Kitty!

The final sequence of Monsters Inc. always gets me. I tear up somewhat regularly when watching quality films but that scene had me in a blubbering mess.

Not cool when you're 13 and on a date.

Red: There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because I'm in here, or because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who committed that terrible crime. I want to talk to him. I want to try and talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone and this old man is all that's left. I got to live with that. Rehabilitated? It's just a bullshit word. So you go on and stamp your form, sonny, and stop wasting my time. Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.

I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head. I think it's the excitement only a free man can feel, a free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain. I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

I have to remind myself that some birds aren't meant to be caged. Their feathers are just too bright. And when they fly away, the part of you that knows it was a sin to lock them up DOES rejoice. But still, the place you live in is that much more drab and empty that they're gone. I guess I just miss my friend.

Jenny Curran: Were you scared in Vietnam? Forrest Gump: Yes. Well, I-I don't know. Sometimes it would stop raining long enough for the stars to come out... and then it was nice. It was like just before the sun goes to bed down on the bayou. There was always a million sparkles on the water... like that mountain lake. It was so clear, Jenny, it looked like there were two skies one on top of the other. And then in the desert, when the sun comes up, I couldn't tell where heaven stopped and the earth began. It's so beautiful. Jenny Curran: I wish I could've been there with you. Forrest Gump: You were.

totally, the other scene in Forrest Gump that kills me is when he's talking to Jenny's Grave: "[to Jenny's grave] You died on a Saturday morning and I had you placed here under our tree. And I had that house of your father's bulldozed to the ground. Momma always said dyin' was a part of life. I sure wish it wasn't. Little Forrest, he's doing just fine. About to start school again soon. I make his breakfast, lunch and dinner every day. I make sure he combs his hair and brushes his teeth every day. Teaching him how to play ping-pong. He's really good. We fish a lot. And every night, we read a book. He's so smart, Jenny. You'd be so proud of him. I am. He, uh, wrote a letter, and he says I can't read it. I'm not supposed to, so I'll just leave it here for you. Jenny, I don't know if Momma was right or if, if it's Lieutenant Dan. I don't know if we each have a destiny, or if we're all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze, but I, I think maybe it's both. Maybe both is happening at the same time. I miss you, Jenny. If there's anything you need, I won't be far away."

It's his delivery that does it, because he's been on such an even keel, so unflappable, all the way through the movie. You think that he skates through life because he doesn't understand, and then that scene shows that he understands just fine.

From American History X

Bob Sweeney: There was a moment, when I used to blame everything and everyone for all the pain and suffering and vile things that happened to me, that I saw happen to my people. Used to blame everybody. Blamed white people, blamed society, blamed God. I didn't get no answers 'cause I was asking the wrong questions. You have to ask the right questions.

Spoilerish Edit: What I really love about this line is that Andy is just referring to the idea that a childhood toy got him through tough times and was always there and that he genuinely loved Woody. But, Woody actually was the most loyal friend, willing to go through hell and back (three times) for Andy and always stressing that the toys are supposed to be unselfish and be there for Andy.

Yeah, that's a much more painful line.

"Is he smart or is he...?"

Because it is in this instant that we realize that for the whole movie (and forrest's entire life), while we thought that was unaware of how badly damaging his handicap was, he was actually living in shame and pain. We had assumed that the one upshot to his disability was that he'd been spared the perspective necessary to appreciate just how bad he had it. In that one line our assumptions are ripped away and we see the true horror of it all.

As much as it made me cry it was the absolute perfect thing to do at that point in the movie. I have never seen a movie before or since that had such a perfect death. It was impeccably timed and made it so nobody was safe from that point on. You always think, "Sure (side character) might die but (main characters) won't! Everyone I really love is safe!" His death gave the movie so much tension and made you really worry for everyone's well being.

Still... heartbreaking.

