points9 points ago

"I can't watch American Idol because I have perfect pitch."

[–]emkajii 100 points101 points ago

Mensa is a club for people who are convinced that they have few friends because they're just too smart for normal people. This is almost always a laughably, obviously false belief.

What makes it even sillier is that their admissions criterion is pretty easy to meet: scoring in the 98th percentile on an IQ (or similar) test. 2% of the population is about 6,500,000 Americans. That's not exactly exclusive. I mean, it's a feather in your cap, I guess, but the air you're breathing at that altitude ain't rarefied.

[–]Ex-Sgt_Wintergreen 35 points36 points ago

Look up the list of "famous" Mensa members on wikipedia sometime if you want a laugh. The only two people I recognized were Isaac Asimov and the guy who draws Dilbert.

[–]mechasmartypants 17 points18 points ago

Wow. How many people would put Scott Adams on the same tier as Isaac Asimov? But anyway, I looked up the list and there were at least a couple more that looked interesting.

Jacques Bergier – Chemical engineer, member of the French resistance, spy, journalist and writer

Tell me that doesn't sound badass.

[–]Dauven 41 points42 points ago

Mensa is such an absurd circle jerk. Yes we have high IQ's, no that means absolutely nothing. It's just a club for desperate smugness and egocentricity.

[–]upsettingtldr 66 points67 points ago

tl;dr Did not get into Mensa.

[–]Dauven 25 points26 points ago

You have the makings of a brilliant novelty account!

[–]teethteetheat 34 points35 points ago

I met someone and literally the first thing they did was rattle off how much karma they have, both link and comment.

[–]Vincent133 46 points47 points ago

For every one of them on this site, there are ten socially incompetent individuals

Why do you expect the people who use such a popular site to be different than people in real life?

[–]Quetz23 21 points22 points ago

I went to a meetup in my hometown in july and met some interesting people. There was like thirty people ranging from an alcoholic stoner guy, to people who had established careers. Lots of university people as well. All in all a good group of people!

[–]Futhermucker 172 points173 points ago*

"nailed it"

"look what my girlfriend made me"

"I can't be the only one"

"found this gem"

PM's and comments telling me to kill myself when I've obviously been going through a bit of a bad spell during this 54th year of my life.

Also, the young egotistical punks.

[–]ChrisF79 165 points166 points ago

The number of submissions with rage comics and memes has gone through the roof. I don't know if the user base is just really young or I'm getting too old for the site (32 here). The irony though is that whenever the topic of memes and rage comics come up, posts are filled with people hating them yet they just won't disappear.

[–]WaterSnake 31 points32 points ago

I'm fine with the memes and rage-comics sticking to their respective subreddits, that's what they're for. But when there is a top-rated rage comic on every single subreddit, that's going too far. They stifle creativity, making everything sameish and boring. I'd rather see a really shitty MS-Paint comic than a rage comic, at least the poor art quality is funny.

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points ago

It's because people actually like them, and the people who hate them have been forced off the default subreddits and eventually reddit altogether. And it sucks. It's frustrating to see reddit go to shit, when just a couple years back it was great. Fuck r/adviceanimals and fuck r/fffuuuu.

[–]satellites 49 points50 points ago*

Yeah, I wouldn't tell people IRL who don't know about reddit that I'm a long-time user. If some curious person went to reddit.com and saw the front page, they'd be like "this is the dumbest fucking thing I've ever seen". And they'd be right.

I don't want to have to say "yeah, I post on reddit, but only in specific subreddits that don't have too much garbage. You should check it out, but quickly unsubscribe from most of the major subreddits., etc., etc.", so I just don't bring it up at all.

[–]crickey23 110 points111 points ago*

Bombarding me with ice soap and 2am chili, or any other meme really. It's like people enjoy beating a dead horse into a fine powder around here.

Edit: Also I think circlejerk has become its own meta-circlejerk. It used to be posts mocking other dump posts but now it's just "UPVOTE THIS TO" and "UPVOTES TO THE LEFT PEOPLE" and "HELP SUCH AND SUCH DO SUCH AND SUCH BY CLICKING UPVOTE." It's not funny anymore. What happened to mocking real posts?

[–]WaterSnake 48 points49 points ago

Real mocking posts take effort to think up. Ironically, /r/circlejerk is suffering the same creative starvation the rest of reddit is going through, and has resorted to using it's own memes.

