The idea that catching a cold is somehow tied to this activity is misleading. In order to catch a cold one has to come in contact with a novel virus that the body cannot fend off and therefore it replicates.
It may be that Bacon's immune system was compromised over time as a result of being chilled, but the virus must still be present in order to overwhelm the body.
