The Olive Garden near my house is ALWAYS packed. It's inexplicable. At 5 PM on a Wednesday, the parking lot would be full and there's a 30 min wait out the door.

With so many great independent restaurants around here, I can't figure any explanation to it, other than it's because people love predictability, and terrible Americanized Italian food.

"OK. Number 307. Yep, he checked out this morning, let's say."

"But sir, his phone charger is still here."

"Doesn't matter. The paperwork says he checked out this morning."

"Isn't that a toothbrush on the counter, though? And look, his luggage is still there. In fact, it's open, and there's a framed picture of his family poking out of the top."

"Johnson, what is this in my hand?"

"The paperwork, sir?"

That's right. Now chuck all this stuff in the bin."

Checked in about 6 for confirmed 2 night stay in Pittsburgh Holiday Inn. Sleep. Went about my work the next day. Come back to Holiday Inn late, about 11:30. Key card won't work. Go down to the desk, get the key card reprogrammed. Room is clean. Too clean. My clothes are gone. Toiletries gone. My prescription eyeglasses were in there. Call front desk. No true manager is there. Housekeeping is gone. They will find out where the stuff is in the morning.

Morning comes and I call the desk. Nobody knows what I'm talking about. Getting pissed. Nobody calls my room. Get ready, go down and ask to speak to the manager. Wait a long time. Late for meeting. Finally speak briefly to the fill-in manager who makes promises (regular manager is out). Have plane to catch and must leave town with no time to return to the hotel.

Call hotel. No stuff found. Housekeeping pleads innocence (of course). Make follow-up calls and write several letters. The General Manager blows me off every time. Corporate will not do anything to replace my things. Filed a police report. Get the run around for a couple months.

HOLIDAY INN BOYCOTTED FOREVER.

(I travel >30 nights a year.)

[–]Deeterific 33 points34 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Holiday Inn is a franchise. If you ever can't get what you need out of a GM within a day or two call up the company support line and say:

"I stayed at the Holiday Inn in Pittsburgh and someone stole all my personal effects. If this isn't made right I will never use another Intercontinental (parent company) hotel again and I'll tell all my friends my story."

I would be amazed if you weren't taken care of rapidly. Those are the kind of complaints where a couple can get a hotel kicked out of a brand.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points ago

I don't understand this. If you look at the reviews or ask almost anyone they will say it's a good movie. • Sony - After the Blank CD Rootkit I stopped trusting them. Later they released a thumbprint-reading flashdrive with rootkit software (although it didn't do anything). I still don't trust them.

  • Apple - Steve Jobs is becoming Big Brother and I want nothing to do with it. Call me old fashioned, but I still subscribe to the idea that when you buy a physical item or device, you own it and it's yours to do as you please with. A restricted license to use it under terms does not appeal to me any more than a kick in the teeth.

  • Activision - This one is primarily Bobby Kotick's fault, quoted as saying that the best way to run a video game studio was with an atmosphere of skepticism, pessimism and fear. Activision is responsible for milking the Tony Hawk franchise, the Guitar Hero franchise (after purchasing it from Harmonix), and the Call of Duty franchise (Firing and suing their own employees in the process).

OP, your story reminds me of one of my own, except the video store in question wasn't a big chain but a locally owned store.

We had shopped there for YEARS. They had seen I don't know how many hundreds of dollars from us. Then one day I rent an ancient video tape and the tape breaks in our VCR. Took it back and they tried to charge me for it. I told them to fuck off and never went back.

To be honest, I could have and probably should have talked to the general manager or the owner. It never went above the cashier.

Any game with intrusive DRM. I should be able to change my hardware around as much as I god damned please and play offline whenever I fucking feel like it, taking away either of those abilities from the person legitimately spending money on your product is wrong, and is one of the main reasons people pirate your shit.

The Catholic Church. I'm Catholic (haters may commence downvoting), but I rarely go anymore, and never, ever, donate a dime. I've grown increasingly dissatisfied with their actions for years, but the straw that broke the camel's back is when they used money that I had hoped would go to charity and good works to fight gay marriage.

It's fine if they don't approve of it and refuse to hold ceremonies, that's their right, but to actively fight against something that wouldn't affect them just pissed me off. That, and the hiding of child rapists and lack of cooperation with civil authorities.

No way. I was mayor of plenty of places. Then I realized that the only people who knew where I was on foursquare were my friends - the same ones that I prefer to text / call to let them know where I am.

The concept was interesting but I feel like too many people check in to places that they just walk by so they can be mayors of everything.

Also, I realized that no one cares where I am. Nor do they want it on their newsfeed.

[–]chad2261 10 points11 points ago

Also, I realized that no one cares where I am. Nor do they want it on their newsfeed.

At one time this was my sole reason for avoiding things like Facebook and Twitter. Really, who cares what random thing is on my mind at this particular moment? Who cares what I just had for dinner, what song I'm listening to and where I'll be later, and why should I bother to type it out? The fact is, I still don't get it. But I gave in long ago.

One of the funniest ideas I've ever come across was trying to explain to a representative from an alien civilization why we put such value and time/effort into things like Twitter. And then I realized I could substitute "representative from an alien civilization" for "grandparent" and get pretty much the same chuckle.

Foursquare has such ridiculous potential to be the ultimate socializing/meet new people/dating/random hookup platform. To make "social media" actually social. But they've done fuck-all with that potential.