[–]Ziddletwix 12 points13 points ago

It definetly feels like Circlejerk has become less and less original/funny. I love the subreddit, and there are still a lot of very genuinely funny posts there. but it feels like the ratio of well thought out satire (like that post, "Isn't it redundant to have both Reddit and Mensa?") to essentially spam ("SO BRAVE RON PAUL CARL SAGAN ICE CHILI SOAP") has gotten a lot worse. Maybe I just find the unoriginal spam less funny than I used to, but I feel like I have to search a lot longer to find actually funny content there.

[–]FEiN 137 points138 points ago*

Meta reddit posts. That shit up in f7u12 about how I didn't get on the front page are not amusing.

edit: I just want to point out that the f7u12 was an example of meta Reddit post, I dislike meta Reddit posts in ALL subredits.

[–]Diallingwand 121 points122 points ago

Nothing on f7u12 is amusing.

[–]Lillipout 60 points61 points ago

the ignorance, sensationalism, and hypocrisy of /r/politics

[–]blafo 20 points21 points ago

Holy fuck sensationalism on political and news subreddits is out of control. Reading there you would think the world is coming to a crashing end at the hands of villainous americans or something. It makes me crave rational discussion and fact checking.

[–]Quetz23 411 points412 points ago

The highpoint in disappointment for me comes from that /r/gaming thread where the guy posted a picture of the wedding ring he bought for his girlfriend, but all reddit wanted to do was make fun of her for being overweight. I know reddit has a "thing" against fat people... But wtf? Is everyone here like twelve or something? I thought the demographics were primarily adults, not whiny immature teenagers.

[–]zephyy 195 points196 points ago

i downvoted that thread because who the fuck cares, it's /gaming/, i don't care that your girlfriend is too addicted to skyrim to pay attention to you.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points ago

Ok, that's fine. I don't have a problem with downvoting the submission beause you don't like it.

But calling the dudes girlfriend fat? Completely out of line.

[–]WaterSnake 34 points35 points ago

Exactly. I mean, there used to be a rule in r/gaming where the actual picture, sans title and text, had to be relevant to gaming. I think it's since gone now, and that's fine in some cases, but that post had fucking nothing to do with gaming. And while the name-calling was unacceptable, the post was shit and should have gone to /r/pics or something like that.

[–]Quetz23 64 points65 points ago

I take no issue with downvotes like yours.

[–]kittydavis 10 points11 points ago

That post broke my heart.

[–][deleted] 78 points79 points ago

Most of the people mocking here are probably fat fuckers too.

[–]JimmyDThing 53 points54 points ago

In my experience, the people who criticize fat people most are made up of 2 groups: former fat people who feel it is their right to piss on people who haven't bettered themselves like they have and people with extremely high metabolisms that think it takes effort to gain weight no matter who you are.

[–]headfullofuselessnes 64 points65 points ago

Or would like a girlfriend but are inwardly terrified of the concept. And yes, it means that you have to bathe regularly, practice decent grooming habits, and think about someone else for once.

[–]Offensive_Username2 10 points11 points ago

And you might have to date someone who doesn't look like a pornstar.

[–]grahamfreeman 180 points181 points ago

I am disappointed in the difference between atheists and Reddit atheists.

[–]MarlonBain 63 points64 points ago

I am with you, but lets think about this for a second.

Of all the atheists, some of them will be annoying and want to talk about it all of the time. The rest won't really care much and don't really think about religion ever. I'd guess that the second group is vastly larger than the first.

Which, of those two types of atheists, do you think are going to predominate /r/atheism?

[–]bugalou 116 points117 points ago

Reposts, image links, rage comics, etc do not bother me. There are so many sub reddits, if this really annoys people, there are plenty of ways to get it off your front page and get content you want to see.

I suppose my biggest grievance is the following. I will explain the best that I can, and I hope some of you can relate: Most of us know Reddit as a very open and understanding community, yet we seem to only live up to that notion if the subject at hand is a nice round peg that fits into the hivemind's mentality. So instead of diversity, you get the same old circlejerk which only starts a feedback loop to continually harden the hivemind.

I suppose in short my point could be that we should remember not to downvote comments or posts just because we do not agree with them. Downvotes should be reserved for hateful, immature, etc individuals.

[–]civilized1 27 points28 points ago

I agree with you completely. I've found that esoteric philosophies or ideologies don't go over well here---and it seems they did when I first joined. It seems strange that anything sexual seems to be fine to discuss, but god forbid someone is against OWS...it's downvote central.

