One day trip (self.Albany)
submitted 6 months ago by platypusperry
I am going to be in Albany for one day and one night next month for an interview. Any suggestions as to where to eat or what museum to go to? My budget is limited.

Capital-q smoke house. Its a hole in the wall but its got some good eats.

Not to mention, Shaun (the owner) is an incredibly nice guy.

The NY State museum is free, as for food I guess it depends on your tastes. There's a lot of good Italian and Indian food but also everything in between.

I'm not picky when it comes to food. Name some of the Italian restaurants.

Cardonas market on Delaware ave, kind of pricey but you'll get enough to be full for 8 bucks, they close at 7 though. There's a ton of pizza places, I prefer Paesans, they have a few locations around the area. If you want Chinese/Japanese there's Asian Place (corny, I know) on Madison, they have a sushi bar and the best General Tso's I've had in awhile.
Edit: If you're at the BW near SUNY then I'd suggest dragon city for Chinese or the Dibellas for a decent sammich.

I'll keep Dibellas on my to do list and I'll try to go to Cardonas if I can get there before it closes. Thanks!

I wish I was there for more than one day now, everything sounds delicious.

Yeah he's right about Dibellas, but that'll be within walking distance for you and it beats the hell out of Subway. With your location you'll have to take a drive to get the good stuff.

Right near the muesum is Hill st cafe, they have some good pizza.

If you know the hotel you are staying at I can recommend stuff in walking distance. While we do have a good bus system (cdta.org) walking is easier. What type of food do you like? Or you really into beer? State museum is free (and the only museum I know of).
I'm staying at the best western. I do enjoy beer. I am not picky when it comes to food. I love all types of ethnic food and I love trying new things.
near the airport on wolf road? or on western ave near suny albany? The pump station is a nice place with beer.
[–]platypusperry[S] 2 points3 points4 points 6 months ago
It's on western ave. I'll be sure to check out the pump station then. Thanks.

Are you comfortable sharing who the interview is with? I just started 6 mo ago with a local company. Good luck either way.
Yeah, I don't mind. It's for school actually. I have an interview with Albany college of pharmacy.
[–]mikelieman -1 points0 points1 point 6 months ago
Western Ave. Best Western? You're 3 doors down from Sutter's Mill, which is a pretty darn good bar and grill. The food is seriously good.
It's good but for the price you can definitely do better. That place always struck me as being expensive for pub grub.
It seems like someone downvotes literally every post you make in this subreddit. Any idea who/why?
[–]blueboybob 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
probably someone who follows me from /r/cfb

i live a block away from cardona's, its a very sweet deli! another place for good inexpensive food is café 217 (corner of delaware and jefferson). they keep odd hours, but it is SO worth it!
we only have one museum in town, so hit it up! you mentioned liking beer, try the lionheart or mahar's. they're both great beer bars. good luck with the interview, judging by yr name, is it for a position at O.W.C.A.?
Haha thanks for the suggestions. I wish it was for owca, but my interview is for Albany college of pharmacy.
[–]mickeythesquid 1 point2 points3 points 6 months ago
Nice! I have several friends at ACP. Youll spend a lot of time at lionheart if you get in. And another bonus, ACP has albany's (aka Elk Bellow,NY) only Tim Hortons!
[–]thingamabobs 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
SUNY has a Tim Horton's in their Campus Center
[–]mickeythesquid 0 points1 point2 points 6 months ago
I didnt get the memo, eh.... :-\
Just an FYI :). It opened last year.
Well I'll keep all this mind if I do get in. Thanks again!
You all have been really helpful :)

Best restaurant in the area, hands down, is New World Bistro. It's not extremely wallet friendly, but it could be worse.

Just about all of these places will prepare you some great food for $10 or less:
Mexican: Bros Tacos on Ontario: delicious, cheap, sketchy college-ghetto neighborhood.
BBQ: Capital Q is right across the street from Bros. Get anything, make it a combo.
Italian: You can pretty much pick up a rock and hit a good restaurant with a light toss. The best ones seem to be along New Scotland or Delaware. If you want a great deli sandwich, Andy's on Delaware closes at 7pm, and one of their subs is basically two meals.
Chinese: A Dragon on Madison. If your budget is tight and you need valuable beer money, for like $4 or 5 you can order a student special, which is a small but filling portion of any given combo.
Beer: Mahar's at the corner of Western & Madison has literally hundreds of different beers. Only beer though, no wine or liquor. And it closes at midnight. And the seats fill up quickly. If the bar scene isn't your thing, almost all of their beers can be found at Oliver's on Colvin near Central
Pizza: Soho on Lark. Open til 4am. Paesan's and I Love NY Pizza never really impressed me, but Soho is always good.
Wings: Elbo Room on Delaware, or if you prefer something a little more addicting, Wings Over Albany's breading is half flour half MSG.
