A meteor just missed earth. If it was going to hit, would they have bothered telling us? (self.AskReddit)

I'd like to know. I'd go camp out on a hill or mountain with a few people. Take a box of drugs and nice food, have a barbecue and a drink, get some music up there and wait.
I would prefer being able to come to terms with an impending death rather than shitting my pants as a meteorite bursts through the atmosphere, thundering across the sky and impacting beyond the horizon only to kick up a wall of pressure, dust and fire miles high powering towards me.

If there was only 24-48 hours notice and it would have been a catastrophically damaging hit, why panic everyone on the planet?
[–]32bites 2 points3 points4 points 3 years ago*
why panic everyone on the planet?
Who says there will be panic? Have a huge orgy. We're all going to die. No need to worry about STDs or anything, just have fun.

Why can't life be like this now? We're all going to die, regardless.

No need to worry about STDs or anything

I love this idea but I'm sure things like rape are very likely to happen.

No.

If ther ewas nothing we could do to avert Species-Level Anihilation, then no. Don't tell me. Ever. Let me live in blissful ignorance until it soars above the sky in a burning cloud of gasses. My last thoughts will be one of awe and dawning comprehension.
To tell me I'm going to die and everything else I care for is going to go the same way and tehre is nothing anyone can do about it.. .
That's just cruel.
[–]markitymark 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago
That's not cruel, that's life
It's already this way man, you've only got another 60 years or so, and a lot of your loved ones will be gone well before that. Live it up now, you may not be able to tomorrow.
[–]Sylveran-01 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago
No, it's not that.
I'm aware my Loved Ones will be gone as the years go by and that my own life can be snuffed in a minute or so.
But I draw comfort in thinking that life goes on (Now think of that sentence in Morgan Freeman's voice!) and that civilization would continue to exist in one form or another. So even if I'm gone, even if everyone I know is gone, then at least there'll be someone around to remember us or to even mourn us.
An asteroid wiping out all civilization and extinguishing life all around would mean our entire species, all our discoveries, all our art and poetry and science and beliefs, all of that amounted to nothing. And that is horribly depressing. I don't want to lieve even for a day thinking of that.

I rather die quick rather than living in that crescendo type of human hell that will become of Earth between the time of the announcement that a meteorite is about to strike Earth and the actual strike. For the case of an upcoming Armageddon, yes, ignorance is bliss.

I just checked spaceweather.com and, wow, you weren't kidding! 35 meters large and the closest it came was 0.2 times the distance from here to the moon!
[–]bertolotti 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago
that's actually a great idea

Im just sad it missed our sorry asses. the universe would have done itself a favor wiping us out before we learn how to pollute and fight over the galaxy.
[–]farox 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago*
The universe doesn't care about us. Just like this whole "Saving the earth" thing this is bogus.
The earth is just fine, with or without us. When we really make it uninhabitable for ourselfs it will recover in no time and we're just a footnote in earths history.
[–]oldcrow[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 years ago
And any whale we save will just be cooked when the sun goes red-giant.
The only creatures on Earth that matter are the ones that will build space ships and take all the other creature's DNA with them.