Also, has anyone noticed that Reddit seems to have more whiny college students lately? I have no problem with college students (I was one myself once), but the whiny, immature ones get under my skin.

[–]Anarchy738 13 points14 points ago

That's the hypocrisy of Reddit. Profess to standing up for individual rights and personal freedoms...and then shout down anyone who disagrees with the hivemind.

This is why it will never truly be taken seriously by any corporation/politician/citizen that isn't trying to pander to it for some short term need they have.

[–]pungkow 48 points49 points ago

That sounds like hipster talk... HE'S ONE OF THEM

[–]wtfmanquestionmark 92 points93 points ago

Hey. Thanks for talking about Ron Paul. We believe he has a great chance to win Iowa. Can we count on your support?!

[–]FuckingDIY 95 points96 points ago

Not nearly fanatical enough to be a true Ron Paul supporter.

[–]allADD 14 points15 points ago

oh oh and if someone has piercings, tattoos, and/or dresses differently/nice, they're automatically a hipster and deserve our scorn.

Oh seriously, this part. I've seen so many threads featuring a photo of an attractive girl with tattoos or a nose ring where a majority of posters will comment on how anything of the sort makes her automatically unattractive and an idiot. And then there's a slightly more vocal minority who starts accusing anyone with "alternative" styles of having emotional problems, like some psychologist from the 50s. It's bizarre that beauty culture on here is still a few decades back for a lot of people.

[–]BeardTheBeerBard 229 points230 points ago*

The fact that the engineers here think that they are the only people worthy of employment and the only ones with opinions that matter. It's a little comical if not for the fact that I think many of you are misguided enough to actually seriously believe what you are saying.

And, the only art and music that gets noticed is novelty. Rarely is anything of any quality revered here in the way that a girl poorly playing violin with a cat on her head would be. Yet, everyone here seems to believe they are sage art/music critics.

[–]primenumbersturnmeon 22 points23 points ago

I'm a fourth-year electrical engineering major and right now I'd give anything to go back in time and go to film school instead. Probably not a wise sentiment, but I've just about had it with this shit.

[–]Engineer99 95 points96 points ago

Engineer here, and I disagree. I couldn't do my job without the help of many other disciplines.

P.S. Your degree is worthless, should've been an engineer.

Moderators for default/very large subreddits that refuse to moderate strictly because they are so large. Yes I know it says its a catch all subreddit on the sidebar, you can fucking change it and make the subreddit not suck.

Reddits signal to noise ratio is horrible nowadays.

And the worst part is I've contributed to it.

http://www.reddit.com/r/AskReddit/comments/n1txi/hey_reddit_what_is_that_one_stupid_question_you/c35n2ko

The person asked a serious question, I made a joke that made me chuckle a little bit and thought it might make the person laugh. Enough people saw it as a karma train and it exploded as a comment, completely taking away from Ops question. If I wasn't at work and not checking reddit I would have deleted the damn comment so OP could get some real answers.

In the end the person got a few serious answers but after checking through half the thread it was somewhere around 5 serious responses/actual conversation to 75 noncontributing or joke comments.

edit: Just want to rephrase, its not that some light humor is bad, but its no longer a quick quip for humors sake, its all about how to get karma. I actually have friends that try to think of funny comments/submissions for karma and may or may not have bragged on facebook about being front paged. I was guilty of this years ago(when first to post xkcd was an insta front page), but I realized doing so was... pointless. There are so many people who haven't got that yet and with reddits growth I fear it won't ever go away. People aren't upvoting posts/comments because they like them, they upvote them because they think it will frontpage or become the top comment and they can ride the coattails of that post there too.

For gods sakes Chuck Testa came in and out of favour in the time it takes me to go to the bathroom at work.

[–][deleted] 93 points94 points ago

well, mostly i just hate the phony kinsmanship that some "redditors" like to pretend exists between them. we aren't members of a special club or brotherhood, we are just members of this site, which is not only free to join, but ridiculously easy.

[–]marvin 134 points135 points ago

Hating. In all its forms. This has really only caught my eye in the last year, after the latest round of new users joined the community. Almost every thread that attacks a topic which is in any way controversial has lots of heavily upvoted comments attacking the man behind the opinion, instead of the issue itself. Or just being mean.

