People really use the term "troll" liberally; I've noticed there's three major varieties:
Someone who pranks people.
Someone who lures people into arguing.
Someone who is antagonistic.
Any combination of these.
The issue I have with this vagueness is that #3 often includes very sociopathic behavior. Some of the shit I've seen people do in the name of "trolling" or "lulz" (like calling and mocking the parents of some kid who just killed himself) is not "trolling", it's extremely fucked up.

This is one thing that bugs me. The original term meant fishing, as in "trolling for salmon".
The fact that these people are oftentimes seen to exhibit garish, bridge-dwelling-troll-like behavior is just a coincidence.

Actually, I don't mind the "obvious question" trolls, and answer them honestly even if I think they are trolling. I figure if they aren't seriously asking the question, someone else might have eventually, so giving a decent answer can't really hurt. I consider that to be trolling, and yes, it's unconditional support disguised as rational posting, which is, however, baseless and based on fallacies, as required to always like and support Microsoft products by ignoring all of their huge gaping downsides the size of Mordor. This is essentially what a good troll, a smart fanboy or a paid poster would do.

There are far more reasons than I have the time and energy to tell, especially to a Microsoft troll, but I'll mention just a few at random: shameful waste of system resources, stupid-oriented GUI where all the cool stuff is deeply hidden and gets deeper with each release, lack of useful features, totally lame bundled software (no minimally decent coreutils? No development toolchains? No NFS? No rsync? No sshd? Not even grep or sed!? WTF is this toy?), Digital Restrictions Malware which you cannot control or bypass in your very own machine, pitiful filesystem support (not even bundled ext3), terrible for automation, overly complicated configuration, policies and security, flawed security system, impractical filesystem security, kinda stupid TCP/IP stack, requires rebooting far more often than it should, obnoxious user babysitting, useless shit that wastes system resources such as animations or transparency, terrible command windows, outrageously insecure and shitty web browser that does little short of sending "Pragma: rape-me-lol" with grave security design flaws such as ActiveX (very Microsoft-like, of course), shitty and stupid system API (PleaseCanYouReallyBeMoreStupidEx(NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL)), geek-hostile, terrible environment for programmers, remarkedly slower for servers, scales poorly both downwards (tiny machines with tiny memory settings) and upwards (which is what I'd expect from a toy).

It's my computer with my software with my data. I cannot accept corporations to rule and decide over what I have. I cannot accept filesystem hooks, constatn checks for mafia protected/infected data, background processes or kernel modules I cannot disable or even see, and so on. It's also a huge, gaping security hole. I'd rather trust Pete the Pirate than a corporation like Microsoft or its gang to have any control over what does my system do. A system which acts on behalf of the mafiaa as decided by Microsoft, that may call home anytime, that may hook anything, and whose behaviour may change any day without me knowing with an infected upgrade, is a system I cannot use. It also comes with performance penalties, though I know performance is the n-th priority for Microsoft in Vista; Vista is expected to be horridly slow and wasteful (maybe because that's how Microsoft gets favoured treatment from hardware makers).
If I decided to buy an operating system (which would be kinda stupid as there are much better ones which are free software and distributed free of charge), I want the software developer to work for me, not to work for the mafiaa, but Microsoft insists on licking the mafiaa's assholes and work for the best of their interests instead those of their customers. As well as those of hardware vendors, and pretty much anyone else. The customer is always the last priority. How nice.

I think trolls are revelant and essential part of any online community. They are the safety valves that release the pressure of heavy arguments and sometimes even act as teh canary in the mineshaft, warning the rest of us of a thread becoming too serious or pretentious.
But at the same time; if you applaud the trolls too much, we lose any ability to be even a little serious; and the community is lost completely. I suppose some people don't care, but reddit has a wonderful community, it's one of the reasons I frequent here so often.

I'm not entirely sure IAmInLoveWithJesus is a troll, by my definition. She actually seems to truly believe what she posts, and is fairly dedicated to it. The problem with glorifying trolls is that to any new person interested in joining Reddit, it appears that bad behavior and being a nuisance is not only allowed, but encouraged. Having one or two 'famous' trolls is one thing, but when it becomes accepted behavior for people to troll, we are only harming the reddit community.
I understand trolling can be funny, and amusing, but you also have to realize that it is comedy at the expense of other people; which is just assholish, and only increasing reddit's chantropy.
