Loud noise coming from C5 Galaxy military plane at airshow? (self.AskReddit)

I was at an airshow the other day and I think it was the C5 Galaxy or another military plane that was making a shit load of noise while it was parked . The noise came from the side of the plane out some vent and after it was done a big whiff of smoke shot out of the vent. I'm wondering what that could be? Auxiliary power or something?

That is the APU. Auxiliary Power Unit. Basically it is a small jet engine used to power ground electronics, provide starting air for the main engines and on some aircraft provide back up hydraulics.