There are hundreds and hundreds of examples of this, ranging from rape victims who get accused of "wanting it", women who have been subjected to sex discrimination accused of just "being whiny" and peopl who get bashed for presenting a minority religious view, to forever alone neckbeards who get yelled at and ridiculed when their bitterness at never getting new friends or partners shines through. All this blatant expression of "I'm so much better than you", "You're wrong" and "My opinion is the only valid option" sickens me.

And yes, even this thread contains lots and lots of comments that are blatantly hating, some of them voted to the very top. I know it's so incredibly tempting to bitch and moan about an opinion you disagree with instead of trying to present a rational counterargument...or just keeping your mouth shut and accepting the fact that we are an incredibly diverse community with varied values and opinions. Some really good discussions have come out the new subreddits and diversification of the community, but there is just so much unadulterated hate.

If I was going to make one wish for the community for next year, it would be that people (both in comments and in voting patterns) become more tolerant and accepting of conflicting views. But as reddit becomes more and more a mainstream site with a huge following, this problem is probably bound to get worse. Because upvoting an elegant smackdown of an opinion you disagree with is just so much easier than forming a specific idea about why you disagree.

Sorry for hating so much in this comment, but it needed to be said.

But..but.. Chris Rock said it in a stand up act so I can say it too.

[–]nihonniboku 50 points51 points ago

Same thing with Louis CK and it being okay for straight guys to say "fag" now. No, that was not the point of his comedic routine, and no, Louis CK saying it does not mean that you can say it too.

[–]washer 72 points73 points ago

Would you count the cop hatred under this? I got pulled over the other day and the cop told me to watch out cuz the light over my license plate was broken. I thanked him and told him I'd replace it, and that I was gonna be late for work. He handed me back my ID and instantly sent me on my way with well wishes. Very nice guy. A few months ago I decided to go straight at a place where the road forked and roughed up some unfortunate fellow's property. The man filed a report with the police to cover his bases, the police found me and were extremely courteous, put me in touch with the man, and stayed with me long enough to make sure everything was squared away. Both times I was fully expecting the cops to be complete assholes and they couldn't have been nicer or more professional.

Anyway. I know isolated anecdotes have no statistical value, but I wanted to point out that not all police are gonna fuck with you just because.

[–]Dovienya 264 points265 points ago

And if you don't agree with my racism or mysogyny, you're a white knight/you're too PC!

[–]a_small_thump 12 points13 points ago

God, yes. Every time I see a huge circlejerk in the comments about how girls friendzone guys, I'm blown away. I hope these people are in high school, but things like r/mensrights make me doubt it. As a 23 year old male, it's embarrassing as fuck to see so many people in my gender just whining about girls constantly... especially those people who whine about how girls whine. It's just... I have no words for it. Sad? Weird? Hypocritical?

I'm beginning to see the average male redditor as someone who only likes to stay in and play videogames, avoids exercise, avoids parties, avoids cooking, avoids basic hygiene, and wonders why girls don't like them. So, I guess I'm seeing Comic Book Guys everywhere. But even Comic Book Guy was realistic about it, at least.

[–]Wibbles 178 points179 points ago

"We're so liberal and accepting!"

"Fuck gypsies"

"We're so liberal and accepting not racist!"

"Fuck niggers"

Not an exaggeration either, these are literal quotes that have been highly upvoted in threads regarding whenever people in these groups misbehave. The proponents claim it's not racist, yet they never scream "fuck crackers" when a white guy is being a dick.

[–]soignees 63 points64 points ago

i am half romany gypsy (english flavour) from my mum's side. The gypsy vitriol doesn't surprise me, it's like it's socially acceptable to hate on the culture.

[–]Silenced_is_Foo 58 points59 points ago

I'm actually bewildered by it... I mean, I'd think most young Redditors would think gypsies are make-believe, like elves, gremlins, and eskimos.

I always make it a point to correct people who use the slur "gypped" though. It's a hateful word based on the bigoted assumption that all gypsies are con-artists out to rip you off.

The correct term is "Jewed".

[–]gpick19 53 points54 points ago

TIL that "gypped" is not spelled "jipped" and is in fact, racist.

[–]duoizumi 110 points111 points ago

I don't understand misogyny. How is a woman inferior in regards to certain things? My girlfriend is handier with tools than I am by far. I say fuck gender roles.