"Dear fellas, I can't believe how fast things move on the outside. I saw an automobile once when I was a kid, but now they're everywhere. The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry. The parole board got me into this halfway house called "The Brewer" and a job bagging groceries at the Foodway. It's hard work and I try to keep up, but my hands hurt most of the time. I don't think the store manager likes me very much. Sometimes after work, I go to the park and feed the birds. I keep thinking Jake might just show up and say hello, but he never does. I hope wherever he is, he's doin' okay and makin' new friends. I have trouble sleepin' at night. I have bad dreams like I'm falling. I wake up scared. Sometimes it takes me a while to remember where I am. Maybe I should get me a gun and rob the Foodway so they'd send me home. I could shoot the manager while I was at it, sort of like a bonus. I guess I'm too old for that sort of nonsense any more. I don't like it here. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay. I doubt they'll kick up any fuss. "I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time... For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars... And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined our street... Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper... And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird... And Janie... And Janie... And... Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... At this point in the movie (my daughters first in a theater at 2.5 y/o) she jumps up into my lap, looks me dead in the eye and says, "Promise dad?"

Yeah, I'm cutting onions at my desk. It may not translate here well but her expression and the intent on her face shouldn't have been coming from a two year old.

It seems strange that my life should end in such a terrible place, but for three years I had roses and apologized to no one. I shall die here. Every inch of me shall perish. Every inch, but one. An inch. It is small and it is fragile and it is the only thing in the world worth having. We must never lose it or give it away. We must NEVER let them take it from us. I hope that whoever you are, you escape this place. I hope that the worlds turns, and that things get better. But what I hope most of all is that you understand what I mean when I tell you that, even though I do not know you, and even though I may never meet you, laugh with you, cry with you, or kiss you, I love you. With all my heart, I love you. Valerie.

The monologue at the end of 25th Hour always gets me...

"We'll drive. Keep driving. Head out to the middle of nowhere, take that road as far as it takes us. You've never been west of Philly, have ya? This is a beautiful country, Monty, it's beautiful out there, like a different world. Mountains, hills, cows, farms, and white churches. I drove out west with your mother one time, before you was born. Brooklyn to the Pacific in three days. Just enough money for gas, sandwiches, and coffee, but we made it. Every man, woman, and child alive should see the desert one time before they die. Nothin' at all for miles around. Nothin' but sand and rocks and cactus and blue sky. Not a soul in sight. No sirens. No car alarms. Nobody honkin' atcha. No madmen cursin' or pissin' in the streets. You find the silence out there, you find the peace. You can find God. So we drive west, keep driving till we find a nice little town. These towns out in the desert, you know why they got there? People wanted to get way from somewhere else. The desert's for startin' over. Find a bar and I'll buy us drinks. I haven't had a drink in two years, but I'll have one with you, one last whisky with my boy. Take our time with it, taste the barley, let it linger. And then I'll go. I'll tell you don't ever write me, don't ever visit, I'll tell you I believe in God's kingdom and I'll see you and your mother again, but not in this lifetime. You'll get a job somewhere, a job that pays cash, a boss who doesn't ask questions, and you make a new life and you never come back. Monty, people like you, it's a gift, you'll make friends wherever you go. You're going to work hard, you're going to keep your head down and your mouth shut. You're going to make yourself a new home out there. You're a New Yorker, that won't ever change. You got New York in your bones. Spend the rest of your life out west but you're still a New Yorker. You'll miss your friends, you'll miss your dog, but you're strong. You got your mother's backbone in you, you're strong like she was. You find the right people, and you get yourself papers, a driver's license. You forget your old life, you can't come back, you can't call, you can't write. You never look back. You make a new life for yourself and you live it, you hear me? You live your live the way it should have been. But maybe, this is dangerous, but maybe after a few years you send word to Naturelle. You get yourself a new family and you raise them right, you hear me? Give them a good life, Monty. Give them what they need. You have a son, maybe you name him James, it's a good strong name, and maybe one day years from now years after I'm dead and gone reunited with your dear ma, you gather your whole family around and tell them the truth, who you are, where you come from, you tell them the whole story. Then you ask them if they know how lucky there are to be there. It all came so close to never happening. This life came so close to never happening. "

Maybe because I'm a teacher, but the end of Mr. Holland's Opus tears me up every time:

So it might be easy for him to think himself a failure. And he would be wrong, because I think that he’s achieved a success far beyond riches and fame. Look around you. There is not a life in this room that you have not touched, and each one of us is a better person because of you. We are your symphony, Mr. Holland. We are the melodies and the notes of your opus. And we are the music of your life.

