15:19 in my apartment in Paris. The windows are wide open. A thunderstorm just passed over, and now the sun has returned. I feel a gentle breeze and hear the church bells of Sacre Coeur in the background. I'm not wearing pants.

My old roommate was doing a Master's in mathematical physics, and he'd taught himself Java to do simulations and all sorts of fun stuff. In his first meeting with his advisor, he was told "you'll need to learn a real programming language."

Yep. Fortran.

I don't know what language engineers are going to use in ten years, in fact I have no clue what it will look like, but one thing is sure: It will be called Fortran.

I work on ATLAS as a post doc in particle physics, I measure particles mostly but need to check results with predictions from theory software made in fortran. I'm employed by my university and am stationed at CERN ~50% of my time. If you can join a group at your uni active at CERN you have a good chance to go. CERN also directly employ people sometimes https://ert.cern.ch/browse_www/wd_pds?p_web_site_id=1 Best of luck :)

14:28. London, on a bus on my way to Hyde Park, where I will talk to groups of strangers about space and science at Speakers Corner.

[–]bigbadbass 32 points33 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

So you're one of those people that shouts at me? Can you explain what you do a bit more please?

[–]joezuntz 61 points62 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Sure. I'm an astrophysicist so I like to go down to talk about space and science and give a bit of a counterpoint to the many preachers that are there. I made a hand-written placard saying "Ask me about the Big Bang" and a few little signs to put on the fence.

People tend to come over pretty quickly, mainly because the sign is funny and photogenic and they want a picture. That helps build a small crowd fast.

Most people tend to be quiet, with conversations dominated by a couple of people. Because I'm not being very confrontational, unlike most of the speakers, the people who just want a yelling match tend to get bored and move on quickly. My format is to mainly just ask for questions but then use the answers to launch a short monologue about some area of interest, whether it's stellar life cycles of the contents of the universe or whatever.

The most common question most times is "what was before the Big Bang", which has some good answers and is nice because it quickly takes us to the edge of current research, which is good to demonstrate. Apart from that lots of people tend to ask philosophical or sometimes religious questions; I tend to try to answer those by quickly leading into something more scientific. Quite a few people ask questions about popular science topics like Schrodinger's Cat or Dark Matter - these are pretty fun to answer.

It was a great day today.

UK. Noon. Sunday. Sitting in a barn on the edge of the Yorkshire Moors, taking my third coffeebreak of the day.

My cat has caught a mole and is trying to figure out what to do with it. My cousin is practising gymnastics in the field outside the window, which is scaring the hell out of the sheep. The guys in the cowshed across the yard are in the middle of a noisy argument about nothing, as usual. I am sleepy and wondering whether to give up and take a nap or go in the house and bake some bread. Just a normal day.

Arizona, the sun is about to rise and I just came in from swimming a couple of laps in high 80s water. I've got my mobile office (laptop & wacom tablet) set up at my in-laws' for the weekend, on a long table in a dining room with a high vaulted ceiling. It looks like a viking hall in the dim light. I'm drinking cheap beer from a pewter stein and eating fig newtons before heading to bed after an all-nighter of creating wireframes for a SaaS startup client that's about to close their second round of funding. I'm about to climb into bed with my sleeping wife, who's about to have a baby any day. I'm happy as shit.

http://www.reddit.com/r/meanwhileonsunday/

EDIT i'd like to clear up something for anyone who might go through my history and be turned off by the derision in some (most) of my comments.

i'm not against "community". i like the idea. it's what makes the cities, and countries, and continents, work. pretty much everything, on a micro scale, reflects community.

i just don't like the way reddit does community, with the reposts and the bestofs and the we'-re-cooler-than-digg bacon narwhal lawl.

but this idea? this idea that gripper had, this is something. he might/might not have been thinking along these lines when he created the post, but it has traction, and potential.

this is more "community" than any of the above mentioned.

EDIT 2 this. this is what i was talking about. this does not make you a community, it just makes the lot of you look like a bunch of fucking assholes.

UPDATE in the spirit, it's 0400 in Mumbai, and i'm heading to bed.

8AM, Chicago. Hung over. Beer and brats ftw.

My bed was strangely wet when I woke up, but doesn't smell like piss, so that's confusing me. Empty beer glass in front of me (hair of the dog ftw), and a room that looks like hell around me. It's a pretty modern, bland college dorm room that I move out of in the next week. Clothes are strewn across the floor next to my bed and a bright yellow duck with a pink bow lies atop them. The bed itself is showing mattress because my bottom sheet keeps coming off. My roommate is silently passed out and won't notice when I go out for this cigarette, which I am hesitant to do because my hair looks like hell.

To my left is a wall, upon which, among other things, is a photo booth picture of my grandfather. He has the same, blank expression in every frame. I found it in his house after he passed away and I intend to keep it for a long, long time.

It's a rainy, unseasonably cold day in Ithaca, NY. There's a festival going on, but I assume no one is there, so I've decided to purchase a good burger from the local coffee shop.