[–]FlyingMastaba 263 points264 points ago

It's far more subtle than that. Examples I've seen on Reddit of misogyny

  • Calling a girl a karma whore for posting a hat she made and being in the picture. A lot of the responses she got called her ugly/or how much they wanted to sleep with her.

  • The whole friend zone thing. If a girl doesn't like you back she's a cunt.

  • All the hackneyed sexist "jokes" like get back in the kitchen. It was funny the first time, not the 97983 time. Then I get called a stuck up cunt for pointing out the OP lack of humor.

I could go on but you see the point.

[–]Metaphoricalsimile 33 points34 points ago

You get told you don't have a sense of humor, for pointing out the un-funny "humor" of the joke-teller.

[–]hooj 67 points68 points ago

The prevalence of self-righteous attitudes: "Why is it my responsibility to tip? Why don't the employers just pay more?!?!" Well, yeah, it would be great if we could change up the system at the drop of the hat, but we can't. However, you not tipping (in the USA) when it's expected is just you being a dick, not you changing the system. I mean, by all means, don't tip if the service was shitty, but if there was nothing to complain about, you're taking out the flaws in a crappy system on the person who deserves it least.

Further, the wide and open support for software piracy. Listen, I get it. I was a poor college student that wanted to play games. However, I never felt like I was entitled to them as some of the jerks out here do or seem to. People love to paint copying software in a light where there's nothing wrong and it's the same mentality as tipping. Paying per copy might not be the most ideal model for monetizing software, but people having grand claims that there's nothing wrong with piracy or that it always helps ("it's like, publicity, man") is such self-serving thinking.

Get over yourselves.

facebook postings

[–]thehumantowel 32 points33 points ago

Mainly a problem with /r/gaming but Arrow to the Fucking Knee.

[–]Fookimoose 37 points38 points ago

I'm sick of posts about college, facebook, not being able to pick up women, hipsters, posting to reddit. I'm also sick of the following post titles:

  • What the actual fuck
  • If you do this, fuck you
  • Fuck everything about this
  • Nailed it?

[–]Skarl 26 points27 points ago

Hate the hivemind groupthink.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Fake screencaps of textmessages and facebook.
Increasing racism and misogyny.
Nonstop meme circlejerk.

[–]threedice 10 points11 points ago

I recently had to deal with some redditors who used my real name as a phoney reddit ID, then went all over Reddit spouting anti-Semitic and racial race-baiting taunts. Then, when someone asked who they were, they posted a link to my personal homepage. The harassment got so bad, I had to have hueypriest shut down their account because of all the abuse.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points ago

Politics posts ending up in every subreddit that isn't supposed to be political. I chime here to read cool stories and laugh, not read arguments.

[–]Hachi-Machi 1038 points1039 points ago

Forming a community where people masturbate to children? What the hell is wrong with you people, Im glad we put a stop to it. And reposts, reposts all the time! Screw the people who joined last month, I've seen that picture five times this year. Oh, you aren't a cunt because you lack warmth and depth. Did you come up with that one all by yourself? NO! You fucking saw it here, a dozen times before in only half a dozen threads, so stop posting it.

Shut up about Ron Paul. We all know he's a better candidate than any other Republican out there. We also know his ideas wont work in reality and he has disturbing views towards women's rights and science. And as for atheists, stop posting made up facebook conversations. It undermines your claim to be the smartest people in the room. And everyone else, shut the hell up about atheists. They suffer a society where the laws and cultural norms are largely determined by people who believe in an invisible sky wizard, let them vent about it on the internet.

r/Mensrights, you guys have some pretty good counterpoints to male privileged, but the bitter rejected guy vibes are coming through rather strongly. Focus on substantive articles or debate topics. And OneY, post more content! TwoX is out there every day with awesome and supportive new threads.

Shut up about engineering. People are forced to choose college majors too early in America, and Liberal Arts majors chose to develop a variety of widely applicable skills rather than focusing on one important skill. It's a different approach to getting employed that doenst work well when you have no experience in a bad economy. But that doesnt mean society should just be composed of hard math and science people. I smile every thread where people complain about a lack of women in engineering. Maybe you people will have to marry political scientists, and then where will you be?

And holy hell, stop lording your country over on everybody. All the countries, but especially your country. Im sure it's great in its own way, and sucks in a lot of ways too. I bet your culture and history has some skeletons in its closet, so stop making fun of Americans or Europeans or wherever the hell you arent from.

TL;DR - I love you guys, but seriously, I fucking hate you people.