Futurama did sadness pretty well. The Globetrotter/chronotons episode gets me too, after Fry sees his love letter written in the stars get imploded and bender whistles the globetrotter theme song as it goes to black. Also the the seven leaf clover episode with all the flashbacks of Yancy. Also the episode when Leela finds out her parents are mutants and it ends with the montage of them protecting her as she grows up. Dang, Futurama.

Edit: thinking back on these episodes, I think they were some of my favorites. I think the real test of the new episodes will be if they can still manage to move me like these ones did. I need to see that Futurama can still do sad.

I came here to post a Lord of the Rings quote, and was pleasantly surprised to find so many already.

Here is the one that makes me tear up every time:

Sam: I know. It's all wrong. By rights we shouldn't even be here. But we are. It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something.

Frodo: What are we holding onto, Sam?

Sam: That there's some good in this world, Mr. Frodo... and it's worth fighting for.

I shed a tear..

I have no idea to this day what those two Italian ladies were singing about. Truth is, I don't want to know. Some things are best left unsaid. I'd like to think they were singing about something so beautiful, it can't be expressed in words, and makes your heart ache because of it. I tell you, those voices soared higher and farther than anybody in a gray place dares to dream. It was like some beautiful bird flapped into our drab little cage and made those walls dissolve away, and for the briefest of moments, every last man in Shawshank felt free.

Pippin singing:

Through shadow to the edge of night,

Until the stars are all alight.

Mist and shadow, Cloud and shade

All shall fade,

all shall fade.

Okay, I'm already tearing up writing this. I don't know the exact line but it's in the narration to March of the f&cking Penguins:

"And sometimes, the male just isn't equipped enough to be a Father. And he loses his egg."

Okay I have to wash my face now.

Not a line, but at the end of Pay It Forward, when everyone shows up at the end with all the candles. I was BAWLING.

Also, Click. "Family...family comes first." and "I'm so sorry I barged in. I love you son." And the crying afterwards. I never expected a fucking Adam Sandler movie to make me cry so damned much.

Not a movie, but...

"Wow.. I'm still not ready to do this. It's gonna be so weird not having you by my side everyday. Making fun of the doctors. Going on and on about Jesus. Man, I hope he's real or you're gonna be pissed. Remember my first day? When a patient came in and started bleeding out on me? And I was so shocked I could barely move? But you stood by my side and guided me through it. And then you did the most amazing thing of all: you made me laugh. For the last fifteen years, you've been my role model, but most of all, you've been my friend. And I don't know what else to say except I'm really, really gonna miss you. Goodbye."

Fucking bawling as I write this.

President Marjorie Bota (TV broadcast): "According to the records at the NorthAm Robotics Company, the robot also known as Andrew Martin, was powered up at 5:15 pm on April 3rd, 2005. In a few hours, he'll be 200 years old, which means that with the exception of Methuselah and other biblical figures, Andrew is the oldest living human in recorded history. For it is by this proclamation, I validate his marriage to Portia Charney, and acknowledge his humanity."

(Andrew slowly closing his eyes for the finale time during the announcement.)

Portia: Andrew..

Nurse: I'm sorry he didn't see it.

Portia: Maybe he didn't need to. Would you do me a favor? Would you mind unplugging me? That's an order.

Portia: Thank you, Galatea.

Nurse: As the the great Andrew Martin used to say, "One is glad to be of service."

Portia: [looking to Andrew] See you soon.

~ Bicentennial Man

Not the greatest of all films, but the ending always turns on the waterworks for me. Saddest ending ever.

"There he goes, one of god's own creations, some kind of high powered mutant never meant for mass production, too weird to live, and too rare to die."

Lots of good ones in Gladiator.

I also like:

"I will see you again my friend, but not yet. Not yet."

"Come here with me, and sit by your father's side."

I left Pan's Labyrinth sobbing into my hat. Goddamn.

And: "I have reflected many times upon our rigid search. It has shown me that everything is illuminated in the light of the past. It is always along the side of us, on the inside, looking out. Like you say, inside out. Jonathan, in this way, I will always be along the side of your life. And you will always be along the side of mine."

A white line, painted on the sand and on the ocean, from me to you. :C