Abercrombie & Fitch/Hollister. Their hiring practices are discriminatory. They don't hire people of color typically and hire based on looks. The higher-ups run checks on the store to make sure the attractive people are all out front and the second tier works in the back stocking. My sister-in-law worked there when she was younger and they told her she was the prettiest, so should work in a bikini top.

I have always been confused by Hollister because I've known about the town Hollister since I was a little kid. Hollister Co's clothes are beachy. The town of Hollister is not close to the beach and is a sleepy little community that has a bitchin' motorcycle rally near July 4th every year. I wonder if they just picked the name of a town in California and didn't bother looking to see if the clothes actually represented the place they were seemingly naming it after.

  2. To get the job, you have to pass photo inspection. Applicants actually have to strike a pose to work there. Doesn't matter how much experience you have in retail, if you're too old (over 25), too fat, too ugly (in their eyes), you're not getting the job.
  3. Evidently, you can tell which catalog models Dov Charney is sleeping with because they're the ones featured most prominently.
  4. He hires 19 year old girls and places them in positions of power with no prior experience.

Oh and probably most important: It looks like the company is going bankrupt. American Apparel is about to be delisted from the NYSE for not sending in their quarterly financial reports.

Smartphones. They absolutely ruin people's attention spans. I haven't seen a single person yet that is capable of having a smartphone and not:

A.) Looking down at it typing while stumbling down a street

B.) staring at it while driving

C.) Responding to emails at all hours of the day

On top of that I think its crazy to spend upwards of $100 a month on phone/data/tex plan.

I'm not saying you do this, but when dumbphone advocates who simply cannot fathom why one would pay near $100 a month for a data plan and then constantly asks me to google stuff or look up movie times or directions etc. (I'm thinking of one friend in particular) so I boycott their requests.

Do you know why they're called "trailers"? They used to follow the film. Soda from fast-food places or fountains. I'd prefer that retailers use a flat margin rather than trying to trick us into covering their profit margin. So, no combo meals and no $1.50 for $0.20 worth of sugar water.

No Facebook until they are honest about what they do and who they do it for. They don't have 500 million users, they have 500 million products.

No episodic tv shows until they are already over and were ended properly by the writers. I'm not going to invest time or emotion into a show or cast of characters only to have it end badly. I'm just now watching Lost and I'm sure it is as entertaining for me now, sans commercials, as it was for everyone else watching it live (added benefit, cliff hangers take 5 seconds to resolve).

No prominent logos or paying more for clothes just because ABC Corp. made them instead of XYZ. No Nike where generic is basically the same. No NFL jerseys because paying $120 for a logo is ridiculously insulting. Celebs get paid to endorse products but the rest of us are supposed to pay for the privilege? Screw that.

And this is why good shows get cancelled. Only the ratings matter, but I can only hope they sell enough The Wire and Breaking Bad DVD box sets to make TV execs think twice about this.

I have DirecTV. It has a feature to show you the most-watched shows at any given time in several categories both regionally and nationally (hint: fox news is always #1 nationally). I'm willing to bet that data is being harvested in some fashion.

This is exactly what I was going to say. People like the quoted drive me insane. They are the reason Arrested Development was taken off of the air.

If a show looks interesting, WATCH IT. Ratings are what drive television. Believe it or not, the business is for profit and the only way shows can justify their existence is by being able to sell ads based on the number of people watching them.

This seems incongruous. I also refused to watch Lost until it was over. (not because it was episodic tv, but I was an Alias fan and I watched how clusterf*cked that got, so I wasn't ready to trust JJ Abrams.)

I asked friends who watched it after it was over if it was worth watching, and basically the universal response was, "If you haven't started, don't bother." Which is a lot different than the "omg Lost!" I'd heard for a couple years when it started.

See, I guess I never understood this aspect of watching shows after the fact. I always viewed the cliffhangers as an important part of the storytelling. There's something titillating about waiting a week or even an entire summer for the show to answer questions. I always thought the anticipation of what happens next is half the fun.

Advertisements. I don't listen to commercial radio, I don't watch commercial TV, I have an adblocker on my web browser. Almost without exception, I find ads to be insulting and condescending, or just outright stupid, and even the clever ones lose their shine quickly when you see the same 15 or 30 second spot over and over and over. If this boycott catches on, there will obviously have to be a major shift in the way things are funded, but I think I'd be okay with that.

  1. Television. Owning one or having one in the house. 12 years. My children don't know the difference and spend the majority of their time outside.

  2. Fast food. For me 12 years, my wife 5. Sounds very harsh but when my wife first fell pregnant I told her that if she ever took my kids to a McDonalds I would divorce her on the spot. I was only half joking.

  3. Drinking anything other that tap water, milk, coffee and beer. 6 months. Surprisingly the one thing that has made me feel the healthiest. I never really drank soda but I would easily down 2+ liters of fruit juice or "healthy" water a day. Cutting that out dropped a tonne of sugar from my diet. Took a while to get used to the flavor of Tokyo's tap water but I discovered half a lime in the jar did the trick.

  4. Chain stores and shopping malls. (as best I can) Basically since I moved to Japan because they are pretty easy to avoid with all the ma and pa competition still in the game. I'd rather pay a little more and get some honest service.