[–]John_um 97 points98 points ago

TL;DR - I love you guys, but seriously, I fucking hate you people.

That should be the official TL;DR of Reddit.

[–]jerisad 200 points201 points ago

<3 Thanks for the shout-out to the liberal arts majors.

[–]StarOfAthenry 39 points40 points ago

I am a physics major at a liberal arts school. I've never felt so intellectually confuddled.

[–]jerisad 13 points14 points ago

I knew an English major at MIT, she felt the same way.

[–]squidfood 33 points34 points ago

People are forced to choose college majors too early in America

I just have to say, just about every other country I've seen you're streamed by high school or even earlier (I'm thinking O-levels and A-levels but other countries have similar examples). Comparatively, Americans get to fiddle around undecided for a heck of a long time.

Not a bad thing at all, just a sense of perspective!

[–]totalkant 84 points85 points ago

I'm still waiting for reddit to acknowledge that people who go to art school exist

[–]goodizzle 75 points76 points ago

I GO TO ART SCHOOL

[–]totalkant 123 points124 points ago

I GO TO ART SCHOOL AND I DON'T REGRET IT. TAKE THAT, YOU FUCKERS.

[–]goodizzle 130 points131 points ago

I KIND OF REGRET IT BUT REALLY LIKE DRAWING AND CERAMICS AND I'M GOOD AT THEM SO I GUESS it's okay.

[–]netwrkng 71 points72 points ago

Just Got back from r/mensrights and I can confirm this...holy Shit

[–]bezenartw 16 points17 points ago

I don't know how but I was subscribed to it for weeks. Its no so much proman as it is antiwoman. Lots of butthurt going on overthere.

[–]vnads 47 points48 points ago

Greatest TL;DR ever.

And yeah, the reposts kill me. People shouldn't be allowed to post for the first few months.

[–]wallychamp 38 points39 points ago

To expand on reposts, though, don't title your fucking submissions "This fucking guy!" and then complain about it being a repost. I'm not sorry that I didn't search every possible ambiguous term before posting something I found funny.

[–]Silenced_is_Foo 51 points52 points ago

Imho, /r/MensRights lost any possible shred of decency with the doxxing incident.

Seriously, I believe there are important issues where men are persecuted for being men. We can have a nice little game of oppression Olympics where we argue whether these issues are as serious as various other forms of bigotry, but regarldess: The issues exist. Most reasonable feminists will admit that The Patriarchy Hurts Men Too.

But /r/MensRights are a goddamned fucking embarrassment to their cause.

[–]hopstar 5 points6 points ago

TL;DR - I love you guys, but seriously, I fucking hate you people.

I've never such a succinctly perfect summation of reddit.

[–]EnviousDan 5 points6 points ago

As a criminology major I thank you. Yes, I am very bad at math and science. Yes, much of it is due to a lack of motivation. But now that I'm actually working I find the rehabilitation of criminals and getting them back into the community not only interesting but morally satisfying.

[–]mindaika 151 points152 points ago

Some of these I agree with; some of them not so much. /r/MensRights though... holy crap is that place out of hand.

[–]easilystartled 85 points86 points ago

Reddit feels like a little boys club at times with all the misogony, racism and bigotry...and also the fact it's called a community.

[–]deepvbro 40 points41 points ago

"DAE". When i first started lurking I thought they were cool and they made me feel like I wasn't the only weirdo. Now I downvote them into oblivion.

[–]WaterSnake 31 points32 points ago

DAE Breathe?

[–]KidCaine 31 points32 points ago

In am not one to complain much about seeing things repeated on Reddit or really anywhere, usually I just continue apathetically browsing when some meme is being beat to death in the comments. Heck, I don't care much about reposts either, I just see it, acknowledge I have seen it before, and then move on. But this "Arrow to the knee" joke has basically killed me. I can't got to any gaming website or video now without it coming up. Even my sister (who doesn't know about Skyrim btw) has started using it. It's a plague.

[–]thelittleking 9 points10 points ago

Could be the rampant sexism. Or maybe the casually accepted racism.

Oh, or the continued defense of pedophiles, and the claims that anybody arrayed against them is on a witch hunt.

I really cannot choose, you choose for me.

[–]CravingSunshine 9 points10 points ago

I posted something on /r/relationships. Worst experience I've ever had. I was told to edit my grammar or they would take my post down, then I got hit on by two different guys who spelled you 'u'. I will never post there again.

[–]K931SAR 9 points10 points ago

Must admit that the progressive air here is too often tainted by stereotyping and objectifying of women. Hey, you asked...

[–]worldofjay 85 points86 points ago

The America is so fucked comments - yea, we have problems, lots of other places do too, but overall, this place is still pretty damn awesome. But one YouTube video or real-life interaction with the wrong idiot equals hundreds of comments on how bad it is here and how the US is about to crumble and how things are so wonderful everywhere else - enjoy the country you have and work to fix the things you don't like about it!

/end soapbox

[–]MenuBar 24 points25 points ago

They told me that putting milk in orange soda pop would taste like a Creamsicle Popsicle.

It didn't. The milk curdled immediately.

They also told me "My Little Pony" was a fun show for adults to watch.

It wasn't. And my neighbors caught me watching it.

[–]CSec064 23 points24 points ago

Why bother? Nothing will change. :/

That is my grievance as well.

[–]eddyofyork 7 points8 points ago

Read an article before you comment. Or don't comment. Also, learn to fucking read. I've seen people say things that directly contradict the evidence of the article.

Also, and this is a big one, just because your article says "Study shows that dog-owners live longer" DOES NOT MEAN THAT DOGS CAUSE YOU TO LIVE LONGER. Learn how statistics work before you tell me what they mean.

[–]jonny_lube 9 points10 points ago

Girlfriend of 4 years is having lunch with a male coworker? BREAK UP, SHE IS CHEATING. Wife of 6 years read through your text messages? TRUST IS THE FOUNDATION OF MARRIAGE, DIVORCE. Dating a girl who texts to ask where you are? DON'T STICK YOUR DICK IN CRAZY, RUN LIKE HELL. Fiance slaps you during a drunken argument? CALL THE COPS AND CALL OFF THE WEDDING.

For fuck's sake askreddit, we are getting a few paragraphs of one side other story without ANY knowledge as to the complexities of a relationship. We aren't seeing all the positive things in the relationship nor the negatives from the OP. Stop fucking trying to end every relationship because of one imperfect trait or momentary lapse. We all have our faults.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points ago

Reddit can be extremely sexist. But - I did learn something - I can be incredibly sexist - internalized misogyny is the word for the way I felt. I am working on it, and I'd like to thank Reddit for helping me realize that there was something about myself that I didn't like. But honestly, a lot of you can really just go fuck yourselves. I certainly won't be fucking you.

[–]ozdok 41 points42 points ago

Askreddit has gone to shit!!!!

90% of the posts on this subreddit are simply DAE (Does Anybody Else) posts. Anything that ends with " I will start..." should be promptly removed. I mean how come there can't be any actual discussion on social, economics, human, political questions and discussions?

Fuck you and your " what is your most/worst/nastiest/best.." posts. All of these are basically just the same question recycled over and over and asked again 10 times a day. Seriously fuck you. Why are you trying to know so much about people's personal lives anyway?

AskReddit needs to do better.

[–]one_afternoon 21 points22 points ago

SO. FUCKING. BRAVE.

[–]Pookah 26 points27 points ago

"This"

[–]Boofyostaff 14 points15 points ago

Seems to be an overabundance of people who complain, "I am such a catch, but chicks and/or dudes never go for me!" There's probably a reason that people don't go for you, which means you're not as much of a catch as you think. What is up with this over-inflated sense of self worth?

[–]poktanju 7 points8 points ago

I'm sure a significant portion of the reddit userbase would consider me less than human.

[–]jollipirate 7 points8 points ago

One of the first threads I remember reading (and that made me decide reddit was for me) was an Askreddit thread about wedding rings, and if you would get an engagement/wedding ring from a pawn shop. That spawned quite a few discussions including a huge discussion about diamonds and the gem industry, which taught me a lot and changed the way I perceive the value of jewelry. There were also redditors who shared the stories of their wedding days and whether cheap weddings were OK. I still remember one redditor's story about getting married in a local park for about $500, and it sounded like an amazing wedding.

I've since seen both topics come up on askreddit a few times, but now the thread is always just people declaring something along the lines of "rings are dumb and fuck everyone who wants a wedding that's just stupid". There's no discussion, no information brought to light outside of half-formed personal opinions, and the occasional story from a married redditor about their wedding day. I can't recall a recent thread where I went in with only a foggy idea what I thought, and came out of it having learned something that stuck with me longer than it took to click the next link.

I miss learning things from you reddit. Teach me things.

[–]staticwaves 20 points21 points ago

Something about a cat [fixed]

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points ago

(Control + F) Nope, guess I'm first to say it.

USE Control + F to see if you agree with what someone else already posted. Seeing a version of the same comment over and over in the same thread can get a bit depressing.

[–]spyduhgirl 48 points49 points ago

Got trolled cause I look different :(

[–]WaterSnake 41 points42 points ago

On a related note, using trolled in lieu of "pranked" or "made fun of" is getting on my nerves. Let's get creative with our vocab, reddit.

[–]RottenDeadite 25 points26 points ago

Well, to be fair, Reddit does hate spiders.

Oh wait I should probably actually learn wtf you're talking about first.

[–]dcmcderm 74 points75 points ago

Chuck mother fucking Testa.

[–]ochoa88 110 points111 points ago

The constant hating of Justin Bieber. The kid makes a ton of money, and really doesn't hurt anyone.

[–]sakuramboo 27 points28 points ago

Go into r/DJs and you will see the same level of hatred for Skrillex.

[–]killercacti 55 points56 points ago

I don't see it much around reddit, but it really baffles me when actual grown up adults spend so much of their time and energy hating this kid. Chances are most of them never hear his music, never see his music videos...it's just cool to hate him. I know a girl who talks about wanting to kill him on a pretty regular basis. It's disturbing. Use that time and energy to think about/do something productive!

[–]rebishaz 60 points61 points ago

I saw him on BBC America's The Graham Norton Show this morning. Girls in the audience kept wooing and interrupting them while they were trying to have an interview. Forty-five greulling seconds later and Bieber yells out, "We get it!"

[–]famousninja 9 points10 points ago

He's the Hanson of a new generation.

It's gonna happen, and he's gonna be forgotten, just like Aaron Carter.

[–]WhiteBelt 4 points5 points ago

I think that should be said of a lot of people and things. This site, and this world, would be better off if people would stop hating on people/things that aren't hurting anyone.

[–]dmun 11 points12 points ago

Well, I just learned that someone had 450 upvotes in the positive for very eloquently saying that watching kiddie porn did not contribute to the further creation of kiddie porn. Decriminalization.. of the consumption.. of child pornography.

Some of the people who upvoted him must have, statistically, been Ron Paul supporters-- who somehow don't understand supply and demand.

450 in defense of kiddie porn. And then someone quit over it.

I honestly have started to wonder whether all those invasions, the Klan and Stormfront and 4Chan trolling, has overwhelmed normalcy... or if this is just the way far, far too many Redditors are when no one's watching.

[–]iwasapolygon 32 points33 points ago

  • Upvotes aren't "likes" and downvotes aren't "dislikes." You downvote something if it's irrelevant, you upvote if you enjoyed it and think others should see it.
  • /r/adviceanimals used to be one of my favorite subreddits. But now it's mostly just human memes. What the fuck, /r/adviceanimals. At least change your god damn name already, maybe /r/quickmene or something.
  • Speaking of memes, memes shouldn't be allowed to be posted unless it's a meme-oriented subreddit, or if it's a community that doesn't really care like r/trees. Seriously, this needs to stop.
  • I feel like reddit would have better amateur porn besides semi-illegal teenagers. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, if anyone has suggestions besides /r/thick /r/randomsexiness /r/ass etc etc., please.
  • Askreddit needs a filtering system, or the posters need to fucking use the search feature before posting. Seriously, the last meal question must be asked four times a week. Also, askreddit posts that don't even have a question in them should be removed. That's not even trying.
  • I still think users who dip below a certain negative comment karma threshold should be banned from the site.

[–]clade_nade 43 points44 points ago

The gypsy thing. C'mon, Reddit. Just... c'mon.

[–]Socks_Junior 15 points16 points ago

The gypsy thing is a hundreds year old tradition in Europe. It won't be going away any time soon.

[–]poorasian 10 points11 points ago

Has nothing to do with reddit. Europeans just really hate gypsies.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points ago

Fucking Chuck Testa. Dear god, that was the most annoying meme ever.

[–]BALTIM0R0N 60 points61 points ago

Being upset about r/jailbait being shut down.

[–]ImStillAwesome 5 points6 points ago

People using their shaky understanding of the Constitution and evolutionary biology to justify the same.
